seenitall Posted 4 February 2014 Posted 4 February 2014 I agree with you there, however I don't believe that failing to meet your objective automatically means the manager has performed poorly. Take an extreme case - what if we had missed out by a point last season? That would be poor I take it, it being a failure of course? But if were to have that extra point that would then mean Pearson had done well over the whole season because he had succeeded? As, according to you, the only thing that matters when assessing a manager's competence is whether we succeed or fail. I don't say you're wrong here but ultimately you have to be willing to stand there and say that one point is the difference between an excellent managerial performance and a very poor one. See Harry Redknapp, fired for finishing fourth because Chelsea won a cup!!!!
deanolegend1989 Posted 5 February 2014 Posted 5 February 2014 If you genuinly think that Pearson getting 5th in 09/10 was a failure then you know absolutely nothing about football and you should take up knitting. It was a minor miracle, just like whats going on this season. Pearson has been the best manager this club has had for years and IMO if not stupidly sacked like Mackay, Laudrup, Redknapp for spurs like you mention, or many more joke sackings, then he will achieve big things with us. I think potentially as a club the size of us, we could be a 8th-12th place side consistently for years(ala Fulham until this year), maybe win a league cup and who knows possibly an FA Cup and in Europe. Perason is the manager who could get us there and I think more chance than any other manager. I guarentee no manager in world football would get us any higher than that. Top 4, Champions League football, Premiership medal, isnt going to happen..but maybe Pearson will be a failure if we finish 5th on GD in 14-15 and will get sacked because we should of got in the CL.
MC Prussian Posted 5 February 2014 Posted 5 February 2014 See Harry Redknapp, fired for finishing fourth because Chelsea won a cup!!!! It's great. That means, unless we win a cup, we can keep Pearson. Now that's some excellent news for a start.
artursteppe Posted 5 February 2014 Posted 5 February 2014 You paint a rather simplistic picture and make one particular logical, yet fatal mistake in your argumentation. It wasn't just the manager's fault we played so badly, it was also down to the players themselves who let the club and the fans down for weeks. You could also argue the management and the fans weren't proactive and/or supportive enough, either. And in all honesty, there is no "unconditional love" on here for Pearson. However, in addition to the ones who respected him from the start, there's more and more people realizing that he deserves the respect for his willingness to work harder and form an even better team. A simplistic picture so that simple minds have a chance to understand. I love the 'it was the players' fault not just the manager'. Classic tool to defend a manager who at that time was not up to the job. There is no doubt that Pearson has improved, that is, he has corrected his deficiencies since the end of last season. During our last 16 matches last season Dyer and Knocky were ( compared to this season ) both lazy. Nuge and Vardy are this season extraordinary with their defensive work and Drinky and James are the best central midfield players we have, and have been since the pre season friendly against Sunderland. Although it took Pearson a long time to realise this, the penny has now dropped. King has never been strong enough over a period to play as one of our central midfield players whilst we were using two wingers in the days when defensively there was little help from our wide men. It has taken Nige a bloody long time to realise this, but I am thankful he now does. Furthermore, and I believe most importantly, the coaching of our squad is quite extraordinary in the way a number of our players have been, and still are improving. For that I commend Pearson and his staff. You see I am capable of evaluating a situation in a fair and reasonable way. Just because someone has been inefficient, for whatever reason, does not mean they will always be the same!

Just because someone has been inefficient, for whatever reason, does not mean they will always be the same! You love it because it's the truth? You can only do so much as a manager. What happens during a match is very much in the hands/heads (and feet) of the players. And the management in general could've done better at the time, too. I'm trying to give you the bigger picture, whereas you resort to your simplistic view. Football management is not all that simple as some are still trying to make out. You claim he was not "up to the job" last season, then go on about your realization that he has learnt over the course of the past few months. Classic case of football fans not being patient enough. But I'm glad the penny has now dropped in your case.
Dan Posted 5 February 2014 Posted 5 February 2014 On we go - he has been generally very poor until this season, unable to put anything truly consistent together until this recent run - if that means he has always been great and by losing lots of games I missd his genius then I admit I did but I secretly think he has generally been a bit crap for the past few years and has finally come good - bit like my great Auntie who passed her driving test at the tenth attempt. Was she now a great driver or did she beat the odds? Absolute nonsense.
Bluetintedspecs Posted 5 February 2014 Posted 5 February 2014 Wow, we're still finding things to have a good old debate over, I actually feel that there is so much going right that a lot who have been advocates of patience and things taking time are so conditioned to defending NP that the tit for tat is an outlet. We're even getting full blown debates about over confidence and other teams results, myself included . Anyway thank fvck NP and our team are doing so well and long may it continue and let's enjoy the ride.COYB
Guest Col city fan Posted 5 February 2014 Posted 5 February 2014 The reality is that Pearson had the best chance of promotion last season, for years. It went tits-up. Who knows why? This season, since near Christmas we have been nothing short of sensational. Good. Pearson has proven his doubters (including myself last season) wrong. End of.

Babylon Posted 5 February 2014 Posted 5 February 2014 Let's just get it right. I am not anti Pearson or pro Pearson. Last season we got 12 point from a last possible 48. 24 points from those last 16 games would have seen us in the Prem now. Pearson was crap during that period. The stats for that period showed us to be the worst team in the Championship. Absolute fact! one third of the season. Now I understand that there are many of you Pearson lovers ( by that I mean unconditional love ) who want to have his babies, but the facts do not lie. He was clueless on how we could get more point during that time. Absolutely clueless. I repeat there was no team who got fewer points than us in the last 16 matches, correction, I have a feeling Bristol City may have been the only one. I was one of those who was fuming at his total ineptitude, and with full justification. This season there is no-one who appreciates the job he is doing right now, more than me! Where has anyone said anything other than that run was rubbish? Again, people aren't annoyed at anyone who thought we were poor during that run. They are annoyed at the goons or slated him well before that, never gave things a chance, backed overpaid shite players over the ones he was bringing in, blamed him for everything without knowing the facts etc.

