MC Prussian Posted 20 March 2014 Posted 20 March 2014 Players off in Salzburg. Looks as though Basel Ultras throwing cans of Red Bull at home players EDIT: back on now. Na, that was a full beer cup aimed at Salzburg's Kampl before a corner. Basel are playing without a couple of first-team regulars and manager Murat Yakin usually deploys some sort of a 4-4-1-1. The team's glory years are long gone, they're not as dominant in the national league as they used to be (lots of scrappy draws this season), the squad is an ageing one, and the former star players have either already been sold or are about to depart at the end of this campaign (Sommer going to Gladbach as the latest example). My guess is next year will be the first with Basel not winning the league in something like ten years. Salzburg have been scoring goals for fun both domestically and internationally and the guests are completely overwhelmed with all these attacking waves. 1-0 is a very flattering scoreline for Basel.
Ross-Kemp Posted 20 March 2014 Author Posted 20 March 2014 What haven't I noticed?Benfica play in Portugal.
MC Prussian Posted 20 March 2014 Posted 20 March 2014 Basel are leading Salzburg now. It's been a crazy game so far. Basel's Ajeti was lucky not to be sent off for a headbutt against Alan. That's after the guests were decimated after only nine minutes for a vicious tackle by Suchy on the very same Alan. Then Basel strike twice from corners in the second half and send it all topsy-turvy. Salzburg are playing with three strikers now, are much more prone to counterattacks and some of their players are getting really frustrated. It would be RB's first defeat in... months?
MC Prussian Posted 21 March 2014 Posted 21 March 2014 These are the quarter-final pairings: Porto - Sevilla Basel - Valencia Lyon - Juventus Alkmaar - Benfica
StanSP Posted 21 March 2014 Posted 21 March 2014 These are the quarter-final pairings: Porto - Sevilla Basel - Valencia Lyon - Juventus Alkmaar - Benfica Top tie is the best one there.
One Legged Beaver Posted 21 March 2014 Posted 21 March 2014 I'd be very surprised if Juventus don't win this to be honest.
MC Prussian Posted 26 March 2014 Posted 26 March 2014 Basel have been fined 107'000 Euro following their fans' behaviour away at Salzburg, where flares were lit in violet-white (Austria Salzburg's colours) and items thrown at Salzburg's Kampl - which prompted the German referee to postpone the match by 13 minutes. Basel will also have to play the home tie against Valencia without any spectators, as it will be a "ghost game" imposed by UEFA. In addition to that, the Swiss club has received a second "ghost game" on probation for the duration of two years. According to UEFA, the fine and the match bans are a consequence of several incidents involving FC Basel fans on the European stage in recent months and years. The club has declared it will not appeal the decision. http://www.sbs.com.au/news/article/2014/03/27/basel-punished-europa-fan-violence
MC Prussian Posted 3 April 2014 Posted 3 April 2014 Basel's Europa League ghost game against Valencia is currently proving to be a successful one. Despite the absence of fans in the stadium, the hardcore fans from the "Muttenzer Kurve" have gathered outside the St. Jakob Park. You can hear them making quite the noise on TV. Half-time scores in the first-leg matches: Porto - Sevilla 1-0 Basel - Valencia 2-0 Lyon - Juventus 0-0 Alkmaar - Benfica 0-0
MC Prussian Posted 3 April 2014 Posted 3 April 2014 Full-time scores: Porto - Sevilla 1-0 Basel - Valencia 3-0 Lyon - Juventus 0-1 Alkmaar - Benfica 0-1
Pride_Of_The_Midlands Posted 3 April 2014 Posted 3 April 2014 So all the Champions League drop-outs won. This a joke.
MC Prussian Posted 3 April 2014 Posted 3 April 2014 So all the Champions League drop-outs won. This a joke. No. It's called football.
Pride_Of_The_Midlands Posted 3 April 2014 Posted 3 April 2014 Imagine being knocked out of the under-13 competition and then joining the under-12 competition half-way through and winning it. That's what happens with the Europa League. Should not be allowed.
shen Posted 3 April 2014 Posted 3 April 2014 Staggering result for Basel... I'm very jealous of the success Swiss club football has had. Great stuff nonetheless
Grandad. Posted 3 April 2014 Posted 3 April 2014 In fairness, I also agree that Champions League sides shouldn't drop into the Europa League. Maybe make the Europa League a shorter format and straight knockout, would bring more excitement to the competition and wouldn't mean clubs league forms suffer in the process, incredible how many teams who played on a Thursday went on to lose at the weekend. I think it was Swansea who never won on the Sunday when they had played on the Thursday in the Europa League. If you weren't good enough to progress in the Champions League then you shouldn't be given a second chance of European success by being allowed in the Europa League.
Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 3 April 2014 Posted 3 April 2014 Far too many games in the Europa I think. Much better when it was straight knock out over two legs.

MC Prussian Posted 4 April 2014 Posted 4 April 2014 Staggering result for Basel... I'm very jealous of the success Swiss club football has had. Great stuff nonetheless Thanks. The return leg in Valencia will be quite an ordeal, though. Also, Basel will have to see how many of their players are going to be fit for that match - they played without a proper striker last night. Add to that a long list of injuries. Apart from Streller, there were about eight other first-team regulars not available, which makes the whole feat so far even more impressive: - Sio and Suchy banned (one game each) - Streller, Ivanov, Ajeti, Voser and Safari all injured - Callà (not eligible) I wish Danish sides would follow suit. I suppose one could compare Basel's stature with that of FC København's? Makes me wonder why the "Løverne" cannot act as the Danish equivalent and be the "puller" for the rest of the Superliga.

FCK have been the leading ship of Danish club football ever since Laudrup left Brøndby, and they're likely to remain the leading club, despite underachieving this year. No other club bar Brøndby have the infrastructure to compete in Europe. No other club have the finances that FCK do. What FC Nordsjælland did two years ago was nothing short of stupendous. They lost their whole defense the following season with Okore, Bjelland, Parkhurst and Jesper Hansen all departing. FC Midtjylland have had a great season, but if they lose their 2 or 3 best players, they will not compete for honours next season, same goes for AaB. This leaves FCK as the only real contender every year, but a dreadful first half of the season means other teams have seized on an opportunity that's not likely to happen again any time soon. Why FCK aren't competing better in Europe, I do not know. They obviously do not recruit the same kind of talent that Basel have in their ranks. Maybe it's the coaching and tactics that's inadequate. Hard to say...
