davieG Posted 20 March 2012 Posted 20 March 2012 Merc A football fan faces a bill of £200 after admitting swearing and making abusive gestures during a match. Coventry City supporter Aaron Li (21) pleaded guilty to using threatening words and behaviour during his team's defeat to Leicester City at the King Power Stadium on March 3. Ian Johnson, prosecuting at Leicester Magistrates' Court, said: "Police saw the defendant, who was in the section for visiting supporters, making offensive hand gestures towards Leicester City fans. "He was warned about his behaviour and told to stop, which he did. "But after a while he was heard to shout and swear at Leicester fans. "He was later warned to get back to his seat after the crowd surged forward following a penalty." Li was arrested shortly after city midfielder Neil Danns's seventh minute penalty was saved. In mitigation, Li, who was representing himself, said: "My behaviour and bad language wasn't towards any individual but a reaction to Leicester being awarded a penalty. I didn't think it was a penalty. "I'm very sorry for my behaviour. I accept it could have caused alarm or distress." Magistrate Brian Jarman told Li: "You can't go to football matches and behave like you were without inviting some sort of punishment." Li, of Gaza Close, Coventry, was fined £100, with £85 costs and a £15 victim of crime surcharge.
nothin2seehere Posted 20 March 2012 Posted 20 March 2012 "Supporter in attending football match and swearing shocker". I accept it could have caused alarm or distress I imagine the LCFC players neither care nor saw the actions of Mr Li, and I'm sure the LCFC fans were probably giving it large back anyway.
darko2k7 Posted 20 March 2012 Posted 20 March 2012 Well he was warned twice so he can not have any complaints . I do think some people have this idea that they can say and do what they like at a football match because it's just banter. Also who gets the £15 victim of crime surcharge
SystonFox Posted 20 March 2012 Posted 20 March 2012 What an odd story. Actually feel sorry for the bloke. I once got man handled by a copper for celebrating an equaliser against Leeds at the KP he thought I was crowd aggravating when all I was doing is jumping up and down like a loon. Two minutes earlier when they had gone 1-0 up their supporters charged at n block giving it the big un the other side of the police line growling at the kids and families in the family stand. I dont think it's my fault I was in the seat nearest the segregation and happened to be pleased when Hume equalised?!!!
goose2010 Posted 20 March 2012 Posted 20 March 2012 slightly harsh like you say as it happens alot at football but to be fair if he had been warned twice in 7 minutes! £15 surcharge goes into like a big pot and say if you got beat up and put into hospital and had to miss work you can claim the money back from 'the victim of crime fund'

They tried to hoy me out from N-block that match for "making inciting chants about the tragedy in Turkey"! Fortunately about ten random blokes nearby all told them they were talking bollocks and I'd done no such thing. Yet again, the police and stewards believe that all supporters are knuckle-dragging scum looking for a fight and treating them accordingly - despite the statistics proving exactly the opposite year on year.

This. We do seem to live in some parallel universe in england when it comes to treatment of fans, no idea why it is the way it is, its all too weird to understand.
Voll Blau Posted 20 March 2012 Posted 20 March 2012 Absolute joke. Whoever advised him to plead guilty needs to have a word wit themselves.

At Kettering - Lincoln the other month, despite there only being about 150 Lincoln fans half of Northamptonshire's constabulary were on duty (pointlessly) and produced a five-figure bill for Kettering's fans to try to raise the money to settle. Arrests? Nil. Trouble? Nil. Cost? £18,000.
jonlcfc1990 Posted 20 March 2012 Posted 20 March 2012 Can't believe people actually get done for swearing at football...There are literally thousands of us guilty of this "crime" Every weekend...Joke
MPH Posted 20 March 2012 Posted 20 March 2012 Absolute joke. Whoever advised him to plead guilty needs to have a word wit themselves. well, he represented himself.. But what an absolutel joke. Are the police really going to fine everyone who swears at a football game? I would expect to see them running onto the pitch to fine some of the players in that case...
AKCJ Posted 20 March 2012 Posted 20 March 2012 He has no defence because he was warned. But if you're fining people for swearing then you're going to be rolling in cash at football.
Guest Col city fan Posted 20 March 2012 Posted 20 March 2012 The question id ask is why was this particular bloke 'warned'... It sounds like he was mouthing off to the extreme? And having been 'warned' would have been wise to shut his gob. I'd imagine...
RowlattsFox Posted 20 March 2012 Posted 20 March 2012 Would love to know what he actually said because I bet it was more than your average swearing. Swearing is done a lot at football but people take it too far and it becomes annoying.

