Simmo86 Posted 1 November 2013 Posted 1 November 2013 Both great players and different types of players, so judging which is better is very tough. But Scholes for me, done it year in year out at the highest level.
blueblood88 Posted 1 November 2013 Posted 1 November 2013 Gerrard no question, better finisher, better tackler, quicker, stronger, has almost carried one of the biggest clubs in Europe on his own at times.
ousefox Posted 1 November 2013 Posted 1 November 2013 I think this is a common misconception. Alonso was the orchestrator of that Liverpool team, not Gerrard. Gerrard, as great a player as he is (and he is one of the Premier League's best ever), was not and has never been a one-man team. True, he got the headlines because he was in the positions of glory. However, Alonso was the reason he was able to get the headlines as he was the player who kept the ball ticking over and played the passes through to Gerrard. Look at Liverpool's Premier League finishes: With Alonso: Alonso goes to Real Madrid: 2005: 5 2010: 7 2006: 3 2011: 6 2007: 3 2012: 8 2008: 4 2013: 7 2009: 2 In my opinion, I think that if Liverpool had Scholes rather than Alonso, they would have won the league. Those years with Alonso also happened to be when Gerrard was in his prime, Torres was firing them in, and Benitez was manager. Liverpool have had a shite team since 2010 and have only just begun to recover.
The Year Of The Fox Posted 1 November 2013 Posted 1 November 2013 PFA Team of the Year Gerrard - 7 (2000-01, 2003-04, 2004-05, 2005-06, 2006-07, 2007-08, 2008-09) Scholes - 2 (2002-03 & 2006-07) F me you love your stat don't you? I'd sooner hear what the world class players say about a player than one who gets voted for by the likes of Joey Barton and Jimmy bullard. The fact is that Gerrard is a brilliant player who stood out like balls on a bulldog due to the rest of the liverpool players (mostly) being pretty shit. Scholes was the opposite.
Corky Posted 1 November 2013 Posted 1 November 2013 PFA Team of the Year Gerrard - 7 (2000-01, 2003-04, 2004-05, 2005-06, 2006-07, 2007-08, 2008-09) Scholes - 2 (2002-03 & 2006-07) Oh, not including Honorary Degrees and BBC Sports Personality of the Year third placings in your arguments now?
kingfox Posted 1 November 2013 Posted 1 November 2013 Both shit. None of them know how to control a midfield, unlike our very own Danny Drinkwater.
Simmo86 Posted 1 November 2013 Posted 1 November 2013 Curveball Louis Saha just said Scholes was better than Zidane having played with them both!
Jimothy Posted 1 November 2013 Posted 1 November 2013 Curveball Louis Saha just said Scholes was better than Zidane having played with them both! Louis Saha isn't world class though, so we shouldn't listen to him. We should only listen to World Class players on this subject, not the Louis Saha's of this world.
Danno Posted 1 November 2013 Posted 1 November 2013 Scholes. Gerrard captaining a team to victory after AC Milan fell asleep in the second half is hardly fantastic.
Bert Posted 1 November 2013 Posted 1 November 2013 Both shit. None of them know how to control a midfield, unlike our very own Danny Drinkwater. The same Drinkwater you slated last season.
Simmo86 Posted 1 November 2013 Posted 1 November 2013 Louis Saha isn't world class though, so we shouldn't listen to him. We should only listen to World Class players on this subject, not the Louis Saha's of this world. Need to get a world class footballer on Fantasy Football Club then
kingfox Posted 1 November 2013 Posted 1 November 2013 The same Drinkwater you slated last season. Still a love/hate relationship.
I am Rod Hull Posted 1 November 2013 Posted 1 November 2013 Still a love/hate relationship. Nice to hear that you`re finally in a relationship
The Horse's Mouth Posted 1 November 2013 Posted 1 November 2013 Do we really have to do this? these are more pedantic than the Messi vs CR7 threads.
