France shootings: Girl hid under bodies in car

Related StoriesA four-year-old girl has been found hiding inside a British-registered car in which three bodies were discovered eight hours earlier, French police say.

The bodies of two women and a male driver - all thought to be British - were found near Lake Annecy in the Alps on Thursday. A cyclist, said to be a local man, was found shot dead nearby.

Officials said the unharmed girl was hiding under one of the bodies.

A second, older girl was lying in the road and is in a critical condition.

Police say the driver of the BMW was a UK citizen and they believe all those dead in the vehicle were part of a British family on holiday.

The British Foreign Office (FCO) is trying to establish their identities.

Prosecutor Eric Maillaud said the little girl, who spoke English, was found hiding under the legs of one of the women at about midnight local time (22:00 GMT).

He said the girl, who is being looked after by French authorities, was only found when special investigators reached the scene - long after police had sealed off the area.

"She was hidden under the bodies for some eight hours and didn't move for the whole time," he said.

He added: "The little girl spoke English. She had heard the noises, the cries, but she couldn't say more - she is only four years old."

The older girl, variously reported as aged seven or eight, was taken by helicopter to hospital.

She was said to be in a more stable condition on Thursday morning, according to officials.

The older girl was initially reported to have died of her injuries but Mr Maillaud, who had announced her death, later issued a correction.

Mr Maillaud said the family was on a camping holiday on the edge of Lake Annecy in the Haute-Savoie region, a popular tourist destination.

The bodies were found in a car park in a quiet, forested area in the foothills of the Alps.

Another cyclist who came across the scene at about 16:00 local time (14:00 GMT) on Wednesday was said to be in shock.

British consular staff arrived in Grenoble on Thursday morning and are on the way to the scene to work with French authorities, an FCO spokesman said.

The area has been sealed off by police, who have started a criminal investigation into what they are calling a multiple murder.

Some 15 spent cartridges from an automatic pistol were found at the crime scene.

Head of the investigation, Benoit Vinnemann, said: "The three bodies found in the car appear to be the father, mother and grandmother.

"It is in any case a family, according to British people at the Saint Jorioz camping site who reported their disappearance on Wednesday night," he added.

I am genuinely shocked and sickened by this. What would possess someone to do this? Why this family? Shooting a little girl. I hope this man/woman gets caught and brought to justice soon.

You cant even begin to imagine how the 4 year old girl feels, she has to carry this with her for her life, her mental state will have been seriously compromised

Absolutely sickening.

It really is beyond comprehension at the moment, maybe more details will come to light and we will know whether it was a targeted attack, or a random assault by a lone nutter, the fact that a cyclist seemingly unconnected with the family was shot, makes me think it was the latter, but either way it is a horrific incident.

Given the weapon used and the fact someone unrelated was killed too, seems like either a professional job (for whatever reason, perhaps the family were just in the wrong place at the wrong time) or a lone nut (though I think there would have been more killings had that been the case).

Either way it's sickening.

Nut job. Or professional killing of one subject made to look like the work of a nut job. Or witnesses to the murder of the cyclist which needed removing from the equation.......

Horrendous.

Just been talking about it on the radio (Vine)... Apparently her sister was found hurt as well, she's 8 I think it said.

Not sure if connected, or just a random attack.

It sounds like the prologue to a fictional story or action film, unreal. You'd assume the girl can't speak French, which must add to the horror of not even being able to understand what's going on around her at the time.

The local police were told not to enter the car until forensics showed up because of the state of the shots. They looked in through the windows and a helicopter thermally examined the car without the child showing up.

What's really strange is that the brit cyclist who found them was overtaken by the french cyclist who was killed in the incident. When he got there the older girl was still on her feet.

Ahh my mate told me they had searched the car before forensics showed up....

Wasn't Wiggins then

Tragic incident, can't imagine the terror the poor girls went through, does look like all the makings of some sort of professional hit though with the witness being shot at the scene as well. :(

So, so tragic. As for what that poor little 4-year-old girl has lived through..... :nono::cry:

Terrible incident that I fear we may only know the truth of if (hopefully) the older girl survives her wounds. I'm suspicious it was a hit that went terribly wrong. Apparently only three bullets hit the car.

Incidentally, when I went into work this morning, one of my colleagues announced how dangerous France was as he had heard on the news there was someone "going round killing British people!" Sadly he was also talking to people who would not only taske him on his word without ever checking the news themselves, but would probably further embellish the story.

I fully expect to go into work tomorrow and have it announced that we are at war with France.

France is a pretty violent place, huge problems in quite a lot of french suburbs.

BBC reporting that a line of inquiry is a family dispute over money.

Over 100,000 Iraqis have died in the last 10 years with little thought for them, 3 are killed in a car in France and we`re all disgusted.

I guess the old saying is true, 1 death is a tragedy a million is a statistic

You're right we should invade and sort that country out...

The reason why these things hit home more is that could have been one of us, if it was a random lone nutter and not a targeted hit.

Like the Batman shootings, we can imagine ourselves being in a cinema, or going on holiday in France, and something like this unexpected, unexplained happens and bam, you're dead, one of your kids is buried under your dead body for hours, while your other child is injured on the road. It is called empathy.

It is much harder to put ourselves in a worn torn Islamic state run by a dictator, or an impoverished African village hit by an outbreak of typhoid.

Posted

No it isn't.

Why not? It proves you can kill alot of people very quickly with one which is the reason for them being banned over here.
