Because I think it's a fine idea to have him spend the rest of his life in jail at great cost, or released onto benefits for the rest of his life, again at great cost. As opposed to earning money and paying taxes. Unless you're all advocating the return of hanging, of course. I'm not defending Hughes for doing what he did, and hate him with all your might, but people say 'no second chance' without ever offering a proper alternative.
