European Football = Cringe

Having watched Chelsea v Barca and tonight Athletic Bilbao v Sporting Lisbon I have decided that I just can't watch European football anymore. It is too embarassing to watch.

I can't believe how easily all of the players go down, and how they play act as if they've been punched every time they are touched. It really is pathetic. I've seen harder tackles in under 12s matches.

Yes, with the top teams the football can be majestic at times. The passing and movement can be brilliant, but I just cannot stand the unsporting behaviour. It is disgusting at times.

What's even more weird is that the fantastic fans get so angry at these minor fouls. And how the referees always buy the dives. Don't they know the rules of football?

I'm so glad I'm born in England and can watch Championship football where it is still a contact (and mostly honest) sport!

This, I do appreciate the style of football, but it's unbelievably cringeworthy sometimes. Still enjoy watching it though and I'm staying in France and Spain next year so I'm going to have to tough it out :P.

So, born in England, hate European football?

Let me just go check my map...

It can be a bit pansyish at times, but it's not exactly a rarity in our leagues as well.

Really?? I'm sorry but I'm going to have to bring acooling's signature to the fore, as it sums up how I feel about this subject.

And Al - there may be some pansying around in this country these days but if you watched even just the match last night you'd have seen that it's at a whole different level abroad. Although I'd say "frustrating" would be a better word than "cringeworthy" to describe just how often the same scenario occurs: nothing tackle results in furious blowing of ref's whistle, monumental roars from the crowd, and a ludicrous amount of rolling around and feigned "agony"...

Totally agreed.

The mentality of fouling now is so wrong it's absolutely incredible. I'm either going mad or loads of people are just idiots who think that for example, Young being tapped on the shoulder is a good enough excuse to go flying because "there was contact".

I am surely not the only one who finds this absolutely incredible? lol

It ruins El Clasico for me. I think it's getting worse over here but thankfully we're actually one of the best, or should I say, least bad, in the world.

Which is a joke because I find the sportingness (word?) of players in England to be pretty appalling.

No one seems to give a shit for some reason.

I can't see what Finners has posted due to blockers at work blocking so might be repeating what he says but how any English supporter can complain about cheating and play acting when Ashley Young is throwing himself around in the penalty box week in week out is laughable.

Also the biggest play actor during the Chelsea Barce game was Dider Drogba.

Grow a dick and stop conforming to a sterotype, you don't even watch enough European football to have an opinion.

His main point is that you'd never see the like of the right honourable Alan Sheehan diving,

Not his style, he more of a harrasment kind of guy, diving has been prevelent in our second tier for a very long time given one cost us promotion I would expect most Leicester fans to know this.

Diving is everywhere I saw some moron dive in a Sunday League game this year was embarassing.

The word Cringe = Cringe

Fully agree.

Not a real huge fan of European football, only have an interest in la liga outside England really.

I watch a lot of European football, German, Spanish and French. I enjoy them a lot, the only one I don't watch or rarely watch, should I say, is Italian football as I think the standard has gone down quite a bit in recent years.

Did you watch a Champions League game that Howard Webb refereed? HW used to the contact of the EPL, players weren't, so HW had to give all of the little fouls after about 20 minutes as the players were just getting on his back and expecting those fouls to be given as free kicks.

When Young did that 2 weeks in succession there was a big reaction in the press and from ex-players.

That kind of cheating is evident constantly all over the pitch in European football and is the norm for them.

Just switched over to the CLF to see the end of ET and maybe pens. First thing I see is a terrible dive by Swine-sty-ger basically pivoting around Mikel's leg lol Shocking.

Why do people confuse 'diving and play acting is on another level in Europe' with 'No English player has ever dived'? Please try and understand the point being made instead of going into a defensive politically correct ball.
