Wellens forced to ease off in training

Leicester City midfielder Richie Wellens has revealed he is having to be man-managed in training to ensure he is 100-per-cent fit on match days.

The 31-year-old, who captained City on Saturday against Peterborough United, said he was coming to the stage of his career where he is unable to go flat-out on the training ground.

Defender Paul Konchesky's training is also being managed by City boss Nigel Pearson, and Wellens said he is feeling the benefits of easing off compared to the situation at the start of the campaign.

"I can't train 100-per-cent every day because I was doing that at the start of the season and, by the time the game came, I was tired," said Wellens.

"The manager understands now that it is all about the games and I can't train 100-per-cent every day. On Thursdays and Fridays I ease off a bit for Saturday.

"The manager has given me and Paul Konchesky the last couple of Mondays, and we come back in on Tuesday and I feel great later in the week.

"It is difficult for any player to accept that he is coming to a stage in his career when he can't train flat out all the time.

"If he chooses to do that and I feel better then great.

"I have to keep chatting with the manager to tell him how I am feeling," said Wellens, who admits he is terrified at the thought of retirement from playing.

The Moston-born Mancunian has been a professional footballer since leaving school and admits he is unsure what to do when he retires, but wants to remain in the game in some capacity.

"I haven't really thought about what to do because it scares me to be honest," he said.

"Since I was nine years old a professional footballer is all I have ever wanted to be.

"I was a professional footballer at 16. It kind of scares me because I haven't done anything else, but I suppose there has to be a time when I have to do something else.

"In coaching, I am a believer it is about who you know really. Hopefully, one of my mates can give me a job.

"When I finish I will have been in the game 20 years or so and I don't want to go out of it.

"I want to put something back in, especially because I watch my sons playing and I like seeing the enjoyment they get, the innocence and the honesty they have when they play.

"Maybe I would like to coach kids or at professional level. Hopefully, that is four or five years down the line, but now I want to get into the Premier League with this club."

Never heard of anything like that before, but is Nigel's training harder for the older players? He mentions Konchesky as well...

I've heard of it, makes sense tbh, Konchesky has been playing well for us so far this season so we don't want to tire him out

I've got a better idea.

We should give Wellens the weekends off.......

He'll have more energy to train during the week........ ;)

Its just basic man management, quite common really.

Well done to Nigel for doing this, I cant imagine Sven would have done that.

Any chance Nige could suggest that Beckford is homesick and give him leave to return to scouseland?

About three and a half years should do it.....

Seems to be doing Konch a world of good!

Richie not so much........

I agree, Konch looked tired at the start of the season, he's got stronger and stronger recently.

Wellens' such a media whore!

Some of the stuff in here is embarrassing. lol

Marbella Dave made me laugh though.

I actually agree with him though ultimately, I think a break from the team is what is needed. I still think he's got a part to play, but when you've got as many midfielders as us and one isn't performing (or arguably two) then you've got to give them a rest. Would like to see Danns or Fernandes given a go there Saturday instead of him, be interesting to actually see Danns where he wants to be.

And Konchesky then.

Koncheskey does a hell of a lot more running and does it for the full 90 giving him Monday's off is not a problem Wellens looks ****ed after 20 mins even with this help

This may well be because his waistline seems to be growing as big as his ego.

I could actually understand this if Wellens or Konchesky were 35 or 36 as quite a few clubs let their older players ease down a bit (thinking back Tony Cottee only did 2 sessions a week under MON). These guys are barely in their 30s though and are supposed to be at the peak of their physical fitness. Surely afew hours of running around and kicking a ball can't knacker you that much?

And also if our "midfield general" is easing down on training, maybe we can factor that into his next contract and drop 10% off his wages? Not being funny but if you're one of the first names on the sheet, you need to be there for every session. I'm pretty sure there's a cheaper 'general' out there who can still put a full shift in.

The worrying implication in this article is that his legs are gone.

That is particularly problematic when he is one of a two man central midfield in the Championship where fitness is everything.

I have always been disappointed with how reluctant Wellens is to track opposition players making runs into our danger area.

Can we do the same for King, the only difference is substitute train for tackling

There are too many posters in this thread who are being too soft.

Wellens is one half of the most important pairing on the pitch in terms of getting the team going. He was captain in the last game.

And yet his training is being watered down because he can't cope with 90 minutes of physically demanding football but after Saturday's performance he couldn't even last beyond 60. Konchesky on the other hand could have carried on motoring up and down the left until the early hours of Sunday morning.

He's only 31. The Championship is hardly comparable to the Premiership in terms of the pace of the game either, where he wants to take us of course. I find it extremely worrying that this is being highlighted now, after a series of below par performances - but yes it's ok, because Konch is on a lighter training load as well...

We need a Neil Lennon in the middle of the park - I'm fed up with below par CM's. We've all forgotten how good they can be since it's so long since we had one.
