LanguedocFox Posted 24 February 2014 Posted 24 February 2014 We're playing second division football, MON's team were in the top 10 of the PL, so there's a long way to go before we can start comparing players imo. O'Neill's team started out playing Second Division football, and only just sneaked into the final play-off spot on the last day of the season. In the play-off final against Palace, it almost went to penalties, before Steve Claridge shinned in the winner. In our first season up, although we finished ninth, it was not until the penultimate match (when we beat Sheffield Wednesday) that we felt completely safe. None of this is to criticise O'Neill's stars: but the team we have now is probably going up as champions, and you don't do that with second-rate players.
Stadt Posted 24 February 2014 Posted 24 February 2014 Moore and Morgan will be fine as a partnership, but otherwise you're about spot on.
Hungry Hungry Fox Posted 24 February 2014 Posted 24 February 2014 I'm a season ticket holder. We're playing second division football, MON's team were in the top 10 of the PL, so there's a long way to go before we can start comparing players imo. In the PL we'll need A goalie (for the bench but I do believe we could improve on Kasper) A left back At least one centre half, probably 2 as neither Morgan or Was will be good enough imo. A midfielder A wide player Probably 2 strikers. I'd keep Schmeichel, De Laet, Moore, Miquel (if we could sign him), James, Drinkwater, Knocky, Mahrez & Vardy but I don't know how regularly they'd play. It all depends on what the owners want to achieve, if they just want to survive the first season then the above may well surfice, if they mean to go for it then we'll need to spend/loan more. Konchesky may have the experience but is now too old to play regularly. Moore is too slow Was is good in the air but would struggle otherwise Dyer just isn't good enough and his pace won't scare that many teams (look what has happened in the last few games) Nugent won't reach double figures unless we get a load of penalties again. Can't see Wood making the step up Vardy has pace and will run all day for us but you need more than that in the PL. We will obviously need to strengthen but I wouldn't make wholesale changes and I think it would be unfair not to give the players that won promotion a crack at the prem Look at hull, they have added a few quality players but have retained the core of their promotion winning team
Guest MattP Posted 24 February 2014 Posted 24 February 2014 Who do you think of our current squad is good enough to play regularly in the Premier? How many would you keep and play regularly? It was the tone of what you wrote that baffled me more, almost liek you were sick of the current team. Keep and play reg? Kasper Morgan Moore James Drinks Knocky Vardy Could do a job if nothing better available. Konch Nugent De Laet Would personally be looking to bring in a striker, winger, right back and left back as first teamers if ones of sufficient quality were avaliable.. For all we say about MON's squad people were saying the same about Izzet, Claridge, Parker etc and they stepped it up in the PL, I've got no doubt a couple of these will surprise us as well.

theessexfox Posted 24 February 2014 Posted 24 February 2014 As well as a few squad players here and there, for me priorities if we went up: - Left back: Konch won't be good enough - Centre-back: Moore is fine, Morgan and Was could be okay but you'd like another - Winger - Striker or two Kasper, De Laet, Moore, James, Drinkwater, Knocky and Vardy will be good enough at least, possibly Morgan, King, Wood and Mahrez too
hackneyfox Posted 25 February 2014 Posted 25 February 2014 So you'd say Miquel is good enough for the Premier League but not Morgan? I haven't seen enough of Miquel but he's left footed and looks confident on the ball, as you'd expect from an Arsenal player. Morgan has experience and he reads a game well, he's very slow though and will get ripped a new one in the PL.
Dan Posted 25 February 2014 Posted 25 February 2014 Not one of oir current players can really be compared to the stars of the MON era, they may improve over time and reach those dizzy heights but I somehow doubt it as many will hopefully be replaced next season. Yeh, lets rip the whole side up and do a QPR. The majority of this side have nearly earned a crack in the Premier League and I hope they're given a fair go. Heskey Chris Wood? Not even close.

A decent distributor as you'd expect from an Arsenal/Spaniard player but I don't think he's a solid defender by any means. I wouldn't moan if he's signed in the summer though as he is only young.
hackneyfox Posted 25 February 2014 Posted 25 February 2014 You've said you'd keep Moore but also said he's too slow? Sorry I meant Morgan is too slow.

The majority of this side have nearly earned a crack in the Premier League and I hope they're given a fair go. Not even close. They have earned the bonus they'll get for promotion. I want us to get up and stay up, we need to be ruthless over player contracts, I don't want us keeping players on the books because they've been a good servant to the club, if they're not good enough then get rid.
hackneyfox Posted 25 February 2014 Posted 25 February 2014 Dyer and Savage sorry I just counld not help my self. Dyers much better. Savage played in the PL.

You're misunderstanding what people are saying. That isn't why people want to keep them. We've seen enough times that a stable squad can be a better option than flipping a coin on a new set of players.

I didn't believe people wanted to keep players just because they've been a good servant to the club. I'm struggling to see why Konchesky, Morgan, Was, Dyer, Nugent or Wood are deemed good enough for the PL. I hope I'm wrong and that a couple of them can make the step up but I doubt it. I don't expect that my list of players to keep will be playing regular first team football if we stay up for a second season. I appreciate all this team has done so far this season, I expect them to get promoted as champions and they'll deserve all the praise and rewards that they get when it happens.

Did you say the same about the team that won promotion under MON? Did you think any of them that were untested at the top would've been good enough? There are plenty of players currently playing in the prem that are not as good as the ones you listed
Lineker's Left Foot Posted 25 February 2014 Posted 25 February 2014 Sean St Ledger = Steve Thompson - NOT the great midfielder we had, but the defender signed from Charlton, who never kicked a ball for us, as he was always injured

Aylestone Fox Posted 25 February 2014 Posted 25 February 2014 I believe that trying to draw a comparison between todays team and MON's and especially how they would fare in the PL is kind of harsh on the current crop as the PL nowadays I would say has grown vastly stronger than it was back then, just my opinion of course. I didnt get down to watch much in those days as I was playing myself on Saturdays so my opinions do favour the current crop of players.
Sampson Posted 25 February 2014 Posted 25 February 2014 Christ, the thread was simply asking if any of the players remind you of past players (i.e. in their playing style), it wasn't saying that if they were mentioned it meant the poster thought they were automatically as good as them. I swear some people just want to start arguments on internet forums over nothing.

I agree it's difficult to draw a comparison between the current team and MoN's, only I am not so sure the Prem has grown vastly stronger now, I have always been under the impression the Prem is weaker nowadays. Back in the day ( god I feel old) Arsenal Newcastle Villa Man Utd all had stronger squads than now, there seemed to be less average sides back then, Man City are certainly stronger now, but not many others. That's my take on things.

Tough one to call I guess.
Dickov22 Posted 25 February 2014 Posted 25 February 2014 Drinkwater reminds me of Lennon but has a better range of passing than he had
