inckley fox Posted 16 November 2013 Posted 16 November 2013 We always need another striker don't we? Chris Wood got 20 goals in the championship last year and has rarely played this year but he isn't good enough right? Davin Nugent has consistently got around about 15 a season for us in this division, and is well on his way to doing it again, but he isn't good enough? Our best striker so far this season, Jamie Vardy, isn't good enough? Martyn Waghorn who has always done very well under our current manager isn't good enough to be 4th choice? Garry Taylor-Fletcher doesn't deserve a chance to prove himself? Jeffrey Schlupp doesn't deserve a chance to prove himself? Being second in the league and having the 5th best attack in the league is a disaster and we have to bring someone in to fix it? We don't need anyone at all. Just like we didn't need anyone at all last year, but we still went and signed/loaned players and ended up falling to bits. For me there are other priorities, but Pearson has hinted on occasions that we may need more up front. After Fulham he highlighted the main difference in quality as being our inability to take chances; against Charlton and Forest he said we needed to learn to be more clinical. Now take the Forest game as an example. Was it principally a case of chances falling to centre backs (as with the Watford game when Wasilewski missed a couple of sitters)? No, not really. Nugent could and should have scored three or four goals. He was, ultimately, the most evident of differences between the two sides. And it's not the first time questions have been asked. You can't play someone purely for their ability to convert penalties. If you did, then we'd have Gallagher in there every week. And Nugent has offered little more than penalties until recently, when he forgot even how to do that. There is a growing case for Nugent to be dropped, and if Wood / Schlupp don't step in and do a better job than they have in recent times, a forward will be our priority. As for Waghorn / Taylor-Fletcher / Hopper: can you seriously see them leading a promotion charge for anyone anytime soon?
inckley fox Posted 16 November 2013 Posted 16 November 2013 We're talking about our fourth choice striker in the Championship, players who are better than GTF/Schlupp/Waggy are not going to be happy as fourth choice and as we've seen in the past having unhappy players at the club does nothing to help. IF we have any long term issues with Wood/Nugent/Vardy and the other three aren't cutting it then we should get someone in on loan but signing players who aren't going to get game time for the sake of it is not going to help us at all, in fact it will do the opposite. I think the problem lies with our first choice strikers right now, not our fourth choice strikers. I may well be wrong, but haven't our first choice strikers (be they Wood, Nugent or Vardy) scored just seven goals from open play in fifteen games this season? Now this isn't a problem while you are in second place but anyone with the slightest semblance of forward thinking would identify this as a potential problem. And yes, I think this would count as a 'long-term problem'. After all, Wood hasn't hit the net regularly since February, Nugent has just three or four League goals from open play since February and Vardy has yet to hit double figures from his forty odd games for the club. I don't think you can get much more long-term than that.

Cracking post this although I definitely think we need another option down the right, whether it be defensively or a winger. Signings are so over-rated. I swear some people want us to make a signing just so we get our 30 seconds of fame on $ky in January rather than what it actually does for the team.
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 16 November 2013 Posted 16 November 2013 And how many of those are long term problems? None. We're talking about our fourth choice striker in the Championship, players who are better than GTF/Schlupp/Waggy are not going to be happy as fourth choice and as we've seen in the past having unhappy players at the club does nothing to help. As said, Nugent has been off form for a while now - if you don't think it'd be nice to have the option of somebody equally as adept at this level as he is when on song then you're mad. - I didn't say we'd necessarily be entering the market for a fourth choice striker who'd get next to no minutes. What's to stop us buying better than we already have and having the refreshing option of being able to rotate from an interchangeable four up top, a selection of proper quality? Vardy and Nugent put an awful lot of running in and last season burnout was our undoing. It wouldn't hurt to have another option of proven quality - Jeff and Waghorn aren't that. I'm not stood on rooftops urging Pearson to make more signings, but I do think we need a striker and winger in January, my opinion on that hasn't changed despite the excellent start. Depends what you class as long term. Nugent and Wood have been off form since February. Quite.

And perhaps some have learnt from the second half of last season's promotion crippling form and fancy perfectly sensible, logical reinforcements in areas that could use it?
The Horse's Mouth Posted 16 November 2013 Posted 16 November 2013 No he isn't. Yes he is, he's a player Alan Young would love. Lacks any technical ability just hoofs it.

Dan Posted 21 November 2013 Posted 21 November 2013 And perhaps some have learnt from the second half of last season's promotion crippling form and fancy perfectly sensible, logical reinforcements in areas that could use it? I tend to aim that at people who go into every transfer window without fail and just list a load of the fashionable names for us to buy without us having any realistic chance of signing them. Winger would be my priority, I wouldn't turn my nose up at another forward but I stand by what I've said - the key with our attack is getting Wood in form again.
Dan Posted 21 November 2013 Posted 21 November 2013 Yes he is, he's a player Alan Young would love. Lacks any technical ability just hoofs it. Chris Burke lacks technical ability? Find that a tad harsh.
Candidcamera Posted 21 November 2013 Posted 21 November 2013 Bechio at Norwich - class at this level. Only want players who can strengthen or are better than we've got. It would be a shame to disrupt such a good start.
Ric Flair Posted 21 November 2013 Posted 21 November 2013 I see Liverpool are releasing Adam Morgan. I'm astounded as they reckoned he was a better finisher than Owen and as natural as Fowler. I'd take a punt on him.
NewburyFox Posted 21 November 2013 Posted 21 November 2013 Chris Burke lacks technical ability? Find that a tad harsh. Especially after his goal against us this season.
Foxboy Posted 21 November 2013 Posted 21 November 2013 Chuba Akpom, plays for England U19s and Arsenal reserves, he is like a little Danny Welbeck! Search him on youtube! NP would have to be stupid not to look at some of the youth players on offer!

Rob1742 Posted 22 November 2013 Posted 22 November 2013 I would still think we are battling with the Financial Fair Play demons. Any ins, would have to be accompanied by outs. The out list I would think would be SSL, Waghorn, Gallagher, Backayogu? If they we were succesful in shipping any out, then replace with similar positioned players, but probably young potentials rather than any chances to our current set up .
DANGEROUS TIGER Posted 24 November 2013 Posted 24 November 2013 A winger and striker on loan. No point buying because if we go up we will then have the money to buy quality.
MGLCFC Posted 24 November 2013 Posted 24 November 2013 Still say that is where we fell apart last season, not strengthening in Jan. Drinkwater ran out of steam, King had no impact on games, Dyer did his usual, went missing in February, Knockaert lost confidence. I'm not blaming these players, but I feel had we made a couple of quality signings in addition to Wood, we may just have got over the finishing line. So yes, I'd like to see a couple of quality players arrive in January. Preferably a right winger and a goal poacher, even Kevin Phillips for that final push wouldn't be a bad shout. Bring him on for the last 20 minutes, he can change a game. Even at 40 he's still a natural goal scorer at this level.
Simonb Posted 30 November 2013 Posted 30 November 2013 With regards to the right winger.. liam feeney? Looked good today and ive seen him a few times this season.. runs at players can cross... only decent player in a poor millwall team.. might be a good squad player but id rather knocky
Devonfox1884 Posted 30 November 2013 Posted 30 November 2013 Michail Antonio? Would be a good signing IMO. Good shout.
Happy Fox Posted 30 November 2013 Posted 30 November 2013 Prefer Odubajo from Orient a young prospect won't cost a lot of money and will be good competition for Knockaert.
