Awesome songs, and as a Green Day fanboy I like to demonstrate the fantastic early stuff to people who only know the 21st century stuff which isn't as good. Mh, I think that's going too far. I've had arguments about Green Day with Dennis in another thread and this would certainly be part of mine. I would certainly consider, now, Green Day to be one of the chieftans of the pop-punk wave but at the time they released Dookie? It could essentially be an SLF covers record. Take out a few of the whiney, self-indulgent teen-angst and insert a few political rantings and it would be. Regardless how you label it, however, it's still a pretty good album with a massive lasting legacy.
The People's Hero Posted 8 February 2014 Posted 8 February 2014 Memories. Nimrod also. Grew out of it pretty early but have to say having just revisited it, it's all pretty catchy. It just seemed to matter a whole lot more back then.

A lot of BF fans get right pissed off if you call their music "punk" - apparently it's "hardcore" and strictly that… which is bizarre, seeing as the sound and look is classic punk and the lyrics are anti-establishment. I was fond of Dookie as a kid but Green Day are a million miles from punk. I imagine if anyone ever spat at a Green Day gig the band would stop playing immediately.

I had the dubious pleasure of seeing Green Day play at the Sheffield Leadmill in 1994. There was some exciting audience participation when Billie Joe whatshisface spat a massive greenie onto the ceiling above the stage, and a member of the audience then caught it in his mouth when it fell down again. Punk rock indeed
