coalvillefox Posted 13 May 2013 Posted 13 May 2013 Usually after a defeat involving a debatable penalty for someone this forum is littered with criticism for the referee but not this time. Lets take a moment to give the referee some praise, 97th minute of an epic battle between two evenly matched teams, millions of pounds at stake, player goes into the area and goes down theatrically under minimal contact(see other threads for penalty/non penalty discussions) and rather than bottling it and giving nothing he in my opinion bravely points to the spot, if Knockaert had scored we would be talking about a dodgy penalty and not how we were mugged on the break. So once again id like to praise Michael Oliver for making a MASSIVE decision in awarding the penalty rightly or wrongly and not taking the easy way out and giving nothing, far too many referees these days just give nothing because of the media, players and spectator scrutiny they would receive IF they got it wrong. Your thoughts?
theessexfox Posted 13 May 2013 Posted 13 May 2013 It's not about having the balls to make a controversial decision, it's about making the right one? Surely?
ADK Posted 13 May 2013 Posted 13 May 2013 I thought it was a penalty to be honest and still think it was a penalty. Not surprised the biased sky commentry said it wasn't.
_Fatboyslow_ Posted 13 May 2013 Posted 13 May 2013 But he failed to give the handball at the start of the game ?
ThurnbyLodgeFox Posted 13 May 2013 Posted 13 May 2013 Michael Oliver is an outstanding referee, really please today.. Especially when we were suppose to have Dowd!
Leicesterpool Posted 13 May 2013 Posted 13 May 2013 I felt he was really generous to us yesterday to be honest
Fox92 Posted 13 May 2013 Posted 13 May 2013 He was referee for the first leg of Palace v Brighton and was ok. He was the referee in the Merseyside Derby last week, and referee'd that well. I thought he was ok yesterday, as well. It was a soft penalty to give, but I suppose the lad did put his arm across and as soon as you do that, whether there is contact or not, you're always giving that opportunity for the referee to give a free kick/penalty. Of course, I wished he'd never have given it now we actually missed it! They wouldn't have scored if he would have given a goalkick, all Almunia would have done is launched it forward and I believe the final whistle would have gone Oh well, nobody can see into the future, of course.
One Arm Babba Posted 13 May 2013 Posted 13 May 2013 I think it was soft, but no way an unreasonable penalty. Knocks was round him and there was contact, albeit slight.
StanSP Posted 13 May 2013 Posted 13 May 2013 It was never a penalty in a million years . Take the specs off!
Alexikokopops Posted 13 May 2013 Posted 13 May 2013 It was never a penalty in a million years . Take the specs off! That's what I was thinking Horrible dive!
The Doctor Posted 13 May 2013 Posted 13 May 2013 It was never a penalty in a million years . Take the specs off! Well, no - the arm goes on his shoulder and pulls him down. Knocky has made an absolute meal of it, but it is a foul - it's very soft, he has dived, but it is a foul.
peach0000 Posted 13 May 2013 Posted 13 May 2013 It was never a penalty in a million years . Take the specs off! It doesn't matter if its for leicester it can only be a good thing.... as i write this it has occurred to me it wasn't a good thing

Knocky has made an absolute meal of it, but it is a foul - it's very soft, he has dived, but it is a foul. It's not even a foul. Knockaert should have been booked. BUT, the opportunity presented itself and the resulting penalty should have been scored. That's another matter altogether though! The handball from one of our many corners at the start of the game SHOULD have been given by the linesman (I very much doubt the referee would have been able to see it amongst all the players in the box). Over the course of the whole match, I thought Michael Oliver did well.
Father Ted Posted 13 May 2013 Posted 13 May 2013 He was crap, should have sent Cassetti and Ekstrand both off and could have made a case to send another one of their players off first half for handball on the line from De Laet. I make that 3-1, so to those saying it was justice.. Take a long hard look in the mirror and re-assess your point in being a Leicester fan.

It's pretty much the same challenge Schlupp made on Anya that got him booked first leg.

Bizarre statement.
Father Ted Posted 13 May 2013 Posted 13 May 2013 What for? 're-assess your point in being a Leicester fan'. Bizarre statement. Cassetti - lucky to escape red for his initial tackle on James. When on a yellow he kicked the ball away (Wood got booked for this)Ekstrand - 2 footed lunge over the top of the ball through Knockaert late in the 2nd half. Leg breaker.
Vardinhio Posted 13 May 2013 Posted 13 May 2013 never a pen, did look conving though and obviously all the city fans at that end were screaming for it. Casseti was never catching him so the story added up.
Fox42 Posted 13 May 2013 Posted 13 May 2013 He was the same person that refereed the Brentford - Doncaster game. Lightning struck twice for him...
David Hankey Posted 13 May 2013 Posted 13 May 2013 If the referee had made the CORRECT decision we would not have had a penalty and probably Watford would have not gone to the other end and scored. Extra time would have ensued and who knows what might have happened.

escos Posted 13 May 2013 Posted 13 May 2013 I'm surprised more people haven't had a moan about the Ekstrand challenge. It was a disgusting two footed lunge and IMO had he not cut his head in the process would have been sent off. The penalty was a strange one, there was contact and the player went down so although soft it makes it hard for the ref not to give it.
katieakita Posted 13 May 2013 Posted 13 May 2013 Thought the lunge was a shocker an penalty was soft, similar to some awarded against us, couple against Whitbread earlier in the season.
