Neither. I've recently moved to the North West and have done some work for a sports media/travel company and dealt with clubs and agents and was just interested to find out what happens at clubs and how things change over a course of a season. Thought i would share to give a different slant on why players move on.

...in very specific and prospectively accurate details? Hmmm...

Look I'm not having a dig or making a skit. It's nice to have a bit of detail that's not normally available.

Go back 10 - 12 months. Marshall is handed the number 7 shirt as he is told that he is a first teamer for the new season. He is being talked about on sky sports as an exciting attacking player. The fans love him because of his goals and his creative play. He is called up by England and makes his debut for the under 21 team.

He returns to his club and is told to track back to provide defensive cover. His creative play suffers as a result. Knockaert scores two against Huddersfield and starts a few games and Ben is dropped as Knockaert is the next best thing (at this point Knockaert is given the freedom to attack).

Marshall and Knocky play together and the team do well (7 or 8 wins on the bounce - top 4). Then NP starts to sub one or both on 60 mins, regardless of how they are playing, or one of them starts whilst the other is on the subs bench.

When results change for the worse, NP ignores players in training or gets his staff to speak to his players or tells them that they're playing on Saturday but then without any explanation he changes his mind.

Then over the next few months NP (or his staff, or via a list on a board in the training ground) tells players that they must travel to games but then they don't make the starting line up or subs bench - this means they haven't trained that day, which is probably the second day in a row they haven't trained because they don't always train the day before a game - this causes frustration as players need (and want) to train, especially the older players.

When asked by the players if he/they can improve communication, NP ignores them or says that he will, but then ignores them anyway.

Basically players have played week in week out since they were young and suddenly they're at a club where the manager has bought them because of the way they've played at their previous club. The manager (or his staff) then change (or try to change) the way they play and coach out of them the things that made them sign them in the first place. Why buy a players for his qualities then change his playing style. If you want a defensive winger, then buy a wingback.

As a result, Performances suffer and players are dropped. The players then ask for explanations but are ignored or accused of having a bad attitude. The players have done what they are told and so can't understand what they've done wrong' especially when the manager doesn't explain the reasons to them.

Some will say that players are paid well etc etc, but how much a person is paid doesn't mean that they can cope with every situation (it just means that they are depressed in a nicer car or nicer house than you or I) and it doesn't make them immune to criticism from the terraces.

Man management is about communication or simple explanations or giving encouragement or offering guidance.

Good luck to Marshall if he goes and to others if they move on.

Spot on! Think its a real shame as when he came he had the potential to be a big player for us.

You're saying this after about 3 or 4 pages of people talking about sauces...

For what it's worth I think it's a shame Marshall is going but 1 million is a good price. I can see how what Manc-fox has said could have happened in Marshall's case, which would worry me with regards to Nigel's man management. I doubt all of it is 100% accurate info and a lot of it is just conjecture from a sporting perspective having seen how the Marshall situation has panned out. For me, it seems like Marshall has had a bad attitude but I may be wrong, how do I know what has gone on behind closed doors? Just the same as Manc-fox may not know what has gone on in reality and is just speculating like the rest of us (amongst humorous posts)

That sounds amazing. Must try that.

Does anyone know if you can buy the unique vinegar salt they use at Grimby Fisheries?

Errrm, yeah

Because it's not like every single manager, ever, coaches wide men to protect their fullback... Christ!

It's about making a team.

btw. when Knocky was repeatedly subbed for a long time last season he was dead on his feet & then he was raring to go again for the next game.. It's not like the management aren't huge believers in sports science side of things and they don't know their shit when it comes to that sort of thing.

Just heard that Ben has signed for Blackburn today on a 4 year deal n will play against Bolton at weekend. Good luck to him I say ;)I know everything!

Really? What is the air speed velocity of an unladen swallow?

So basically Marshall was asked to track back and this turned him shit?

Also, what fvcking team goes to an away game with ONLY the players who will start or be on the bench??? Of course you take other players. Christ, if these are the reasons why he's pissed off, he really is a whining little bitch.

is KFC 24 hour? it should be

No. The KFC in Corby got ram-raided a few months back after some lads arrived too late to be served.

True story!

Agree that wingers need to help defenders and it's about the team but when you change their responsibilities that much you end up with a different player than the one you signed. You can't do that then be critical of that same player when they are no longer the creative player that you originally signed. How many threads on this forum debate how creative players are having their creativity coached out of them?

What is the name of this sports media/travel company you have recently moved to for work? Its not called Blackburn Rovers by any chance is it mate?

You can do that and you can be critical.

Its not like buying a car and expecting it to fly. He's a footballer and a very talented one at that but if you are really suggesting that his talent doesnt extend to be able to track back and be an offensive, creative force too, you are full of shit.

To say, defending means it stifles his creativity is such a load of bollocks. The top talents in this game can do both without shedding a drop of period blood. If Ben Marshall really cannot cope with being asked to do 2 things on a football pitch, it saddens me greatly as he looked so exciting when he signed but if he really is that limited, goid riddance.

It's not really surprising that Marshall would want a move, after all he's a England U21 international who's currently playing games for the academy and not even making the bench. If that were me I'd be wanting to move somewhere else, it's not like he's a 33 year old on an inflated wage. He needs to get out there and play football.

Personally I think ever since Knockaert came here there hasn't really been a place for Marshall. Knockaert does everything Marshall does but he can do abit more. Marshall is almost identical to Paul Gallagher who is probably much more content to stay here and not necessarily play football.

Why is Marshall suddenly an England u21 international , he played 1 game, he would be lucky to even get into Tahiti's under 21 side now. Couldn't beat a ****ing egg!

Respect your opinion but will have to agree to disagree. See earlier posts on this thread re NP changing players for the worse, I'm not the only one with that view.

Nobody has suggested that Marshall or others cannot do both or that they might leave because they're expected to defend. My original post implies that NP no longer plays him because he is no longer the player he signed because of his coaching and that players are unhappy because of NP's poor management and communication.
