Character Limit

Recommended Posts

I've noticed recently some people seem to be writing essays on here as replies on posts. None of us have time for that!

How would we all feel about a twitter style character limit??

I'd personally like the chance to be able to read threads in a couple minutes to get an overview of what's going on.

I'd suggest its a bad idea and would put people off. Do we really want to dumb down? (That isn't a criticism by the way)

Completely understand that.

Really just wondering what people thought of it. I know I prefer posters who can get there point across quickly.

No way Jose! Could you imagine the txt spk m8. Shit would not garnish this readers grill. Just scan the long posts. Or read the first few lines. Or check the poster and if you read ft often enough you soon learn whose posts are worth reading and whose aren't. I don't like reading a wall of text any more than the next man, but the last thing we need is to dumb this forum down even more. We already have fif contributing to serious threads and sphericalfox trying to be funny and kingfox wanking over himself in every thread. Any more stupidity and the good posters might start to leave.

Well boo hoo, learn to read quicker :P

Normally if there is a long post I skim it, then if people's replies to it are interesting then I might go back and re-read it, but normally you can tell where it is going after the first couple of lines, especially on the main forum.

Another option is to have a preview of posts longer than say 5 lines, so you are not confronted by a wall of text, and you can click show more if you want to, I've seen this on other forums.

Sorry but I only read that post to the end of the first line.

Aw, desperately trying to the voice of reason and the majority? The irony of your last sentence is hilarious considering what a forum troll you are and your shite transparent efforts at doing so contribute to the decline in both quality and variety on FT!

If you don't want to read long posts, don't read long posts.

I would, however, like to see a feature that automatically applied something like the "spoiler" tool when people quote long posts.

I hate seeing an enormous post quoted with someone just saying "I agree" at the end.

Maybe a filter for each user, or maybe a collapse option where just the first few lines of each post are shown and then you can click to 'read more'?

Gmail has a similar feature and I hated it. I had to constantly to open and collapse each of emails to read their content and the effort which is needed to open/collapse each email until you got the one that you needed is ridiculous and you end up with a ugly looking webpage consisting of half collapsed emails.

Pretty sure this is already a built in feature (although it appears to be disabled). You just change thread view from default (how you see it now) to a mode called 'Linear'

Just to prove a point, I've posted my dissertation.

Terrible idea to limit characters, sometimes you need to discuss issues in depth.

Anyway, back to being an arsehole.

Now removed diss. 12,500 words on Working Class Fiction is an extreme way to prove a point I reckon.

Spherical, moosey will you two just **** and get it over with? Seeing all this sexual tension aired around the forum is incredibly tedious.

It's like he has a hard-on for mysel, Daggers, Nickf and Fif.All this constant bumhole and gay jibes and public admission of missus issues all lead to one conclusion.

If he refers negatively to me I am well within my rights to put him 'straight', unfortunately he craves attention, and a dog with a bone etc...
