Darkon84 Posted 11 January 2012 Posted 11 January 2012 Yep, yet another twitter furore. Szczesny has been forced to apologise over comments on his Twitter account that have been deemed to be racist...... Not really, it was a comment about rape. Read below... http://news.bbc.co.u...ll/16498907.stm Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has apologised for saying in a Twitter message that team-mate Aaron Ramsey looked "like a rapist". The 21-year-old Polish goalkeeper has been reminded by the club of his responsibilities, and apologised for any offence his remarks had caused. The statements mocking Wales captain Ramsey have since been deleted from Szczesny's Twitter timeline. "I'm sorry if anyone was offended by my tweets," Szczesny wrote on Twitter. "There are some things we should not joke about and I have crossed the line. Sorry!" Poland international Szczesny joined the Gunners in 2006 from Polish side Legia Warsaw and has since made 35 appearances for the club - including their 1-0 FA Cup victory over Leeds United on Tuesday. Ramsey, also 21, had posted a picture of himself attending a golf event, to which Szczesny responded: "I don't wanna be rude mate but you look like a rapist on that picture." The Wales international had treated the comments as light-hearted, replying: "I try my best mate we're not all blessed with a good fashion sense like you". Wonder if this will get as much attention as racist tweets etc. Hmmmm, doubt it.
Ross 'LCFC' Turner Posted 11 January 2012 Posted 11 January 2012 The world is going crazy if you have to apologise for what you write on your own personal account, if you dont like it dont follow.
Guest MattP Posted 11 January 2012 Posted 11 January 2012 This is actually getting laughable. Foriegn guys comes in, cracks a joke that is fairly common in an English changing room. Has to apologise. We'll all be walking around with Crash Helmets and Armbands on in ten years.

Ross 'LCFC' Turner Posted 11 January 2012 Posted 11 January 2012 When i play football ive got the touch of a rapist. Sorry.
RobHawk Posted 11 January 2012 Posted 11 January 2012 I think its sad that he has had to apologise because he caused offence! i mean really to who? I understand Arsenal reminding him of his responsibilities as these players are role models to lots of young kids! Im sure most of them have heard worse but it doesn't look very professional as a club! The worst thing about it for me is that Ramsey probably did look like a rapist!
Petchy Posted 11 January 2012 Posted 11 January 2012 Miguel Torres got sacked from the UFC for saying a similar thing on Twitter. He visited and donated money to various Rape support centres just to get his job back, although he says he made the decision to do all that charitable work himself.
StanSP Posted 11 January 2012 Posted 11 January 2012 Only just realised now why my comment got deleted. Ha. This is all so stupid though. Let players say what they want. They're no different to the public who tweet similar things, 'banter' or not, yet they still 'get away' with it. Mountains out of molehills.

Wasn't it because he quoted something from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia?
DB11 Posted 11 January 2012 Posted 11 January 2012 When i play football ive got the touch of a rapist. I know referees who have sent off for that "He's got the touch of a rapist"
The Doctor Posted 11 January 2012 Posted 11 January 2012 If people want to be offended by anything, how about szczesny's inability to spell paedophile, good spelling costs nothing. edit: spelt szcezesny's name wrong.
Leicester Lass Posted 11 January 2012 Posted 11 January 2012 Story along a similar line, not really worthy of a new thread. A footballer who posted a homophobic remark on a social media website has been sacked by his club. Oxford City striker Lee Steele made a comment on Twitter about the gay former Wales rugby player Gareth Thomas. Tweeting about Thomas's appearance on Celebrity Big Brother, Steele, 38, wrote a "strongly-worded" message about being in a bed near the contestant. Oxford City manager Mike Ford said: "On this occasion Lee's had to pay for his error of judgement." Mr Ford said calling the player to tell him he was sacked had been the toughest thing he had ever done in football but he felt that the Southern-Premier League club had made the right decision. He added: "He's made a homophobic comment, that doesn't necessarily mean he's homophobic." The former England rugby union international Ben Cohen has set up a foundation to combat homophobia and bullying. Speaking to BBC Oxford earlier this week, he said: "If you are a sportsman you're a role model and people look up to you no matter what division you're in." But he stopped short of calling for Mr Steele to be sacked, saying it should have been a lesson learnt. Mr Steele has declined to make any comment since the tweet was published. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-oxfordshire-16511735

The Doctor Posted 11 January 2012 Posted 11 January 2012 I'm offended that you can't spell his name right. Can I Anglicise it to Steve?
Captain... Posted 11 January 2012 Posted 11 January 2012 Story along a similar line, not really worthy of a new thread. http://www.bbc.co.uk...dshire-16511735 Very different though in Ramsey one it was a tasteless joke at a team mate, this one is actually homophobic and not meant in jest, "I wouldn’t fancy the bed next to Gareth Thomas. #padlock my a**e" that is offensive and he deserves to be sacked. This is all so stupid though. Let players say what they want. They're no different to the public who tweet similar things, 'banter' or not, yet they still 'get away' with it. Mountains out of molehills. What you say in private is different, would you say make that sort of a comment in front of your boss, or your grandparents, when you write something on Twitter it is public. To young lads that kind of talk is just having a laugh, but to others that is a very sensitive subject, If I was a rapist, I would not like being compared to Aaron Ramsey (a welsh former tree shagger). (I nearly made a much worse joke there, but because this is a public forum, I keep the sicker side of my sense of humour in check)

I only meant it was similar along the lines of it being posted on Twitter, not in terms of the response of a lot of people to the Szczesny post about it being a ridiculous reaction. Completely agree with the point you made, and didn't actually know what the tweet had said until you posted it.
Super_horns Posted 11 January 2012 Posted 11 January 2012 Didn't Iain Dowie say something like this on MOTD about Essian once? Twitter does seem to be causing a few issues but I guess that is the risk of using social websites.
iBleedLeicesterColours Posted 11 January 2012 Posted 11 January 2012 The world is getting unbelievably petty. Ridic.
Finnegan Posted 11 January 2012 Posted 11 January 2012 Love to see the Steele boy say that to Alfie's face.
