ealingfox Posted 5 February 2014 Posted 5 February 2014 If they had done that and we were promoted then yes I would have been right .... the difference is that when I'm right I wouldn't need to start threads gloating how right I was / am. It's boring. I stand by everything I say at the time. Yes, of course i do .... otherwise i wouldn't have said it. My opinion, at the time, was that we should have got rid. We played poor football, didn't seem to have any idea how to stop playing poor football and results were amongst the worst in the clubs history. My opinion now, is that clearly he has succeeded / is succeeding in his job and has become a much better manager, possibly as a result of looking at his own weaknesses from last season .... Possibly because he had the strength of conviction to know that he was always on the right path and that it needed more time. My opinion now is that we are playing beautiful football ..... the stuff that deserves to win matches and championship titles. There's no black and white in a debate this complex, but there's one thing that approaches it - The team from last season to the team a year on. So congratulations to NP for achieving that turn around. When a situation changes, change your opinion .... My opinion has been changed by NP's performance, not by the "told you so" brigade that are just irritating. Well we'll never know will we, because you were wrong.
artursteppe Posted 5 February 2014 Posted 5 February 2014 Well we'll never know will we, because you were wrong. Obviously a comment from an intellectual.
Guest Col city fan Posted 5 February 2014 Posted 5 February 2014 To be honest, reading all this today... back and forth, to and fro, it would be fascinating to see exactly what was written on certain threads during our barren spell of last season. I suspect even the most ardent fans of Pearson (yes, the 'team builders' etc etc) were possibly blowing-off somewhat following the appalling performances against Barnsley and others. Little seeds of doubt were probably starting to germinate I suspect. Let he who casteth the first stone and all that... In fact, someones who's cleverer than wot I am, put up the Barnsley post match thread and lets have a gander?
ealingfox Posted 5 February 2014 Posted 5 February 2014 Obviously a comment from an intellectual. Absolutely, and one who was right to believe in Pearson to boot.

Babylon Posted 5 February 2014 Posted 5 February 2014 Unfortunately now NP is doing fantastically well / great / spectacularly, and playing football that's not only a joy and pleasure to watch but is winning football too ..... NP's lovers during his poor run last season are absolutely right, no grey area, just plain black and white. Anyone that criticised him is now wrong, fall outs didn't happen, and he never did anything wrong. The real world is a little less simple than the foxes talk version. Hang on a minute, you can't start preaching about black and white and grey areas now. Grey areas didn't exist for you last year. You were one of the ones last season who said Pearson was the problem, he couldn't manage "star players" etc etc and that the "fall outs" were basically all his fault and bad management. At the time a lot of people, or the "Pearson lovers" as you liked to call them tried to point out that a) There was little evidence of a fall out b) even if there was how do you know the players weren't at fault and deserved to be cast aside or c) they just weren't in the team because he didn't rate them. So before you start saying stuff like "The real world is a little less simple than the foxes talk version.", trying using that in your own analysis next time.

The thing is, people seem to be focusing on the bad run. The shit that annoyed a lot people on here was probably written long before that even happened.

