All the cars I think look alright are apparently 'unfun to drive' or I 'should disregard cosmetic appearances' It's well annoying. If it's a first car I shouldn't really get bogged down by it all and just get what I like the look of. Clio is a decent buy, even the 1.2 8v is nippy enough as a starter car. Just make sure the cambelt is OK. If you go for a Corsa, it is again worth going for the 1.2. It's just as economical as the 1.0 but a lot nippier. Old Fiestas (prior to 2002) aren't great either, decent to drive but very dated otherwise.

It's pretty much a lottery whatever you buy & that is the same for any car you buy - new or old. It seems to me that insurance dictates the cars new drivers drive. How much you looking to spend on the motor itself? Like you've already said, people will have good & bad stories about whatever cars you're looking at. In my experience I would never go anywhere near a Vauxhall - but then there will be others that swear by them.

Can get Corsas and Clios for around that which is why I mentioned them in the OP. For a first car there's no point going crazy is there? I just want something that I won't be ashamed to be seen in and won't die on me just because it's got over 100k miles on the clock.

At the end of the day, it was pretty much the insurance quotes that picked the car rather than me. If you download the autotrader app on your phone then you can do a quick vehicle check for £3.99. Saved me wasting my time on cars that seemed to cheap to be true.
Deucalion Posted 29 April 2013 Posted 29 April 2013 My first car was a 1978 Honda CB125. I loved it to pieces but it was probably shit ! My first decent car was a Yamaha RD350 YPVS. Yep...both bikes. Seriously, Nissan Micras are decent cars for young 'ens. My stepdaughter recently bought one. Loads of space inside, low insurance, quite nippy and don't even have a cambelt, so that nightmare can't happen.

I suppose if you buy a car for around £2k........there is room for it to lose value over a couple of years. When you buy in the £1k (or less) region......they pretty much hold their price & you can re-sell for nearly the same as what you paid. There's little room for depreciation. I've had a couple of Focus's......mkI & mkII. They were both really solid cars, cheap to run, fun to drive & neither gave me any mechanical trouble, apart from the occasional wiper blade, bulb, etc. To be honest, the mkI was a better drive. They might be a bit bigger than what you're looking for & a bit boring........but boring might make them a bit cheaper to insure? Bigger might not be badder?

whoareyaaa Posted 29 April 2013 Posted 29 April 2013 You want something in the 1.3 range or they will sting you on the insurance, Corsa, Polo, Fiesta or a A reg Micra What ever you do don't buy a 1.6 ford focus, drinks petrol like shit 28 miles to the gallon! plus 2k insurance big mistake.

Once I turned 21 my quotes dropped right down, I had a Fiesta at the time, went from £1300 a year to £700. Might be able to get something better than you'd think; just because it's a "first car', doesn't mean it has to be shit.

Is it cos of more readily available finance deals or are young chaps purely living outside their means and overspending on a flash car / insurance? My first car was a white Saxo 1.1. Corsa c are decent as are fiestas. Focus / megane may also be an option? Astra maybe?
Hollism Posted 30 April 2013 Posted 30 April 2013 I passed in October and bought a 53 plate Corsa. It was brilliant until a core rod shot out and ripped a hole in the engine and destroyed it. Sold it for £300 Now got an R reg Fiesta. It's old, ugly and I hated it at first. Everyone falls in love with their first car though. I'm used to the Fiesta now and it's honestly not that bad. It definitely sounds a lot healthier! Just get what you can afford and don't worry about not liking it. Trust me, you will. Corsas and Clios are generally the best first cars, with saxos and fiesta also up there. I like the look of Seat Ibizas but I think they're a bit pricier.
