Is the City of Leicester a dump?

Recommended Posts

I don't understand how anyone thinks it is difficult to get into the city centre and to visit places like the silver arcade.

Park at High cross, walk through straight out the door, turn right head towards Irish and you're there.

I like what the Mayor is doing.

I like what John Mayer is doing

What's he doing... making the roads a shared space? Banning all cars from going within 200metres?

Whole thing is getting demolished and they are extending the pedestrian zone down to the entrance of castle park. They are also trying to extend the canal further towards the city center so more people will visit the city on their travels, they are also going to try and build a marina down near castle park on the other side of the bridge.

Somebody I work with has a drawing that was done about 7-8 years ago outlining all the changes they wanted to do to the city centre. The Jubilee Square is on it, which means that's been in the pipeline for a good 9 years. They've been trying to get the Holiday Inn demolished for ages. The plans actually look quite nice tbh, it's going to take years for them to finish it all though.

Drivers have been warned to expect delays around one of Leicester’s busiest junctions from Monday as work starts on the latest phase of a £1.7 million scheme to remodel it.

The city council is take out a traffic lane along the south side of St Nicholas' Circle, by Castle Gardens, and give it over to cyclist and pedestrians.

City mayor Sir Peter Soulsby says removing a traffic lane will create wider footpaths and new cycle lanes.

The work will be carried out over the next twelve weeks.

The council says some 2,000 vehicles use the junction around the Holiday Inn every hour and motorists have argued taking out a lane of traffic will add to congestion.

Sir Peter insists this is not the case.

He said: “This is a major scheme which will have huge benefits for the city.

“We have important attractions cut off from the city centre by the 1960s ring road and we want to reverse that.

“By giving back some of the road space to cyclists and walkers, and creating more attractive and safer routes, we can restore the lost links from the city centre to this fascinating and historical part of the city, and give this rather rundown part area a much needed revamp.

“Some disruption to traffic is inevitable while we carry out these improvements, but officers have taken steps to ensure that this will have minimal impact in the busy morning and evening periods.”

From Monday there will be additional lane restrictions will be in place during off-peak hours from 9.30am to 3.30pm from Monday to Friday.

Cycling groups have welcome the scheme but some drivers are concerned.

James Peters, 26, from Narborough Road, said: “I’m not sure it will encourage more cycling and walking.

“All it will do it make it harder for drivers who still need their cars to get in and out of the city centre.”

Work to create a more attractive entrance to Castle Gardens will begin in May and in July the Harvey Walk footbridge, which spans the roundabout will be taken down and replaced with a ground-level path between Holiday Inn and NCP car park.

More than 40 jobs have been created at four food outlets in a major city centre street.

American gelato parlour Whipee Gelato, Vitruvius Italian restaurant and Mr Bojangles champagne bar are three of the new outlets to open in Granby Street so far this year.

This follows the opening of a Chinese takeaway, Oodles Chinese, in December, where 10 jobs were created.

Ismail Patel, who co-owns Oodles with his brother Mohammed Umar, said: “Granby Street used to be one of the busiest roads in Leicester but it died down.

“However, because the market has picked up again, more people are spending money, which means that businesspeople like us are able to launch new places.”

Alexandra Marcu and Tony Singh, who own Vitruvius restaurant in Mountsorrel, opened the second branch of the restaurant on January 10. A total of 12 jobs have been created.

The Italian themed restaurant was opened after Alexandra and Tony, who run property company Elite Estates in London, felt that there was nowhere to entertain their guests.

Tony said: “We found there is nowhere in Leicester to take middle-aged people, especially when it comes to hosting celebrations. So we decided to open our own restaurant and champagne bar.

“We’re trying not to get the younger crowd in because they have a wide selection of different places they can go already. We’re aiming for the middle-aged customers at the moment.”

Vitruvius and Mr Bojangles have taken the former space of Spanish chain La Tasca, opposite Italian restaurant San Carlo.

Alexandra said: “We are aware of the competition but we are not concerned.”

The Mountsorrel branch of Vitruvius, which is attached to the Quarry Master Pub, came under fire from Charnwood Borough Council in December after Leicestershire police were concerned about reports of anti-social behaviour and selling of alcohol out-of-hours.

The pub subsequently had its licence removed.

Tony said: “Our first branch of Vitruvius has had a lot of bad publicity because our premises licence is attached to another business, which has had a lot of licensing issues.

“Aside from that, it is a successful restaurant, and off the back of that success, we decided to launch our second branch. The other restaurant is still open.”

Bally Pottiwal, of Southampton, and Dr Rajiv Wadhwa, of Highfields, are to open Whipee Gelato, in Granby Street, next month.

About £300,000 has been spent refitting the former Jessops store. Around 25 jobs have been created.

Bally said: “Rajiv and I are good friends and have been investing in property together for the last 10 years. We decided to open our first Whipee Gelato because of our love for traditional Italian gelato.

“We believe gelato is the next coffee-like craze. Having seen the success of how Starbucks Americanised coffee, we thought we could do the same with gelato.

“We decided to open Whipee Gelato in Leicester is because it is a thriving city.”