No surprise, I read this article about stockport a wjhile ago:- The chairman of a hard-up football club has accused top cops of deliberately over-policing their matches to raise cash. Stockport County chief Lord Peter Snape says Greater Manchester Police has sent dozens more officers than are needed to games at Edgeley Park. He says they are doing it to fund officers’ overtime after the force was hit by government funding cuts. He has also accused them of staging ‘training exercises’ at Edgeley Park – using Stockport games to give officers experience of policing matches, even though they are not needed. Police have hit back, saying that their presence has been both ‘necessary and proportionate’ and that they have worked to keep the bills down. Former Labour MP Lord Snape, a major shareholder at non-league County, has now written to Chief Constable Peter Fahy demanding a meeting. He said the final straw came at a recent home match with Wrexham. The game, which had a crowd of 4,518, was slapped with the highest security risk rating police can give for a non-league clash – leaving County with an £11,000 bill. Lord Snape said: "The cuts mean the police have a big shortfall to make up and this is one way of doing that. "The Wrexham game was ridiculous, especially when there was an EDL march going on in Hyde." Lord Snape launched a stinging attack on the police in his programme notes before County’s clash with Cambridge United last weekend. He said the club could not ‘continue to fund the overtime bills of GMP’. He revealed that County previously had to pay a £4,000 bill for a match against another Welsh side, Newport County, who brought 200 supporters – and labelled the police presence at that game ‘extravagant’. He is being backed by the town’s Labour group, who have also written to Mr Fahy to complain. But Chief Inspector Leon Jacobs, from GMP’s Stockport Division, rejected the claims. He said ‘open fighting’ between rival fans at the previous game between County and Wrexham in Wales led to the increased police presence. Mr Jacobs said: "As a force, we strongly feel special events should not be policed to the detriment of the community and we bring additional officers in for these events rather than taking existing officers away from their front-line duties. "We have worked to reduce the cost of policing and have only charged for six fixtures at Edgeley Park this season. Notably on these occasions policing has been a requirement due to information on planned disorder by risk groups. A review of these fixtures has indicated that the levels of policing was both necessary and proportionate, as it was found to be during a similar review after the Wrexham fixture. We are proud to support Stockport County and look forward to continuing to do so."
wellyfox Posted 20 March 2012 Posted 20 March 2012 Football's turning so pathetic. Is it I was at Wolves yrs ago when Jimmy Melrose scored the winner 5 mins from time. All the game the banter was flowing and the cops stood 3 feet from us did nothing. Then the ball hit the back of the net n they started pulling fans out for swearing. My mate stood nxt to me said to me not chanting. This is fvcking stupid N wooosh he was gone. Met him outside after he said them that went quietly were just thrown out them that argued were nicked. So 85mins of abuse was fine till we scored THATS PATHETIC

Ilkeston_Fox Posted 20 March 2012 Posted 20 March 2012 What a load of b0llocks!! This is typical, you can't do one person when the whole bloody stand (their corner and our stand) was doing exactly the same thing. I don't care if he's a Cov fan and deserves it. Yes a lot of their lot were gesturing, but there were plenty doing it in our end to. How about you just leave them to it....if, IF something kicks off outside (or inside) THEN start arresting people - How many times has that happened this season??? Not many if I remember correctly..... I stand to be corrected though. I saw a lot of the 'stewarding' and policing at Chelsea that pissed me of far more than any Chelsea fan (ok, maily because their fans were cardboard cut-outs placed in the seats and only moved when it got a bit windy) but it's the same at every ground. You just take the 'abuse and gesturing' with a pinch of salt and give it back. The stewards in particular seem to cause more trouble than anything else. Little bloody Hitlers! Just my humble opinion...rant over
NeilyBoy Posted 20 March 2012 Posted 20 March 2012 I'm glad there's so much consensus on this: Whenever I show up to steward at Brighton matches the amount of police vans that roll up to the ground is frankly upsetting when you consider John Q Public is needlessly paying for it. I'm not sure I've even heard a Brighton fan using a naughty word.
wellyfox Posted 20 March 2012 Posted 20 March 2012 Makes you wonder why they do it, maybe they are trying to justify their presence. No I'd say local cops suport local sides and over react. But they are the law and your nothing and not gonna win.
purpleronnie Posted 20 March 2012 Posted 20 March 2012 No I'd say local cops suport local sides and over react. But they are the law and your nothing and not gonna win. Not always true of course. £184,850 of compensation has been awarded to 80 Stoke fans locked in a pub in Irlam by Greater Manchester Police before a Manchester United game. The police imprisoned the fans under Section 27 of the Violent Crime Reduction Act, in which police are granted powers to direct individuals who represent a risk of disorder. GMP was later forced to admit it acted in error following complaints from the Football Supports’ Federation (FSF). As MULE reported at the time back in February 2009, officers instructed the Stoke City supporters to “urinate into cups”, refusing them access to the toilet facilities and illegally serving the fans with police notices. An FSF spokesman reported that they had spoken to the pub landlord upon the fans’ release who had said that the supporters’ behaviour was so good, he would make them sandwiches if they returned. GMP said it had misguidedly acted on “intelligence” and has offered the fans, along with compensation, a letter of apology from Assistant Chief Constable Ian Hopkins
Mack Posted 20 March 2012 Posted 20 March 2012 Sounds like an excuse to eject a toe rag. There were enough of them up in that corner.
