RowlattsFox Posted 16 May 2012 Posted 16 May 2012 I really don't get the uproar about Ferdinand not going, yet at the same time people are saying same old names getting picked. He has only played in two of the qualifying games, and we failed to win both. Fergie even said he cannot play 2 games in 4 days anymore. Maybe if he didn't pull of the friendlies so easily he'd still be in the squad.

RowlattsFox Posted 16 May 2012 Posted 16 May 2012 There's literally no uproar. Well maybe uproar is a bit strong, but there is certainly enough people thinking he should have gone. Especially those within the game and journalists.
Ilkeston_Fox Posted 16 May 2012 Posted 16 May 2012 I just can't get worked up about international football. Don't get me wrong, I'll watch it, but I'm not like some of the people at work who are salivating like Dick Dastardly in 1st position nearing the finishing line in The Wacky Races. Yes I want us to do well, but I can't be the only person not going banana's about the Euro's?

It's the cornerstone of a great summer.
Fox92 Posted 16 May 2012 Posted 16 May 2012 Ferdinand should get done for that 'Woy' image on Twitter. That is seperating someone because he has a speaking problem, and shouldn't be allowed, yet as soon as someone says something too Ferdinand or whatever, he's straight out there moaning. Imagine the uproar if the likes of Terry, Barton, Tevez or Suarez did something like that (if two of them were English). Hypocrite.

Tielemans63 Posted 16 May 2012 Author Posted 16 May 2012 What did Rio do? I can't see anything on his Twitter feed? Wore a T-shirt that said, "Woy, do I look bovvered?" Although I'm a bit thrown by this because SSN were reporting that it was Richards who did it - not Ferdy???
ScouseFox Posted 16 May 2012 Posted 16 May 2012 Pretty sure what I saw on Twitter was photoshopped from a fake account. I don't follow Ferdinand but what I saw retweeted was a picture of him holding an england flag saying "Woy, do i look bovered?" which I'm pretty sure he didn't actually do.

There's no way he did that. He's a bit mouthy but I don't think he's that much of a twat.
Guest ttfn Posted 16 May 2012 Posted 16 May 2012 Forget Carroll and forget Crouch, why should either be picked ahead of Grant Holt? Serious question - what does Carroll have that Holt doesn't, besides a ridiculous transfer fee? Both scored well in the Championship, both had a good first season in the Prem but Holt is currently on form and scoring for fun in a reasonably average side. Age, much faster, commits fewer fouls, notorious "big-game player". I mean, I don't rate Carroll particularly highly at all, but he's clearly a better option than Holt, not only for the future, but for now. It speaks volumes for the paucity of our striking options that people are suggesting Holt as anything other than a joke

ScouseFox Posted 16 May 2012 Posted 16 May 2012 But why is Holt a joke? Apart from your obvious dislike for him as a footballer, why is it a joke that he's been suggested? He's scored more goals than anyone English and available for the first two games, for considerably worse teams than most the others. He's captained his team, scored against United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, Everton and Newcastle. Not sure what age has to do with it, he's hardly going to die in his sleep over the next 4 weeks, nor does he need a wheelchair to move round. I'm not sure what basis you have to say that Andy Carroll is "clearly a better option now" compared to Holt. Obviously your opinion is your opinion, but I'd have Holt over Carroll based on this season, he's been at least ten times better. If both had played out the same seasons but at each others clubs nobody would even mention Andy Carroll. If he'd been signed for a few hundred thousand and scored about 5 goals for Norwich nobody would even know he existed. He was bought for a British record fee, I reckon that's played a big part in him getting a place on the plane.
Tielemans63 Posted 16 May 2012 Author Posted 16 May 2012 Is the picture going round Twitter by the way. It'd be quite ironic if he did make his flag, write and cut out a placard and post a Tweet to millions all to say how not bothered he is. Prob someone up to mischief.

I'm bloody fed-up already of hearing that Carroll was picked after 'a strong finish to the season'. He had a v good half an hour against a spent Chelsea side in a game he was on the bench for. If getting into promising positions only to butcher the chance constitutes a strong end to the season then fine otherwise that just isn't true.

Holt has been played in a team which exclusively exists to fit his style of play. He would not get the same service for England, and rightly so too. We've got better options than just throwing cross after cross into the penalty area (although whether we manage to do so is questionable given recent history). I've stated the reasons that Carroll should be in the squad ahead of Holt above. In an ideal world I wouldn't have Carroll at all, but we don't have many options. For starters he is in good form. Secondly he scored the winner in the FA Cup Semi-Final and played brilliantly in the final. He makes good defenders shit themselves. Quite why, I'm not sure, but he does. Last season, he was the second top English scorer, much like Holt was this season. So either form counts in your opinion that Holt should be selected (and Carroll is in good form) or it doesn't and you go on track record (and Carroll's is better). For better or worse, Carroll is the man in possession, and it's not like Grant Holt has banged in 30 goals like Kevin Phillips did in a newly-promoted side and made himself a clear pick. He's had a decent season, but I'd suggest to you that quite the opposite of your argument is true. Had Holt not had this fairytale rise from tyre-fitter to Premier League footballer, nobody would think much of him. As for your comment that he's been "at least ten times better", I'll leave you to dwell on how accurate you believe that to be. Nonetheless, I can see to an extent where you're coming from, but as I say, the fact that Holt is even being considered by anybody shows just how bad things have got, and also quite how far Carroll has fallen in many people's eyes over the past 12 months.

Im guessing its because Holt's image and game is very dirty, and he's only been in the Prem for one year. I agree that he is a great player, and if he carries on like he is at Norwich or wherever, he will be in or around the England setup soon.

And scored the winner against Everton in the cup semi-final. And bossed the league game against Chelsea. The manager who had him on the bench for the cup final has just been sacked, by the way.