Merchant Posted 1 November 2013 Posted 1 November 2013 Gerrard every time for me. Scholes has matured brilliantly and managed to maintain such a high standard but if we're comparing them both at their prime Gerrard is the better player. I think I'd rather have Lamps than Scholes as well but that's besides the point
sdb Posted 1 November 2013 Posted 1 November 2013 Tough - Gerrard had the legs & energy but Scholes was a considerably better thinker, passer, mover. I went Scholes. Gerrard could be a bit of a headless chicken sometimes, although Scholes' tackling...
Guest ttfn Posted 1 November 2013 Posted 1 November 2013 I voted Gerrard but I wish I hadn't. Completely different players. The two of them in a midfield as part of a 3 with a more defensive-minded player would have been ridiculous. Both incredible players. I've always thought it to be a peculiarly English tragedy that Gerrard and Lampard's careers have overlapped so completely. They may not be exactly the same player in style but they occupy the same area of the pitch and are both wonderful players. If only one of them had been a more defensive character. As for Scholes, United-supporting mates of mine will eulogise about his last 3 or 4 years at the club above the earlier times. The later days when his role was to take the ball from anybody in possession and simply re-distribute it. But for me, the Scholes I will remember was the Scholes of 1997-2004 - the Scholes who had a wonderful, crafty range of passing but also chipped in with 12-20 goals a season. Long rangers, headers, tap-ins - the lot. But in my humble opinion Roy Keane was better than both of them. He was basically good at everything. Except not being a twat
Pride_Of_The_Midlands Posted 1 November 2013 Posted 1 November 2013 I understand what you're saying, but I always think of the PFA team of the year as a fashionable item (perhaps unfairly), where votes are based on trends or fashionable picks, rather than absolute ability. So on this basis, the likes of James Milner got picked in 2010 for Aston Villa because he was performing well and stood out in the Villa team. Now he's at a bigger better team in Man City, he's nowhere near getting in the PFA team of the year as he doesn't stand out or garner headlines. Another example is Xabi Alonso. I maintain that he was the brains behind the Liverpool team when he played, yet never got into the PFA team of the year, whereas Gerrard did as he got the headlines. Edit: Interestingly (and to back up my point), Gerrard has failed to make a PFA team of the year since Alonso left Liverpool in 2009. Exactly. Since he's gone to Man City he hasn't performed anywhere near the level he did for Villa in 2009-10 (mostly because he's been played out wide) and this is reflected in the fact that he has got nowhere near the PFA Team of the Year.
Pride_Of_The_Midlands Posted 1 November 2013 Posted 1 November 2013 Ask the people in the game and they'll tell you. England won't see another Scholes for a long time. PFA Team of the Year Gerrard - 7 (2000-01, 2003-04, 2004-05, 2005-06, 2006-07, 2007-08, 2008-09) Scholes - 2 (2002-03 & 2006-07)

I guess you'd sooner have Maradona over Jose Mourinho as manager of your club then.
AS78UK Posted 1 November 2013 Posted 1 November 2013 Gerrard shines in average Liverpool teams, Scholes shone in world class utd teams. Scholes everytime for me.
Pride_Of_The_Midlands Posted 1 November 2013 Posted 1 November 2013 Oh, not including Honorary Degrees and BBC Sports Personality of the Year third placings in your arguments now? No but I could include Ballon d'Or Bronze, UEFA Club Footballer of the Year, FWA footballer of the year, PFA Players' Player of the Year, UEFA Team of the Year and FIFPro World XI awards. Well not for Scholes since he has none of these. Louis Saha isn't world class though, so we shouldn't listen to him. We should only listen to World Class players on this subject, not the Louis Saha's of this world.
Soar Fox Posted 2 November 2013 Posted 2 November 2013 Are you Gerrard's dad or something? PFA Team of the Year Gerrard - 7 (2000-01, 2003-04, 2004-05, 2005-06, 2006-07, 2007-08, 2008-09) Scholes - 2 (2002-03 & 2006-07)
