Burton Albion goalkeeper Kevin Poole has announced his retirement at the end of the season at the age of 48.

Poole has enjoyed a career spanning 32 years, playing for Leicester, Birmingham, Middlesbrough, Bolton, Aston Villa and Derby as well as having loan spells at Hartlepool and Northampton.

He joined Burton in 2006 and made 123 appearances during his time at the Pirelli Stadium, as well as undertaking the role of goalkeeping coach recently.

"I have thought about retirement for a while and as long as I have been at Burton I have decided at the end of each season whether I am fit enough to carry on," Poole told the club's official website. "The time has come now where it takes a couple of days for me to recover after each match I play so I think it is time to knock it on the head."

Poole's last senior appearance for Albion was in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy second round against Rotherham in October 2011.

He is the oldest player currently registered with the Football League.

From Wiki

In 1991, Poole signed for Leicester City and went on to make 194 appearances in all competitions for the club between 1991 and 1997.[3] He was part of the Leicester side that won promotion to the Premier League in 1996, but subsequently lost his position to Kasey Keller

Enjoy your retirement Kevin you served us well you were a credit LCFC and to the football.

To carry on playing at League 2 level at 48, is rather impressive. Thanks for your contribution to LCFC and enjoy your retirement Kevin.

Absolutely immense during my first season watching City in that promotion winning side, and I hope this frees him up to make some half time appearances with the club in the future. Must be in fantastic shape to play in the Football League at his age.

Fantastic achievment for any player to reach that age and still be playing, especially at a high/decent level.

Kevin Poole was still playing football!!?? And I was shocked that Kasey Keller just retired recently. Who is Gavin Ward playing for these days??? (The goalkeeper not the shit stained, wanky lesbian face referee)

It's unbelievable he is still playing!!

Good luck to a footballer who obviously played for love of the game.

I may head down to their final fixture on May 5th, I expect he will be there be nice to see him at his last game registered as a player.

Ill never forget the time he was arguing with the ref against Everton and Barmby stuck the ball in an empty net!

Enjoy your retirement Kevin.

Wasn't he made player of the season once and he dropped the glass trophy when it was presented.

Enjoy your retirement Kevin.

His argument was that it was outside the area and Barmby took a quick freekick inside the area. Should have been ruled out......

Had no idea he was still playing.

Quality servant to the club, complete hero.

Also showed us that you don't have to be a lanky bastard to be a great goalie.

Good lukc Kev!
