Is sport pointless?

In the 70s, i decided that bodybuilding and wrestling were a joke

In the 80s i realised that Athletics and the olympics had been bought

In the 90s I discovered that cycling wasnt quite so much about the rider and the bikes

In the 00s I realised that cricket would never be the same

And now...

For years when ive watched amazing results, surprise decisions and "great moments" thinking that, THIS, was what sport was all about, the great FA cup upset, the amazing comeback, the incredibly blind referee.

But as with all of the above "sports", every game, every goal, every decision is now questioned...

Did they throw it?

Did he let it in?

Has he been paid?

The talk about business and sitting and the flask and prawn sandwich brigade killing our game is just a diversion.

If the sport is corrupt....its pointless.

Everything's corrupt. Everything is 'pointless'.

But not everything in the sport is corrupt. I think there will be the odd high profile game that is fixed, and sometimes it's by the fat cats that supposedly run the game.

But I doubt any championship game has been fixed this season. In at least 99.9% of matches, in England at least, I believe everyone is trying to do things to the best of their ability (sadly the referees ability is often minimal).

Just goes through a cycle. Anything popular ends up being a business which turns it shit for the majority and eventually we find a new fad. Football's a pretty unique one though as it seems to stand popular no matter how shit it's turning.

We're all gonna die at some point. Everything we ever say, everything we ever do, everyone we ever love, everyone we ever hate, every time we laugh, every time we cry, it's all pointless. Life is a futile struggle. We'll all eventually be enveloped by the darkness.

So, in summary, UP THE FOXES! :scarf::pearson:

Maybe Oz falling out with sport is just him getting older, there have always been problems in mostly all sports.

The magical days of running around in the innocence of youth, watching your heros on the pitch and fresh hot-dogs are long behind you (maybe not oz there). You see more of the bad things, if its pointless to you; exersize it

You could well be right, the innocence of youth is perhaps replaced by the cynicism of old age.

And perhaps there never was a time when it was "pure"... i guess the comments made in this topic will guide me.

It depends on what you look for in a sport.

If you are looking for entertainment/distraction, an escape from reality a chance to scream and shout at heroes and villains, feel part of something bigger than you are and witness moments of unpredictable brilliance and stupidity, then sport isn't pointless, if you only case about the result then you could argue this makes it pointless, but then I would argue you are already missing out on a lot of sport.

You could argue that this just adds a further dimension to the soap opera that is sport.

People still watch wrestling even though they know it is completely staged.

Even when sport is predictable and even when people cheat we still enjoy talking about it. Plus there are few things better for the soul than a bit of sports participation

It gives us something to moan about when everything else in your life is going ok.

I can understand what Oz is going on about but on a different level.

Ive had an ST for 20 odd years but these last few years ive grown increasing bored by it all.

Even tho we've done brill this season and some of the footy is great ive sat there and wondered what the fcuk am i doing here?

Might have something to do with growing up and having a family and losing a couple of family members i think about the hours spent watching a load of mainly overpaid premadonnas kicking a bag of air around and most of it not very well...surely there is more to my sad life than that??

Ive come to the point of already deciding i wont be renewing my ST after all these years...unless we get promotion that is!!! :pearson:
