Corky Posted 29 August 2013 Posted 29 August 2013 Tottenham 3-0 up tonight, 8-0 on aggregate. Nick Knight thinks they will be confident of progressing now.
shen Posted 29 August 2013 Posted 29 August 2013 Another whole host of big teams not even making the group stages: Udinese, St. Etienne, Spartak Moscow, Stuttgart, APOEL, Feyenoord and Partizan Belgrade all out. Amazing result by tonight St Gallen (2-4 away win at Spartak) and Esbjerg (0-1 away win at St Etienne) in particular. Personally very disappointed at Nordsjaellands exit at the hands of Elfsborg. It was their former star striker Mikkel Beckmann that scored the winner too. The Swiss sides in general have really been punching above their weight. Thun also winning rather comfortably against Partizan and Grasshoppers unlucky to go out on away goals vs Fiorentina. What's happened over the past 10 years, Alex??

Thun also winning rather comfortably against Partizan and Grasshoppers unlucky to go out on away goals vs Fiorentina. What's happened over the past 10 years, Alex?? I certainly didn't predict three wins for the Swiss sides tonight, that's for sure. On paper, Fiorentina, Spartak and Partizan are all heavyweights (well, Partizan not that much anymore, but still)... All I can put it down to is the lack of match practice for the opposition. The Swiss Super League has already started a couple of weeks back and teams have had more time to "gel". When you look at the market value of Spartak and Fiorentina in particular, it's quite astonishing, really. Then again, a league restructuring and tight financial restrictions have led to a healthy and prospering league system with no apparent clubs spending beyond their means and/or being in huge amounts of debts. The Xamax case has led to a couple of groundbreaking decisions. On the other hand, I'm a bit disappointed Grasshopper didn't put up more of a fight in their home tie against Fiorentina. Otherwise, we might be looking at all four Swiss sides progressing to the next stage... Kudos to Thun and St. Gallen who came up with proper surprise results, doing their country and the UEFA coefficient proud. The question remains whether we'll be able to maintain such a high standard over the course of the next few years, keep the talent in the country and don't let it all turn out to be a temporary fluke. I do hope our local leagues keep improving and that we keep on rising up the rankings.
Finnegan Posted 30 August 2013 Posted 30 August 2013 Shen / Alex, out of interest, do either of you support a team in Denmark / Switzerland as much as Leicester? Or a little more / less than?
shen Posted 30 August 2013 Posted 30 August 2013 Shen / Alex, out of interest, do either of you support a team in Denmark / Switzerland as much as Leicester? Or a little more / less than? I don't, no. Never had an affiliation to Danish football other than the national team as I grew up abroad. I suppose I keep an eye out for AB Copenhagen (currently struggling in the second tier) as apparently my great-grandfather used to play for them and the national side.

Do you live in Denmark now?
shen Posted 30 August 2013 Posted 30 August 2013 Where were you raised? Do you live in Denmark now? Belgium, Brussels to be precise, and yes, I live in Copenhagen since 2003.
Jimothy Posted 30 August 2013 Posted 30 August 2013 WTF are Wigan doing in pot 2?! No idea. The only thing I can think is they are cup winners, and advanced automatically. Not sure why that would put them in pot 2 though, but it's the only reason I can think of.

Corky Posted 30 August 2013 Posted 30 August 2013 English Coefficient points probably helped them out, as well as the number of upsets. This is why English clubs should take this seriously, the coefficient was helped greatly by Liverpool winning the UEFA Cup in 2001, allowing us to have four European Cup places.
MC Prussian Posted 1 September 2013 Posted 1 September 2013 Shen / Alex, out of interest, do either of you support a team in Denmark / Switzerland as much as Leicester? Or a little more / less than? I support my local team (FC Schaffhausen) which is similar to LCFC in terms of league positions over the past few decades. I only live a few hundred metres away from the ground, so it's really handy to get there whenever I feel like it. They have been going through some rough years lately, the joy and thrill of top-flight football lasted for about four seasons, then they found themselves in the fourth tier two, three years later due to league restructuring (a new third division was created from scratch, including the best teams from the old third tier and the last five ones from the old Challenge League). So, in order to get back to the second division (where they'd belonged for decades), they had to get promoted twice in succession (which they did in the past two years). In essence, the joy of following my local side stems from the fact that I've seen them play in the second division for years, then in the top flight for a short spell, getting relegated back to the second division again, going through one of the worst times in their history and seeing them getting out of the mess in only two years, two great years. I've been going to matches ever since my stepdad introduced me to the club in 1993/1994, when Schaffhausen enjoyed a great cup run with all relatively unknown players - I was there when we beat FC Basel on penalties at their old ground and saw them lose to Grasshopper Zurich (managed by Christian Gross and with players like Mats Gren, Ramon Vega, current Basel coach Murat Yakin or Giovane Elber) at the old Wankdorf stadium in Berne in the final in late spring 1994:
AjcW Posted 20 February 2014 Posted 20 February 2014 It is indeed! Decent game though, end to end, both teams very direct, Konoplyanananananka looks quality but that could be because where theres a Dawson there's a chance is at centre back!
AjcW Posted 20 February 2014 Posted 20 February 2014 1-0 Dnipro 81 mins. Thoroughly deserved... What an absolute cracker this has been, love it when the Europa league churns out games like this! Konoplayananananka is an absolute beast!
Corky Posted 20 February 2014 Posted 20 February 2014 The keeper is injured clearly with a knee injury. "Nah, Clive, you can't stop the game the-aaarrree, that's not on, it's not a head injury". HE WAS INJURED, I KNOW HE'S A FORINNER BUT HE WAS INJURED

bovril Posted 20 February 2014 Posted 20 February 2014 Watching Lazio vs Ludogorets, Lazio really are gash. Cracking goal from Bezjak for Ludogorets, catch it if you can.
AjcW Posted 20 February 2014 Posted 20 February 2014 Another good game! Good old Europa League, people write this tournament off but it's been quality for three or four years now. Still remember that campaign a couple of years ago when everyone took Bilbao to their hearts!
Corky Posted 20 February 2014 Posted 20 February 2014 I was going mad mate He's going off with that injury now. "Still not having it Clive, he'll be up and running soon".

Still remember that campaign a couple of years ago when everyone took Bilbao to their hearts! I enjoy it. It's also interesting to watch clubs that are not so over-exposed.

Still remember that campaign a couple of years ago when everyone took Bilbao to their hearts! They just need to get rid of the Champions League drop-outs like Napoli.
