marko Posted 16 October 2013 Posted 16 October 2013 Tell that to Brazil who - thanks to being limited to friendlies only - are down to 22nd. If you want a list where things are still the way they ought to be, the World Football Elo rankings will do you the world of good. http://www.eloratings.net/world.html They're 8th.
MC Prussian Posted 16 October 2013 Posted 16 October 2013 If I was you just I'd just take your seeding and run with it, no point trying to justify it in any way as no one from outside Switzerland will hold the belief it's fair or earned. I never said it was fair or earned. We might consider ourselves lucky this time around (as long as the FIFA rankings are still calculated the way they are calculated), but looking back to 2010, where we beat Spain and then lost to Chile and Honduras, no matter how much people moan about the seeding and the pots their countries are placed in, the draws and whatever - it's all a bit blurry when it comes to World Cup games these days, with "minnows" beating "giants" and whatnot.
MC Prussian Posted 16 October 2013 Posted 16 October 2013 They're 8th. Okay, they were down to 22nd in June. Apologies.
Leicesterpool Posted 16 October 2013 Posted 16 October 2013 How the actual **** are Switzerland top seed? It's going to be fixed so they can put us in a tough group!
Dan Posted 16 October 2013 Posted 16 October 2013 Where's Sepp Blatter from? Oh yeah. Makes sense in my opinion. The only possible logic. It's going to be fixed so they can put us in a tough group! You mean like last time when we were put with the footballing giants of USA, Slovenia and Algeria? Or the time before where we faced the legendary Sweden, Nigeria and Trinidad & Tobago?
Corky Posted 16 October 2013 Posted 16 October 2013 It's going to be fixed so they can put us in a tough group! We are so shit (according to many supporters) it doesn't matter who we play.
MC Prussian Posted 16 October 2013 Posted 16 October 2013 Switzerland I know. Judging by past experiences, we'll probably crumble massively next summer. We never do well playing as favorites.
Super_horns Posted 16 October 2013 Posted 16 October 2013 I know. Judging by past experiences, we'll probably crumble massively next summer. We never do well playing as favorites. Need to play Spain more often?
Uncle Albert Posted 16 October 2013 Author Posted 16 October 2013 To be the best you have to beat the best. May even do us the world of good playing against quality opposition early doors in a tournament, going into a game where we aren't favourites to win, get us out of the blocks early and perform. Look at the last World Cup, we were meant to steam roller that group and only won the one game v Slovenia 1-0, then look what happened after that, spanked 4-1. 2006 as well, beat Paraguay 1-0, took us till the 80th minute to score v Trinidad and 2-2 all with Sweden, after that we scraped through against Ecuador 1-0 and we only played well against Portugal with 10 men and losing on penalties. The two times we have been seeded 2nd in groups with a team better than ourselves we have played well in them tournaments and have actually been unfortunate in being eliminated. 2002 World Cup when we had Argentina in our second game, nobody gave us a chance and we upped our game after a laboured 1-1 draw v Sweden and beat them. Qualification was pretty much guaranteed from that win, rested players for Nigeria, then spanked Denmark 3-0 and we were unfortunate to lose 2-1 to the winners of the tournament Brazil. Also in 2004, started the tournament losing 2-1 to France late on after Beckham had missed a penalty to make it 2-0 and Gerrard messed up for Henry. After that defeat we beat Switzerland 3-0 I think and beat Croatia 4-2, went on to play Portugal should have won in 90 minutes if it wasn't for Campbell's header being wrongly disallowed and losing our player of the tournament Wayne Rooney after half an hour! Again we could of gone on to win that tournament. So being 2nd seeds isn't too much of a bad thing in my eyes, you're players are playing a bigger game much earlier on and more likely to get them at the races quicker as well. Potentially playing your first testing game in a quarter final isn't good preparation.
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 16 October 2013 Posted 16 October 2013 Euro 2004 is the one tournament I genuinely feel we'd have gone onto win deservedly had Rooney not had his ankle trampled on by Andrade.
Leicesterpool Posted 16 October 2013 Posted 16 October 2013 Euro 2004 is the one tournament I genuinely feel we'd have gone onto win deservedly had Rooney not had his ankle trampled on by Andrade. Plus didn't Sol Campbell have a goal disallowed? Personally i think world cup 2002 was England's best chance, if Seaman didn't make that error and we had just beaten Brazil then i believe we would have done it!
Guest MattP Posted 16 October 2013 Posted 16 October 2013 Euro 2004 is the one tournament I genuinely feel we'd have gone onto win deservedly had Rooney not had his ankle trampled on by Andrade. Definitely our biggest ever chance that was. Plus didn't Sol Campbell have a goal disallowed? Personally i think world cup 2002 was England's best chance, if we had just beaten Brazil then i believe we would have done it! Nope, that was Argentina. And it was rightly ruled out, someone shoved an elbow into the keepers face.

Think it was Shearer giving Roa (?) some elbow in St. Etienne.

And 2004, when he actually climbed over John Terry in the process of scoring yet the ref gave a foul for some unknown reason.
Leicesterpool Posted 16 October 2013 Posted 16 October 2013 Definitely our biggest ever chance that was. Nope, that was Argentina. And it was rightly ruled out, someone shoved an elbow into the keepers face. No actually happened twice! Argentina 98 and Portugal 04
Guest MattP Posted 16 October 2013 Posted 16 October 2013 Cheers guys, I actually don't even remember that.
Dan Posted 16 October 2013 Posted 16 October 2013 Just occurred that we could feature in the World Cup opener...
Bert Posted 16 October 2013 Posted 16 October 2013 I love the World Cup. 2, 3 games a day and for someone like me who is up til 12/1 most nights this is going to be right up my street!

Same, probably the reason I loved the World Cup in the USA so much, times are perfect. What's with the random 2am kick off in Group D though, only match of the whole tournament that kicks off at that time

Guest MattP Posted 16 October 2013 Posted 16 October 2013 Where have you found them? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014_FIFA_World_Cup#Matches All kicks off at 1, 4 or 5 or 7pm Brasil time. Then on the first Saturday they have just one random match in GROUP D kicking off at 10pm local time. (2am here) That could be a mental night couldn't it?
