Smudge Posted 28 August 2013 Posted 28 August 2013 No seriously, I have a BSc in Economics and an MSc in Financial Economics, family who are doing very well in a trade and didn't go to uni and friends who went to uni to do a pointless degree and failed many times. But please do go on and explain why it is a load of rubbish... Jealous. My wife is going away next week... I know what I am going to eat I have a GCE in metalwork, my mum loved her silver broach. I use olive oil, brown both sides in frying pan, add a dash more oil and fry egg, pop on top of bread. Take to TV where a frosty cold beverage awaits you. Enjoy!!

But please do go on and explain why it is a load of rubbish... I mean that it's rubbish to infer from a few personal experiences that foreign workers are somehow harder working than British workers or that learning a trade is better than doing a degree. Surely your friends could have equally failed at learning a trade.

Merging Cultures Posted 28 August 2013 Posted 28 August 2013 I mean that it's rubbish to infer from a few personal experiences that foreign workers are somehow harder working than British workers or that learning a trade is better than doing a degree. Surely your friends could have equally failed at learning a trade. It's true, like Parafox, I wouldn't have let the Numpty plug in a lamp, let alone work on his boiler. Yes, he could have failed a trade, probably has. But the fact that about 3 Universities let him redo his first year degree is ridiculous. Apart from when you remember that they also have to make money, so they are promoting rubbish degree courses and letting anyone in to pay their fees. But on the whole, my experience with immigrants (my wife is Jamaican, moved to the US to study and then work (others of her family moved before her), I moved to the US and now we live in Africa) is that they move with a purpose and that is to work hard. You'll do well to find people as hardworking as my wife's family, in the UK or US. In the UK, I have met many immigrants (hey, we are from Leicester right?!) and they worked hard, enforced discipline in their kids who then went to Uni and are doing brilliant things. I've not seen the same level of discipline in myself or other non-immigrant Brits. + Neither of us have hardcore statistics, so it is always going to be down to what have you seen/experienced.
Merging Cultures Posted 28 August 2013 Posted 28 August 2013 By the way, the person in question was from a well off family. The Dad had is own business, sold it and lives in Spain now I think. The family are not rich enough to support the wally though, so he still has to work. But it isn't like he is from the 'scum' class that has been outlined here. Although his prospects, and any progeny's prospects, are rather bleak,
DANGEROUS TIGER Posted 28 August 2013 Posted 28 August 2013 They are the ones that make the headlines and give the genuine ones who are in the majority a bad name. Although someone who is my editor was talking about her neighbour and she said she is close in grassing him up. she said she has heard him outside on his phone boasting about not going to interviews. Stays at home and does nothing. Yet across the road she says there is a woman widowed and left with young children and she struggles to feed them. Cannot afford child care. So for every scrounger there are many who are doing everything they can to survive. Problem is the scroungers know what they are legally entitled to and where to go for help the others do not. These are the ones DNO try to help by giving out information as to where to go for financial help. Some are too proud to ask. For the record I repeat, I have no time for cheats rich or poor. Got a bag of Fair Trade bananas for £1 at sainsburys. I agree. There are many weeds among the flowers.
MooseBreath Posted 28 August 2013 Posted 28 August 2013 Those that come here to work have generally got very good work ethics. But I don't think you can say that means everyone from the country in question has a better work ethic than everyone in the UK. You're only ever going to see the motivated immigrants over here, because the one's who aren't motivated stay at home.
Rincewind Posted 28 August 2013 Posted 28 August 2013 I was never practical with my hands so any tradesman work was out I was not academic skilled only the top two forms could take higher grades I am not stupid but would have found it difficult to study and take in information for one subject. I know a little of everything.

MPH Posted 28 August 2013 Posted 28 August 2013 Not really, just a way of highlighting the way people make sweeping assumptions based on thier own judgemental viewpoint just because they see something in a particular context that they assume to be what is actually happening as opposed to what it might otherwise be. Taxi driver Tourette's can affect them too. You silly boy. Are you not in part basing your discussions on your own viewpoint? Even if she was getting party food, and really lets be honest, you are trying to make a point for the sake of it, the probability is very low.. but let me humor you for a minute... Even if she was getting party food, the money she spent on all that macdonalds , and like I said there were two bags of the food , she could of COOKED plenty of party food, made her own cake and probably even had enough left over for candles on the cake. :-) So the point reminds, she didn't want to cook/ make food wasted money when she could of made food cheaper and healthier. which I do believe is the point of the thread in the first place.