I've been too humble today really.
Harry - LCFC Posted 5 February 2014 Posted 5 February 2014 See Harry Redknapp, fired for finishing fourth because Chelsea won a cup!!!! One manager being sacked for finish 4th and thus meeting his objective does nothing to convince me. It just shows me there's one more person who doesn't agree with my view and what constitutes a good managerial performance. Anyway, I'd like you to answer my question instead of finding loosely related examples in an effort to avoid doing so. Is the fine line between success and failure also the difference bewteen an exemplary performance and a very poor one? Yes or no?
svensson Posted 5 February 2014 Posted 5 February 2014 Or there were a lot of people that saw promise in last season and didn't want him sacked (thus becoming a 'Pearson lover'), are now being proven that it was right. Perfectly summed up.
svensson Posted 5 February 2014 Posted 5 February 2014 Can we just all agree that those who wanted pearson sacked have no patience or foresight, they just see whats in front if them. Ohh and completly wrong.
Guest Col city fan Posted 5 February 2014 Posted 5 February 2014 Can we just all agree that those who wanted pearson sacked have no patience or foresight, they just see whats in front if them. Ohh and completly wrong. It would be more fun to go back through some threads really.
Babylon Posted 5 February 2014 Posted 5 February 2014 Nicely swerved that one Mr B.. I wasn't trying to swerve anything, I know what I said about him last year. I was reading a few old threads the other day and I was pretty torn at the end of last season and didn't know what was best. I think my parting comment after lots of uming and aring was something along the lines of, as I have always said I wanted a manager to be given time, it would be interesting to see him given that to finish the job. I've never said that Pearson was amazing, or that he'd get us promotion, I had no idea if he was capable of that. But it was clear that the promise was always there, and even after a poor end to the season, I had massively enjoyed the first two thirds with some of the best football in a long time. As I say, people are now focusing on the bad run etc. Comments about that aren't what particularly pissed me off, nobody liked that run. Waller talks about grey areas etc, well it's that which pissed me off. People had their knives out and everything was the managers fault, it was black and white for them. Played shit the season he first came back.... managers fault. "Fall out" with a player... managers fault. Young player is inconsistent... managers fault. The list goes on. And it was mostly those kind of comments that I usually defended, I rarely said "it's not Pearson's fault", more like "it might not be", or "well it could be this".
Mark_w Posted 5 February 2014 Posted 5 February 2014 Col weren't you complaining about people looking back through old threads a couple of weeks ago when it was done to prove that you're an idiot? What's changed?

Good post though.
Corky Posted 5 February 2014 Posted 5 February 2014 The main problem that Pearson fans had with you and others who questioned him was your refusal to look at the bigger picture. It's no coincidence that we thought he should be given time and he's now doing brilliantly, the majority of us could see what you refused to see. Yes there were failings, yes he made mistakes, but it was clear to any sensible person that in the long term he was the best person for the job. It is as black and white as 'we were right and you were wrong' because everything that we predicted would happen and that you poo-pooed has happened. I'm a Pearson fan and I thought he lost the plot between February and April last year, he was doing fine until that point but it wasn't just the loss of form, it was the loss of cohesion and any sort of fluent football. It was just bizarre how a team who in the first two months of the season played teams off the park could look so inept. He's come back a better manager than I thought we sit in a fabulous position, but come on Mark, could you really see this position being achieved during that spell?

Just very misguided when it came to the Pearson debate. I am interested in why you've had the change of heart (in terms of looking back at old posts) though. I always thought he'd have us in the top-six this season minimum (ended up predicting we'd finish second under him before a ball was kicked on another forum). He's a very talented manager, there was clearly something wrong at the back end of last season, but I've never doubted his ability to fix it.

I fail to believe he was sacked for failing to qualify for the CL and that it was more to do with the way he seemed to divert his attention away from Spurs as soon as the England job came up.

I was very happy to have Nige back, thought we would be succesful THIS season, but alarmed by the catastrophe of the arse end of last season. Therefore, like many, I wobbled. At least I've been honest and said so. Thats pretty much it. You seem to want to make more of it than that but I can assure you that's where Im coming from.

He is talented, I agree, which made that collapse so worrying, as it was totally unlike him. You can't knock him for anything this season- results, style, player recruitment, selection, improvement in certain players. I admire you really sticking by him during that run, I lost faith after Barnsley because it was so bad but that appears to have been the tipping point.

My annoyance with you is down, mainly, to two things. You wanted Pearson out (you said so quite clearly) yet you didn't admit it for ages this season and then when it was raked back up you refused to admit you were wrong (for quite some time). And the 'Happy Clappers' thread, the dismissal of 'Pearsonites' and your response to any post I made supporting Pearson last summer, they basically all went a long the lines of 'you won't listen to any criticism of him' even though that wasn't true. I simply thought the positives far outweighed the negatives and you basically belittled me because I was willing to defend that view. Which is fine, but you should then be willing to admit it if you're proved wrong and apologize to the people you insulted.

Happy to give Nige another go and b. Going to take it one game at a time, which I've pretty much done. Regarding people not willing to discuss last season's weaknesses. I stand by that completely. And also stand by the fact that Pearson has proved me wrong and others right. Well done to him. I'm over the moon he has done. Again, thats pretty much it unless you want to drag this out even longer?