Was she now a great driver or did she beat the odds? Well for starters, the first year he was playing with a team mostly full of players he either signed for league one, consolidation in this league, or were signed by Sven. You backed those players over Pearson who had decided they weren't good enough, then slated him for the signings he made to replace them. A large chunk of those players are currently propping up the league with Bolton.... whilst we are at the other end. With that in mind, have you ever thought that it was the best possible with what he had at the time?
blue army 1988 Posted 5 February 2014 Posted 5 February 2014 People should just get a life and move on. Whats done is done.

I (wrongly ) thought that Pearson would come in and pretty quickly get the best out of Sven's misfits. Danns, Mills, Beckford surely can't be THAT bad, I thought? I quickly realised (as I'm sure did Nige) that actually they were that bad. I genuinely believed that Pearson would take that squad by the scruff of its neck and get them promoted. How wrong I was.
ealingfox Posted 5 February 2014 Posted 5 February 2014 Top, second and the play off winner go up the rest fail - its a fact Completely ignorant of context and perspective. If Yeovil finish 21st on goal difference do you think anyone connected with their Club will consider it a failed season?

5waller5 Posted 5 February 2014 Posted 5 February 2014 I'd like to think a lot of people feel pretty stupid for the things that were said about Pearson and the mythical "fall outs" with all those great players. Unfortunately now NP is doing fantastically well / great / spectacularly, and playing football that's not only a joy and pleasure to watch but is winning football too ..... NP's lovers during his poor run last season are absolutely right, no grey area, just plain black and white. Anyone that criticised him is now wrong, fall outs didn't happen, and he never did anything wrong. The real world is a little less simple than the foxes talk version. I credit NP with more intelligence and aptitude than his biggest fans from last season it seems ..... He learnt from his mistakes and bettered himself as a manager. Fair play to him for that, that's the hardest thing of all to do. The people gloating in this thread don't credit him with that achievement ..... instead they insist that it was always the case. He thinks Harry was sacked for finishing fourth in the prem, quite sad really. That's why he was snapped up by another top prem side Where did they finish then??

Where did they finish then?? The main problem that Pearson fans had with you and others who questioned him was your refusal to look at the bigger picture. It's no coincidence that we thought he should be given time and he's now doing brilliantly, the majority of us could see what you refused to see. Yes there were failings, yes he made mistakes, but it was clear to any sensible person that in the long term he was the best person for the job. It is as black and white as 'we were right and you were wrong' because everything that we predicted would happen and that you poo-pooed has happened.

Still entirely black and white?????

Still entirely black and white????? And if they had done that, would that mean you were right about Pearson? The argument most used to support Pearson last year was that regardless of whether he was going to take us up that season or not, he was building a talented young side that could only get better if he was given time to work with it. All previous dismissals that we have made in the past decade or so, have shown that to sack him and pull apart everything he'd done was a huge risk. One that pretty obviously wasn't very sensible. Do you stand by the suggestion that Pearson should have been sacked then?

If they had done that and we were promoted then yes I would have been right .... the difference is that when I'm right I wouldn't need to start threads gloating how right I was / am. It's boring. I stand by everything I say at the time. Yes, of course i do .... otherwise i wouldn't have said it. My opinion, at the time, was that we should have got rid. We played poor football, didn't seem to have any idea how to stop playing poor football and results were amongst the worst in the clubs history. My opinion now, is that clearly he has succeeded / is succeeding in his job and has become a much better manager, possibly as a result of looking at his own weaknesses from last season .... Possibly because he had the strength of conviction to know that he was always on the right path and that it needed more time. My opinion now is that we are playing beautiful football ..... the stuff that deserves to win matches and championship titles. There's no black and white in a debate this complex, but there's one thing that approaches it - The team from last season to the team a year on. So congratulations to NP for achieving that turn around. When a situation changes, change your opinion .... My opinion has been changed by NP's performance, not by the "told you so" brigade that are just irritating.

Seemed like a slow start (3 defeats in the opening 5 games) set a tone out for the season of waiting for him to fail. I really didn't enjoy a lot of last season truth be told.

Where did they finish then?? In a 'nutshell'. I absolutely concur, but then again you always seem to have your finger on the pulse. How refreshing to have someone who can elucidate their analyses in such an accurate and concise manner. Pearson has learnt, there is no doubt. I might add also that since he has spent time watching the team from the stands his tactical appraisal is exemplary. I include not just formations, style the work required from each individual, but the one tiny thing that convinced me this season was the way he planned what was necessary to stop Derby playing. So simple, yet so effective. Derby liked to play the ball out from their goalkeeper, as many sides prefer. Derby had no plan 'B' and were stifled by Pearson's very simple design. Many clubs counteract oppositions by having their two strikers close down defenders, thereby slowing that team's progress. this only works in a temporary way. Pearson did this through Vardy and Nuge, who are superb at it, but whilst the ball was still in the goalkeepers hands Drinky and James took it in turns to run from their own half to thirty yards out, with Nuge and Vardy covering wide. Derby were bolloxed and this simple technique totally confused them. This tiny little thing was the platform for us to take total control of the game. I was impressed. Sometimes it's the little things that count, as many Nigel lovers will understand.
