Captain... Posted 29 May 2013 Posted 29 May 2013 You think, I don't think any country has benefitted from the IPL? It's destroyed the Indian, Sri Lankan and West Indian and Test sides. Australia have got loads of batsman in it that can't occupy a crease for any period. South Africa is hasn't affected but Dale Steyn hsn't been as good for months when he comes back, Us, New Zealand, Pakistan have all shown improvement from last year and we are the ones who don't allow it. I think we have it spot on. You either fully commit or not, these are very well paid on the central contracts now, it would be awful to pick Morgan on the back of an IPL comp while shunning a guy scoring consistent runs in the County Championship. He only averages 30 anyway and that's nowhere near good enough to get into this England side now and you can't pick a guy on the off chance you might need someone to smack it around a bit. I think it has perversely helped bowlers more than batsmen, knowing that if they stray slightly they are going to get smacked, and develop variations. It probably has contributed to the fairly poor test sides, but it obviously helps the 20/20 and one day sides. It will be interesting to see what happens with KP and if he will want to play in the IPL. As for Morgan, I would still prefer him to Bairstow, but I think JB does have a future for England.
Guest MattP Posted 29 May 2013 Posted 29 May 2013 Certainly helped in developing variations yeah. I'm not sure either deserve a spot for the ashes. Cook Compton Trott KP Bell Root Prior That has to be the top seven for the first test. Can't drop Compton after two bad games.
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 29 May 2013 Posted 29 May 2013 I don't think you will need to worry about the ashes, your batsmen wont need to make too many runs as our batting line up is very very weak apart from Clarkey

Cook Compton Trott KP Bell Root Prior That has to be the top seven for the first test. Can't drop Compton after two bad games. It's not just 2 bad games though, in 17 test innings he has failed to reach double figures 7 times and less than 20 9 times, and in his only home tests he looked worryingly out of depth, and there seem to be some serious technique flaws that have been exposed, I think that is a greater concern Australia will be licking their lips at the thought. I actually expect us to line up as you have said, I just think that Compton will be exposed.

Guest MattP Posted 29 May 2013 Posted 29 May 2013 Jesus If we don't at least take this 3-0 I'll be upset. That top 4 has 35-3 written all over it.
Guest MattP Posted 29 May 2013 Posted 29 May 2013 Nathan Lyon... Andy Flower basically admitted on the verdict last night we'll be playing all five on turning pitches. Imagine saying that ten years ago.
Bobby Hundreds Posted 29 May 2013 Posted 29 May 2013 Nathan Lyon makes The King of Spain look like Murali. Still, could've been worse, could've been Xavier Doherty.

Corky Posted 29 May 2013 Posted 29 May 2013 Jesus If we don't at least take this 3-0 I'll be upset. That top 4 has 35-3 written all over it. We should play Saj Mahmood as a joke.
Guest MattP Posted 29 May 2013 Posted 29 May 2013 We should play Saj Mahmood as a joke. That 05 series away, what was the attack? Mahmood, Harmison, Hoggard and Panesar with Read keeping? No wonder we got absolutely battered.
marko Posted 29 May 2013 Posted 29 May 2013 That 05 series away, what was the attack? Mahmood, Harmison, Hoggard and Panesar with Read keeping? No wonder we got absolutely battered. The only one missing in that line-up to make it a full-house is Liam Plunkett! Now he was bad!
marko Posted 1 June 2013 Posted 1 June 2013 Brings a whole new meaning to 'desperate times call for desperate measures'. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/cricket/international/theashes/10088354/The-Ashes-2013-Australia-look-to-fast-track-Pakistani-refugee-Fawad-Ahmed-into-squad.html
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 1 June 2013 Posted 1 June 2013 No different than having Trott, KP etc in ya side. Is a very good bowler at first class level as compared to Lyon he can actually turn the ball. Only issue is that test cricket and especially Ashes test cricket is a big step up.
Aus Fox Posted 1 June 2013 Posted 1 June 2013 No different than having Trott, KP etc in ya side. Is a very good bowler at first class level as compared to Lyon he can actually turn the ball. Only issue is that test cricket and especially Ashes test cricket is a big step up. Very different actually as Trott, KP etc all have English parents, this is no different to you having a son born in India and wanting him to play for Australia. The situation with Ahmed is different, where rules are being bent to ensure a player has citizenship in time to play a test. One situation is being aware of who is eligible to play for your country and picking the best 11, the other is desperate and coming very close to cheating.
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 2 June 2013 Posted 2 June 2013 If his wearing the Baggy Green he is Australian and actually spent a few years playing here. He is actually a really quiet down to earth bloke and it's not him pushing for his citizenship to be processed quicker it's the poor situation we are in with our spinners that is pushing it.

Havent seen much of either but watson just looks a more accomplished batter in t20 and odis plus offers the bowling option?
