rico Posted 11 September 2013 Posted 11 September 2013 More money being wasted by the Council http://www.leicestermercury.co.uk/9m-Leicester-market-upgrade-based-Covent-Garden/story-19777669-detail/story.html
Voll Blau Posted 11 September 2013 Posted 11 September 2013 Hardly a waste. Let's be the fair the market could do with a revamp. Anything that's going to make the city centre look nicer's got to be a good thing (provided they do it properly).
davieG Posted 11 September 2013 Posted 11 September 2013 Well the current building is an eyesore and makes you feel ill when you go in there and the toilets are the worst I've seen in any city in the UK.
Fox42 Posted 11 September 2013 Posted 11 September 2013 It is a bit of a dump at the moment and it needs to improve, especially since its labelled as the largest permanent market in Europe.
danny. Posted 11 September 2013 Posted 11 September 2013 looks great - leicester could do with some 'squares' they work really well in other cities
Captain... Posted 11 September 2013 Posted 11 September 2013 looks great - leicester could do with some 'squares' they work really well in other cities Agree with this, I also wish they would do more with the space outside Highcross near the cinema, it's crying out for a few tables and chairs and people relaxing.
Guest MattP Posted 11 September 2013 Posted 11 September 2013 Can't polish a turd. No point putting up something like that with the clientele you get wandering through our city.
MooseBreath Posted 11 September 2013 Posted 11 September 2013 It's a lot of public money for market retail space which has become increasingly niche. I can't see many more people going there just because it has a slightly nicer looking roof.
Captain... Posted 11 September 2013 Posted 11 September 2013 Can't polish a turd. No point putting up something like that with the clientele you get wandering through our city. Well you have to do something more to attract people, some chairs and tables, get a bit of a food market thing going down make people want to go there for some lunch, in the photo you have people sitting outside on the roof having a cafe or restaurant there would be great. They should definitely promote the better stalls, it seems a shame to have the decent fishmongers and butchers tucked away inside (which is pretty grim inside) and people outside just selling shit. There is a lot of potential for this to be very good. There is also a lot of potential to fvck it up and waste lots of money and ruin the market in the process.
Guest MattP Posted 11 September 2013 Posted 11 September 2013 If people want to do that you can go round the back of the high cross though. Its the only area of town I can bear shopping in, boss shop, lacoste, gucci then sit down for a drink in Cafe Rouge or the other one next door. In that little area you can actually forget you are in Leicester for a while. It's nice. People won't move from there to wander past places like the Market Tavern to get to the market even if it was built in gold.
DennisNedry Posted 11 September 2013 Posted 11 September 2013 Why do the council complain so much about cuts to vital services, then splash millions on pointless schemes like this?
hairy Posted 11 September 2013 Posted 11 September 2013 Looks good to me. We need something to drag us out of the Highcross area.

You can't forget where you are round there
Guest MattP Posted 11 September 2013 Posted 11 September 2013 Hugo Boss & Gucci are just as tacky as Leicester anyway. You can't forget where you are round there Just for a bit, the service is superb in Boss, if you are fairly regular you'll get a cup of tea sometimes etc and they will do everything for you, the last girl who served me was the poor lass who got her leg cut off in New York. I'm a bit concerned what part of Covent Garden that is modelled on, is that actually supposed to be the building the Punch and Judy is attached to?
purpleronnie Posted 11 September 2013 Posted 11 September 2013 Is it just me who thinks the designs are ugly?.
absolutelegend Posted 11 September 2013 Posted 11 September 2013 Looks alright to me. I'm pretty much pro any attempt at making the city a better place. Also £9m isn't a large amount in the grand scheme of things. You really don't get much for that anymore. Look how much Brums new library cost, and most of the folk there can't even read!
Smudge Posted 11 September 2013 Posted 11 September 2013 Is it just me who thinks the designs are ugly?. You're right, why are they covering up the Georgian facade?
Guest MattP Posted 11 September 2013 Posted 11 September 2013 You're right, why are they covering up the Georgian facade? Least they have got the ethnic makeup correct on that one.
Smudge Posted 11 September 2013 Posted 11 September 2013 Least they have got the ethnic makeup correct on that one. When I posted that I thought about what you might say, you never disappoint Matt
lavrentis Posted 11 September 2013 Posted 11 September 2013 Cafe Rouge is class as we'll MattP l, always received great service in there
Guest MattP Posted 11 September 2013 Posted 11 September 2013 Cafe Rouge is class as we'll MattP l, always received great service in there For a chain it's superb, they often turn into Swingers meetings after 8-9 as well.
AdamN Posted 11 September 2013 Posted 11 September 2013 Looks far better than the shitty indoor market, that's for sure.
Merging Cultures Posted 11 September 2013 Posted 11 September 2013 I'd be surprised if they managed to do that on 9m. The renders do look good though.
DANGEROUS TIGER Posted 11 September 2013 Posted 11 September 2013 Will it be as large as the current market, with it's upper levels, or am I missing something? It talks about Covent Garden, but that is just a fruit and veg market.
