Not really (Personally), however like I say to compete you need to take the risks because if you say no to such demands the play will end up going to another rival club and realistically you won't be able to compete.

So the only thing that will stop players demanding such wages is by either a) All clubs agree to put a cap on wages (If you just left it down to the clubs though it'll never happen) or b) The FA/FL putting a cap on wages.

I think football really is behind the times with 2 major things - Technology (Although it looks like football is slowly coming round to using it) and Wage Caps (I understand they are used in Rugby).

It simply won't work. Clubs will easily find ways to improve the financial terms of contracts outside of any wage cap.

Sadly the only way clubs will learn will be to see them go out of business ala Rangers due to their unsustainable levels of debt.

Yes but will he?. Lets say it was you playing for pompey.

Well if he doesn't and they go into liquidation he wont get anything, £5k / week is better than nothing. Perhaps if he agreed to take £5k/week for the duration of his contract but was allowed to leave and join another club with concurrent contracts where he might £20k/week the buyer would accept that.

its not just his wages crippling the club, its his image rights also

Playing in the 3rd tier and being the catalyst to plunge them into liquidation wont do his image rights a lot of good.

He'd get another club if they went into liquidation, what is to worry about for him? Fuck the fans.

If he can get another club so easily then perhaps he should do so now. And if he can't find a club then accept a lower salary. Can't see the logic in staying in the high paying contract for just a few more weeks, only to cause your employer to go bust.

£5,000 x 52 > £36,000 x 4

He might even miss out on that if they go under,

i'm not sure the in's and out's of contracts but if he was to go out now and find himself a new club would he not have to buy himself out of his contract? Yes he's probably got the money to do that but why should he be out of pocket?

I'm am not for one minute sticking up for him, he is one greedy man, along with many other footballers.

They would have to buy him out of his contract to get him to leave hence my suggestion he takes his 52x£5k and finds another club, whether the new buyer would accept that I don't know but it would be a decent compromise.

I agree.

My post was in response to AdamN - Where he was suggesting he goes and finds himself a new club now - If he did that he'd have to buy himself out of his contract would he not?

I'm not sure of the legal ins and outs of it all, but if he's doing Pompey a favour by going elsewhere then I would have thought they'd simply just allow him to leave, unless they want to be cunts about it (or if that's illegal for some reason).

2 weeks away from going to the wall it seems.

The sad thing is these players have more than enough to cope with losing a bit of dosh.

Mind you they'd say its a contract they were offered I guess.

If I were those players refusing to budge, then I don't think I'd be walking the streets of Portsmouth.

Yes they were offered stupid contracts (Tal Ben Heim on 35k!!!!) but it's just immoral to keep on bleeding them dry. Got to feel for the fans.

Of course clubs will find ways round it, playing bonuses, goal bonuses, free house for player and family, but they will not be tied into a ridiculous contract when they can't sustain it.

I do think that any club in any division is being naive and possibly even arrogant to not have a relegation clause written into every contract, that would protect them from things like this.

Feeling very sorry for the Pooroldpompey fans in all this. I know some of them are bastards and ran me out of town after that play off semi, but Pompey has a pretty solid, working class fan base and they knock the Scummers into a cocked hat. Hope the players come to their senses as the club would be a serious loss to the game for a while.

Talking to a Pompey fan yesterday , he thinks they'll go under. He works as a steward there, and they owe him wages from last season

Financially-stricken Portsmouth have confirmed striker Dave Kitson has agreed to terminate his contract, leaving only midfielder Liam Lawrence and defender Tal Ben Haim as the only professionals left on the books as the club seek to avoid liquidation.

Administrator Trevor Birch warned on July 24 that the npower League One club would go out of business on August 10 unless an agreement could be reached over the wages of their senior players.

Three were left after Kanu effectively walked away at the end of last month, and the south-coast outfit announced today that Kitson was also on his way out.

A club statement read: 'Pompey have reached an agreement with Dave Kitson over the termination of his contract.

'The 32-year-old striker has signed a compromise agreement over money outstanding for the final year of his contract.'

Birch said: "I'd like to thank Dave and his agent for the stance they've taken to give Portsmouth Football Club the best possible chance of survival.

'We thank Dave for his service to the club and wish him every success for the future.'

Kitson scored 12 goals in 72 appearances for Pompey after arriving from Stoke in August 2010.

Portsmouth's Tal Ben Haim has indicated he hopes to have some news on his future next week as Portsmouth look to get him off the wage bill.

Israeli defender Ben Haim and Liam Lawrence are the only two senior professionals left on the books at Fratton Park as the club look to offload their high earners to avoid the club going under.

Ben Haim was booed throughout by Portsmouth fans during Saturday's friendly win over Bolton with fans fearing the club will go into liquidation if the 30-year-old does not come to an agreement over his contract settlement.

The former Chelsea defender admits talks are ongoing to try and find a resolution and that there could be developments in the next 48 hours.

"We are still talking and hopefully I will have something to tell you by Tuesday," Ben Haim told the Sunday Express.

"There is not much more I can say at the moment. I don't want to say anything that will not be helpful.
