Cold Callers

Brilliant idea. Unfortunately I can't do it in France, but I will recommend it to all my UK friends.

Cold calling over here is a pain in the ar$e but fortunately because of a mistake I made in registering my phone number - I didn't realise at the time that 'nom' in French means surname - I can recognise them instantly. And I just say "quelques petits minutes" (just a minute) and put the phone on the desk. They give up waiting after a five minutes or so.

Or if anyone is on GiffGaff mobile, you gain extra minutes on your monthly allowance when someone calls you so..... Just a shame giffGaff runs on the O2 network and has fook all data coverage at work.

These things really wind me up. I used to get about three a day for the bloke i bought the house off.

just tell them that the house is a rented one. They soon fook off.

I tell them I am out of work...

Got one from Three the other day. I said I don't have a Three phone he says that I have a USB internet device then goes on about special offers for customers.

I said I do not want another phone goodbye.

Anyone with young children can hand the phone to them.

I say it back,

"Are you aware of mis-sold PPI? Have you taken a credit card, bank loan or mortgage within the last 5 years?"

I thought PPI was something you got in a swimming pool.

Sorry I thought the two replies together looked good.

Could be a topic for the last hour of raDNO tomorrow. 12-4pm.I was going to post the number for anyone that wants to call in but I can't find it. It'll be on the Panj Pani radio site. We have roving reporters now who give phone in updates if they have to visit people or attend meetings.

Unfortunately they all seem to be automated now, otherwise I'd be going for the on-hold routine. Play a bit of music, "your call is important to us, please continue to hold", more music and so on - see how long before they get pissed off.

Am I the only person who's actually just polite to them?

They're only trying to earn a living, doing an utterly wank job.

I suppose it is which is why they are being advertised all the time. Not sure I could do it. I would hate to sell something to somebody that couldn;t afford it.

It takes 10 minutes for them to tell you the call is recorded etc.

I knew this would turn into a 'funny ways to deal with cold callers' thread.

Next time, I'm going to speak confused German till they give up, and then give a cheeky 'goodbye mate' as they're going.

I used to cold call businesses. Loved it, heard all kinds of abuse and if I had a pound every time I was told to "fvck off" I'd be retired on my private island by now.

I was good money and my regular clients were quality but my god it was stressful if you went through a dry patch.

One thing that amazed me was selling in the first call, (we sold expensive, luxury stuff), how I managed to talk people into giving me their credit card details ill never know. Especially with this rough Leicester accent.

Edit:

I forgot the point I was goings to make!

You can blow whistles and shout much abuse as you want but I assure you they won't care a jot. You are a number to them and that's it, once you hang up, they have moved onto the next bloke before you have even moved 3ft away from your phone. They don't care.

As for stringing them along; 1) a decent cold caller can spot a 'waster' from miles away and hang up on you first. I certainly did many times to move onto somebody who will buy from me instead and 2) whose time are you really wasting? Not the cold callers that's for sure, infact your probably doing them a favour by knocking up their average call rate/time.

If cold calling didn't work. Nobody would do it. But it does.
