A query for fellow FTers.

As the title asks, is there a point to life?

I'm asking out of existential curiousity.

I think it's interesting to see how others view their lives and whether or not there is an actual point to what we do on a daily basis.

You live, so there is a point.

Whether there is anything more does not matter, you exist, you think and feel and you learn.

So long as this universe exists you will always have existed in your finite moment of time.

Even if it were all to be as ephemeral as a dream, it is still a dream worth having. that is my opinion anyway.

In nature life is to procreate and to survive, these are base instincts that survive through to today's human beings...

...but we have so much more to our lives now, and we live in a world where surviving and procreating is a given, and there are no barriers to that (I'm talking 1st world here).

So we look for further meaning we create societies, sport, money, jobs, to re-create the problems we would have had in the wild, instead of hunting for food, we hunt for money and use that to buy things that feed our minds/bodies/souls, instead of competing for mates we compete for trinkets.

There is no further meaning to life than to survive and spawn, but we owe it to ourselves to find a higher purpose, to create a value system that we can stick to, that we can believe in, we owe it to ourselves to give our lives purpose and ensure we live a good life and not hurt anyone in the process, and look to improve and grow mentally as well as physically, to be the best that we can be.

Edit: I have gone for the second option on the poll, yes - to better ourselves and others, as it is closest to what I'm saying, but I don't believe that is the point to life, but I believe we should make that the point of our lives.

This is exactly what I was thinking last night.

Back in the day before the revolution the human or animal had to fight/survive for food and the animal had a chance of surviving... Once Farming became global this process became irrelevant as the animal did not have the chance to survive because it was always destined to be killed...

So with this in mind, surely there must be a reason to life.

The reason is procreation, and surviving long enough to procreate, if we didn't have this reason, we would have died out. Without those motivations we seek out other activities to pursue to fill the gap left by our primitive urges, those of fighting and hunting and competing for the best mates.

Farm animals are different as even if they lost the drive to reproduce, they would still be artificially inseminated and forced to breed.

The point of life is whatever you make of it.

Man has managed to fool humanity into thinking that there is a point to life re the afterlife so that "life" isn't made into a complete "hell" by people realising that they may just as well do what they want whilst they are alive.

The point is no procreation, that is just a part of life, if that is the aim then we are even more limited than I thought.

I didn't say point I said reason, these are our base instincts and they boil down to one thing and one thing only, reproduction, and everything in nature is geared towards reproducing, if you had read my first post, you would see that I also said that we owe it to ourselves to give our lives a higher purpose and meaning, and to be the best we can.

That's better. arguing is the point to life.

Next question.

You're getting confused with internet forums.

Though it seems that for some people, that is life.

unless you are an important celebrity like Justin Bieber or an inventor like......................... that bloke with the funny hair then your life means nothing. best you can hope for is to be reasonably happy.

A crime a day keeps the dog leash away.

But you'll never know you're on a leash if you always stay close to the peg

I'm starting to think there isn't much point in it.

:( I know that feeling.

This question is really lots of different questions. There are many philosophical and scientific debates that could fit into that question, involving universes, the mind, the afterlife, the matrix (I only saw that movie once but I think I get the gist of it), etc. All of which end up at the same answer really - 'unsure'.

If we just take life at face value, the 'point' really is just to make the best of it. Whether that's personal satisfaction or leaving a legacy or whatever. It doesn't always work out like that though, of course.
