davieG Posted 30 October 2013 Posted 30 October 2013 The world is facing a wine shortage, with global consumer demand already significantly outstripping supply, a report has warned. The research by America's Morgan Stanley financial services giant says demand for wine "exceeded supply by 300m cases in 2012". It describes this as "the deepest shortfall in over 40 years of records". Last year, production also dropped to its lowest levels in more than four decades. Global production has been steadily declining since its peak in 2004, when supply outweighed demand by about 600m cases. Full Report - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-24746539
Webbo Posted 30 October 2013 Posted 30 October 2013 There's plenty of whining on here . I'll get me coat.

Jon the Hat Posted 31 October 2013 Posted 31 October 2013 How terrible. A huge market waiting for supply to catch up. Nice problem to have.
StanSP Posted 31 October 2013 Posted 31 October 2013 Whine, whine, whine. That's all the world ever does! Or maybe not any more...
Zingari Posted 31 October 2013 Posted 31 October 2013 I've not read the report and I don't know much about wine , bit it's not all red and white .
Guest Posted 31 October 2013 Posted 31 October 2013 I'm surprised. France can easily up production if necessary but the prices have plummeted so much that the French are cutting back on production.
absolutelegend Posted 31 October 2013 Posted 31 October 2013 never been in tesco and thought, "wow, not much wine available today"
Guest Posted 31 October 2013 Posted 31 October 2013 There's some very decent beers out there instead though people. Have a look in the ale thread
absolutelegend Posted 31 October 2013 Posted 31 October 2013 Wish I liked wine, so refined. always makes me smile, middle class people laughing about how they drank loads of wine the previous night, like it's so much more acceptable to be drunk on wine than beers or spirits.

Oh I don't intend to get drunk, just like the idea of sipping a glass at Vinoteca whilst goading the poorly dressed.
ADK Posted 31 October 2013 Posted 31 October 2013 Not sure what the fascination with rancid fruit juice is.
Dan Posted 31 October 2013 Posted 31 October 2013 I suppose that's one good thing for the world. What a thoroughly vile invention.
lavrentis Posted 31 October 2013 Posted 31 October 2013 Don't mind wine with a light lunch in the garden, or with dinner on a summers evening
Guest MattP Posted 31 October 2013 Posted 31 October 2013 Love a wine late in the evening or with a nice steak. France will have to up it's game for once.
bovril Posted 4 November 2013 Posted 4 November 2013 Some great wines coming out of the Balkans. The days of 'Bull's Blood' are long gone (althought the Hungarian stuff is still pretty ropey). Croatia does some good dry white wines and Enira is a fantastic Bulgarian red that I've seen in M&S. I view people who dislike wine the same way I view those who don't follow a football team - with suspicion.

They're not all the same. I've also had some really nice other Hungarian reds too. All I'd say is, don't dismiss all Hungarian wine - some of it (like kermo) decent! I guess the good ones don't make it over here as there isn't much market for the eastern european stuff.

Yeah people don't tend to buy the Eastern European wine as they might not know the grape variety and, has already been mentioned here, there is an element of 'trendiness' about buying wine. People often go for the best-known wine-growing areas. I'll try to find some more of the Hungarian stuff.
