Test Cricket 2012

Completely agree with this; especially given the fact that 3 of the current top 6 batsman in Compton, Root and Bairstow are all relatively inexperienced at International level. I don't see why we'd sway from the 6 batsman/4 bowlers formation that has seen us compile so much success in recent years.

But that is kind of the point, Root looks good, I've got no faith in Compton or Bairstow at the moment, when KP is back promote Root to opener with Cook, then Bresnan in at 7. Swann and Broad are in the top 10 test all rounders, and Bresnan was in there too when he was in the side, Prior is the best Wicket Keeper batsman in the world.

Personally I just love having a 5 man attack, 3 of them capable of scoring big runs would love to see it.

Bresnan, Broad and Swann haven't made runs consistently enough to warrant being promoted up the order. I agree with your opinion on Bairstow, he's looked completely out of his depth; although considering the runs Compton made in New Zealand I feel he should be given more time to adapt to the test arena.

Root looks comfortable batting in the middle order; if it isn't broke, don't fix it.

Compton fails again, but not the only one.

Does anyone else wonder why Bell tends to come out play a few nice shots get a few boundaries in the first few overs he faces, then disappears into his shell for the next 10 overs. Seems to do it every time.

Still well on top, Prior should take us to around 400 and then we are set fair for our bowlers to dominate.

Although New Zealand have been far better than I thought they would.

However, Wagner was born in Pretoria? Why isn't he playing for England?

Brilliant day at Headingley yesterday, got a serious beer snake going. Crowd went mad when Root got to 100.

Don't want to dwell on the negatives but there's got to be serious questions about Compton.

we dont enforce the follow on and compton and trott have played like they're trying to save the test match...its all a bit weird.

Shouldn't matter though, as long as the weather stays fine.

Christ almighty trott and compton are boring to watch. I know its a test match but can you play quicker than a run an over against a part time spinner. Even there number 11 was hitting swanny for six. GET A MOVE ON!!!

I don't understand it. It's hard, and somewhat unfair, to complain when you are so dominant but we need to be ruthless. If you are going to bat again, bat quickly and put real pressure on them. Don't trundle along at less than 2 an over. And their best bowler is injured currently.

I felt for Cook, because Compton and Trott were grinding for no reason (maybe Compton is lacking confidence) and I think he was trying to get on with it, but he should've either enforced the follow-on or told his partners to bat at a quicker pace. The last hour was seriously dull.

Persist with Bairstow. Incredible natural talent.

Do fear for Compton. Don't think he will make it.

Hes been dreadful hasnt he? And hes a 'ranger' aa tgey say here.

First hour is crucial here, need wickets fast.

Changed your tune a bit, jury is still out on JB for me, he is talented, but I would prefer Morgan personally, especially if we stick with Compton, Compton, Root and Bairstow is pretty inexperienced for the Ashes, if we promote Root to opener and bring in KP then maybe we could get away with another inexperienced batsman, but if Trott could open I would go Cook, Trott, Bell, KP, Root, Morgan*

*Unless Morgan fails in county cricket between now and the Ashes.

Morgan isn't coming anywhere near the squad while he intends to play IPL full seasons, that's his choice. You either want to play for England or you don't.

I've never waverred on JB's talent, he was awful in New Zealand though, no other way to describe him, young players do struggle away though early on in general.

How pissed was I when I posted that as well?

Eventually.

I suppose, unfortunately, the result will mean that our philosophy won't change and we'll still try and bat on when there's a great chance to be ruthless.

Maybe, think it will be different in the Ashes though.

When you see Swann bowl like that you wonder if it might be worth giving a few overs when the ball is dead round the wicket to our bowlers to create some proper rough for him to bowl at the right handers.

If it is the same situation as that, the last test in the Ashes series and a win or a draw means we win the series, a defeat means we will draw the series, I hope we bat them into the ground to guarantee we don't lose

sad if that is the case for Morgan, other countries work around the IPL and benefit for it, I don't see why we can't Morgan would have been perfect to come out and smash it around and score some quick runs when we needed it on Sunday evening.

You think, I don't think any country has benefitted from the IPL? It's destroyed the Indian, Sri Lankan and West Indian and Test sides. Australia have got loads of batsman in it that can't occupy a crease for any period.

South Africa is hasn't affected but Dale Steyn hsn't been as good for months when he comes back, Us, New Zealand, Pakistan have all shown improvement from last year and we are the ones who don't allow it.

I think we have it spot on. You either fully commit or not, these are very well paid on the central contracts now, it would be awful to pick Morgan on the back of an IPL comp while shunning a guy scoring consistent runs in the County Championship.

He only averages 30 anyway and that's nowhere near good enough to get into this England side now and you can't pick a guy on the off chance you might need someone to smack it around a bit.

Same.
