St Ledger in 'shop window' at Wembley after Leicester blow

Recommended Posts

It's simple: As a Championship club and with FFP looming, one cannot simply afford to keep too many players with impending future international duties or players that are substantial to national sides on ones books.

St. Ledger is a solid, mostly reliable defender that I'd miss to a certain degree because he means stability and because he knows the club already.

He has made himself a name with his performances for the Irish national squad, but with the wages he's allegedly on, we just can't rely his services any longer.

Spot on - He's replaceable and if there's one position I'd trust NP (and his team) to find that replacement it's CB. He's a loss but not a massive one.

He wasn't that bad...

Maybe not... but when certain people tell you he's prem quality week in week out forgive people for grasping any **** up with utter glee.

If he was on £5,000 a week would there be this much vitriol against him?  I'm not sure what he's done to deserve it.  He's a decent top half Championship defender who took an opportunity to earn more money when offered.  He's been decent this season when called upon at either RB or CB and had a couple of off games (as have most players this season and if he hadn't he wouldn't be at this level).  Yes, he hoofs it too much (as again do most Championship defenders - which I HATE) but maybe he's been told to?  Trapp last night may have said to them to get it up early to Keane.

Obviously as a Leicester fan, I'd rather he was on back up wages but do we really need bash him so much?  Apart from going out on the piss a few times (and being dumb enough to get caught) he's seemed to be fairly committed when called upon.

If he stays (doubtful) and puts in some good performances and stays committed then I have no problem supporting him.

If people didn't make him out to be bloody brilliant there probably wouldn't be any.

True.

This from the Guardian:

"Sean St Ledger has spent the last few months playing central midfield for Millwall, and there was too much uncharacteristic indecision on show in that passage of play. Such sloppiness may not be a hindrance against the Faroe Islands next week..."

Sounds about right for an average Championship defender...

I don't see how a lot of people are jumping on this wage-wagon when we have no fvcking clue how much money he is on. It's all speculation, not fact.

Yeah exactly we need it straight from the horses mouth so to speak

VALUE FOR MONEY!

SSL ain't bad... But he doesn't represent value for money.. Nor does Beckford, Danns, Wellens and Gally.

This is the thing to remember.

Kasper and Nugent, also allegedly on big bucks, DO represent value for money. So keep em...

IMO this is FFP in a nutshell.

The days are going when we can retain/sign average ability for Monopoly money...

And it's the same for every Championship club.

God knows what QPR are gonna do..

Indeed Col, anyway, bitching and moaning about pure conjecture is pointless! There is obviously work in progress and I will reserve judgement until nearer the start of the season.

All players make mistakes, even the best do too, you only have to watch MotD or Sky to see the likes of Ferdinand, Terry etc to drop a howler.

I can't believe the way many have turned against one of our players.

Feck sake there must be at least 11 players on higher wages than him.

Not every player was given big money wages when they signed.

What a moaning lot we are at the Ting Tong.

There's a reason why at his age, we're the biggest team he's ever played for and we saw that reason last night.

Dogshit.

The first part of your post is true, of course. But then I suppose you could say Le Tissier only played for Southampton, and won nothing major, yet he remains one of the Premier League's greatest ever players.

I wouldn't call him 'dogsh!t' personally. I think he is solid at this level, as proved in his career; Preston made the top 6 on a regular basis when he played in their back four. Also, I recall him playing at the start of the season when we didn't seem to concede that many goals.

He made one error last night. An error that has been highlighted because it led to the England goal. Other than that, he was solid enough. He (and his three defensive partners) seemed to handle a good PL forward line.

I do personally think he is a better player than Whitbread. He isn't a old fashioned centre half (like Morgan), he is technically gifted. I think St Ledger could get into most teams in this division.

His wages might be the problem, but his attitude might be as well. He fell out with Nige, we all know that, and I've been reading that he fell out with Strachan at 'Boro which is why they didn't sign him/terminated his loan spell. Those two aspects are the only two I have issues with.

Not for the first time I agree with you Col

Defo not value for money

I don't know what players wages are of course, but this is based upon guesswork and from stuff I've read/heard.

FFP simply is about value for money.

In this case I would retain:

Kasper (he's worth it)

RDL

Morgan

Whitbread

Schlupp

Drinky

James

King

Marshall

Wood

Nugent

Waghorn

Lloyd Dyer

Conrad

I would sell/release:

SSL

Konch

Beckford

Danns

Wellens

Gally

Vardy

Futacs

These six I would look to offload ASAP... I doubt it very much they are worth paying what we are paying them.

They would be replace primarily by free agents who are better and cheaper, in terms of wages.

I think it's actually this simple and would be surprised if this wasn't exactly what Pearson is looking to do.

Agree with this other then Vardy, I'd give him another chance.

To be fair mate I'm also torn on Vardy, so I know where you are coming from. I find it difficult to fathom out that we could have spent a million on a player without seeing SOMETHING that's gonna suggest he's worth it.

I revise my retained list to keep Vardy in it.

I would not get rid of Konchesky unless we bring in an able replacement, although Schlupp has potential in that position, I don't think he is quite ready yet to be first choice LB.

Pearson and Raksriaksorn have both decided to take drastic action by telling the £20,000-a-week star to leave the club in January.

If there are 'at least 11 players' on more than £20,000 a week, then we're truly ****ed.

I agree Col (now you've kept Vardy lol)
