The People's Hero Posted 15 January 2013 Posted 15 January 2013 Anyone played squash? Is it easy to pick up? Is it good for keeping fit? I know I'm never going to be great at any sport, but I want something to keep me a bit fit and be a bit of fun. There is a squash club 30 yards or so from where I'm sat now (at work) so it would be ideal.
goose2010 Posted 15 January 2013 Posted 15 January 2013 only played it a few times and feck me it is hard work! great fitness and easy to pick up really. The first time i played i thought i was going to die, i wouldnt say i am at my peak of pyshcial fitness (play football on a sunday morning every week) but it is a killer if you're not very good at it. Oh yeah it hurts if you get hit by the ball as well! apart from that i really enjoyed it.
Unabomber Posted 15 January 2013 Posted 15 January 2013 squash is the best sport for burning calories/increasing metabolism due to it being a form of HIIT. It's also really fun imo so it is addictive and easy to want to keep playing.
The People's Hero Posted 15 January 2013 Author Posted 15 January 2013 I thought as much. I'm going to give it a go I think. I know I won't be very good, but if I burn some calories, I'll be happy.

pSinatra Posted 15 January 2013 Posted 15 January 2013 Absolutely knackering, but fun & no having to fetch the ball. Make sure the squash ball has a blue dot & not a yellow one!!
Finnegan Posted 15 January 2013 Posted 15 January 2013 The best thing about this subtle WUMing is that it'll go over nearly everyone's heads.
Smudge Posted 15 January 2013 Posted 15 January 2013 I used to play a lot, three times a week. Have lessons, knowing some of the rebound angle will save a lot of running. Do not play with someone who cannot play reasonable well, you'll get hurt. getting the ball in the small of the back or worse being hit by their racquet is painful

So I'm better off playing against someone good from the start?
Finnegan Posted 15 January 2013 Posted 15 January 2013 Interesting. So I'm better off playing against someone good from the start? If only there was someone else on the forum who was good at squash.
The People's Hero Posted 15 January 2013 Author Posted 15 January 2013 If only there was someone else on the forum who was good at squash. Haha. I wouldn't mind a good schooling from Tone! He beat a European champion once I think. Good enough for me!
Smudge Posted 15 January 2013 Posted 15 January 2013 If only there was someone else on the forum who was good at squash. I think I might be making a tit of myself here.
Guest BlueBrett Posted 15 January 2013 Posted 15 January 2013 It's dead easeh. They should make the balls bouncier
The People's Hero Posted 15 January 2013 Author Posted 15 January 2013 I think I might be making a tit of myself here. Not at all. Despite the coincidence (which I'd forgotten about), I am genuinely considering squash. There is a squash club opposite my office so I might just be able to motivate myself to play.
NewburyFox Posted 15 January 2013 Posted 15 January 2013 Interesting. So I'm better off playing against someone good from the start? Yes, otherwise the ball will never come back to you and you won't get it warmed up properly.
MooseBreath Posted 15 January 2013 Posted 15 January 2013 A short fat colleague at work plays all the time. I guess being short makes it easier hence why he is still fat. He's a proper quitter most of the time so the fact that he has stuck at it for several years must mean he genuinely enjoys it.
Mack Posted 15 January 2013 Posted 15 January 2013 This sport is a serious middle aged man killer. Heard lots of stories about blokes having heart attacks whilst playing Squash.
Tommy G Posted 15 January 2013 Posted 15 January 2013 My other half has won the ladies leicestershire county champ and played in the england squad, very tough sport which I prefer watching to playing. Keeps you fit mind
Charl91 Posted 15 January 2013 Posted 15 January 2013 Used to play fairly often at Uni. Such a fun game! As long as you and your partner can hit a decent rally, then it's knackering.

There is a squash club opposite my office so I might just be able to motivate myself to play. Ok! One other piece of advice I can give you is about equipment. The right shoes are more important than the racquet, the lateral stress on your feet need serious support; any old pair of tennis shoes won't do.
p_kam Posted 15 January 2013 Posted 15 January 2013 yea i play it is a very good sport to get healthy. it is better for cardio than football, as you are contently doing short bursts. i play at Beaumont leys leisure center, were it is free if you are a member of any council gym. i would recommend the sport to anyone. but it is not the easiest of sports. i would recommend you start playing with someone who is the same level.
vandamman Posted 15 January 2013 Posted 15 January 2013 If its the first time you have played Squash I would personally recommend playing against somebody who is experienced, as its a sport you can develop bad habits with and as you say not the easiest sport to play straight away. Plus if you're doing it for fitness, somebody who can easily hit the ball back will ensure you get a sweat on! Its a great sport and a pretty social one too, underrated imo.
danny. Posted 15 January 2013 Posted 15 January 2013 Amazing game, my fave to play - more so than football. So underrated.
AoWW Posted 15 January 2013 Posted 15 January 2013 The best thing about this subtle WUMing is that it'll go over nearly everyone's heads. Not everyone's. I sniggered in a very immature way.
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 15 January 2013 Posted 15 January 2013 My other half has won the ladies leicestershire county champ and played in the england squad, very tough sport which I prefer watching to playing. Keeps you fit mind I genuinely thought you were gay. Sorry.