A lot of immigrants come here because they get paid more for doing the same job here than they do at home. If they can get money browsing facebook / standing around doing nothing, then they are just as likely to do that as British workers. I've met plenty of lazy immigrants, they come here for the £ not to show the world they can clean streets quicker than anyone else.

As an aside, I really admire the immigrants who stand out in the cold in the middle of winter washing cars for money.... I know a lot of people who would not do that as it would be too cold or two little money for a whole lot of effort. And before Parafox comes up with a ' how do you know they were immigrants' crap argument I have frequented just about everyone of them in Leicester as I love the idea of a hand car wash and like to support people who work hard...I don't think I spoke to a single one who could sting a sentence together!
Rincewind Posted 28 August 2013 Posted 28 August 2013 I don't think you'll get much sympathy to be honest. I was not looking for it. Some people are just not gifted that way. I have succeeded in other ways but it took a long while to convince myself that I was better than those who knocked me down. I can now confidently give them a two finger salute and say up yours. I hope along with the people that I work with I am able to install self confidence in those that need a boost so they can feel better about themselves and achieve their goals.

A load of friends round. Plenty of booze flowing then someone says I fancy a nugget, Someone else say no a curry another says Chinese the hostess says not to worry I'll make some nibbles and the husband says you don't have to do that love, you should take it easy, just call a taxi and go to the drive thru down the road and buy a couple of chicken buckets.and a load Big Macs.

Webbo Posted 28 August 2013 Posted 28 August 2013 Fast food has just become a substitute for what the "common as muck" have always called food. The chip pan was always on the go. Sausage egg and chips was the staple diet, close run by beans on toast, bread and dripping, bread and jam followed by jelly and cream. All washed down with raspberry cream soda from the Corona man. Having said all that, people were not so fat in those days. Too right, I was brought on on grub like that. I'm not joking when I say I was a teenager before I found out spaghetti didn't just come in tins. Friday was always crisp sandwiches. flippin' sight cheaper than McDonalds.

I still eat crisp sandwiches, absolutely love them. Smokey Bacon sandwiches.....

leicsmac Posted 28 August 2013 Posted 28 August 2013 It's the crisp choice of kings. Yup. Smokey Bacon = the connoisseurs choice. Though prawn cocktail and worcester sauce aren't half bath either.
purpleronnie Posted 28 August 2013 Posted 28 August 2013 I still eat crisp sandwiches, absolutely love them. Smokey Bacon sandwiches..... Me too, Its a rare treat thesedays though.
Parafox Posted 28 August 2013 Author Posted 28 August 2013 You silly boy. I'm not a boy, please don't patronise me. Are you not in part basing your discussions on your own viewpoint? Yes, but so are you. Even if she was getting party food, and really lets be honest, you are trying to make a point for the sake of it, No, I'm highlighting the fact taht assumptions are almost always wrong. the probability is very low.. but let me humor you for a minute...Like I said, don't patronise me Even if she was getting party food, the money she spent on all that macdonalds , and like I said there were two bags of the food , she could of COOKED plenty of party food, made her own cake and probably even had enough left over for candles on the cake. :-) For arguments sake, let's say 2 bags of McDonalds food costs what, £25? You reckon she could have bought all the ingredients to hold a party for £25? See, you're assuming it's a kid's party. So the point reminds, (I think you mean "remains") she didn't want to cook/ make food (and) wasted money when she could of (have) made food cheaper and healthier. which I do believe is the point of the thread in the first place. Yes it is. Actually I couldn't care less what she was doing going to McD's in a taxi, it's her life.

FFS, I don't go to hand car washes and yet I still know they are staffed mainly by immigrants. I don't argue for arguments sake, you know.
