Guest MattP Posted 3 March 2014 Posted 3 March 2014 The faces of the Ukrainian troops on the front line in Perevalnoye remind me of Michael Spinks's when he was standing across the ring from Mike Tyson and knew he was a far inferior boxer.
Jon the Hat Posted 3 March 2014 Posted 3 March 2014 It is a bit alarming. You start to worry that there is an agenda going on in the background that we cannot see and which might lead to apparently illogical actions on both sides. I can understand what Putin is trying to achieve, but I am not sure I am clear on the benefits to NATO of taking Ukraine out as a buffer state and being hard up against Russia.
bovril Posted 3 March 2014 Posted 3 March 2014 You'd think we would have moved beyond all this shit, really, wouldn't you. People, ey? Wankers.
Lionator Posted 3 March 2014 Posted 3 March 2014 You'd think we would have moved beyond all this shit, really, wouldn't you. People, ey? Wankers. I still think we will, eventually. This isn't the 20th century. Russia and the US are talking all of the time and I'm pretty sure they're working for the best outcome for all three parties although there's a lot of brinkmanship involved.

We have an optimist in our midst! Unfortunatley this is a power play by NATO which has gone awry, and Russia are responding very predictably. The worry is that NATO did expect this and have a plan. I doubt it though. Not sure anyone expected this outcome of the protests in Kiev.

I think Putin is quite unhinged. I think Russia was exceptionally annoyed by the US meddling in 'their' border land. According to something I heard last week Obama told an aide "I'm quite good at killing people" when referring to drone strikes in Pakistan. All a bit nerve-racking for sure. It might not ever come to full scale 'hot war between the two sides but people in the Ukraines, Georgias and Syrias of this world will continue to get caught up in the middle, and misery will ensue.

It's at times like this that we should be thankful that the Americans didn't elect Mitt Romney.

Deucalion Posted 3 March 2014 Author Posted 3 March 2014 This has the potential to become the biggest threat to our existence since the Cuban Missile Crisis, in so far as there is potential for direct military engagement between the forces of Russia and Nato. Most Cold War conflicts were actually fought by proxies in place of the superpowers.
ADK Posted 3 March 2014 Posted 3 March 2014 I doubt it to be honest. Nato doesn't really have anything to gain.
bovril Posted 3 March 2014 Posted 3 March 2014 On the plus side, should make for some good highlights:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R1G0WJQuXHg
Guest MattP Posted 3 March 2014 Posted 3 March 2014 Let's be honest, on past form, the last thing you want to do is go into World War Three on the side of the Germans.

I'm an optimist because in my lifetime this sort of thing always seems to die down after a few weeks. North Korean crisis', South Ossetia, Syria etc. I don't come from a cold war era. I'd like to think the main players in the world are more sensible. It appears that people in the West love to sensationalise and grumble about the worst case scenario all of time (I've even seen Putin compared to Hitler for goodness sake).
The Year Of The Fox Posted 3 March 2014 Posted 3 March 2014 It means nothing that Putin and Obama talk. We did that with the Germans before '39. I've always thought Russia as a third world backwards/bent country with Putin as mad as a hatter. Litvinenko/Gay rights and probably many other things I'm missing
AlphaMaleFox Posted 3 March 2014 Posted 3 March 2014 Chris Morris â€@_ChrisMorris 30 min. Ukrainian ambassador to #EU tells me one sanction they will push for if Moscow doesn't back down is expel Russia from World Cup this summer What about WC Russia '18
Strokes Posted 3 March 2014 Posted 3 March 2014 Wtf has football got to do with this shite? If you dont behave, you're not playing huh.
Buce Posted 3 March 2014 Posted 3 March 2014 Frankly, I think there is nothing that NATO could do militarily. The European members don't have anything like the capability, and the Yanks would be far too stretched logistically. Besides, the political will is absent.
One Legged Beaver Posted 3 March 2014 Posted 3 March 2014 Thank god I've also got Swiss citizenship as well as British, can't be bothered with participating in a world war!

Korea has been divided for decades. South Ossetia, after one of the nastiest most vengeful wars of the last 30 years, was effectively annexed by Russia. Syria has been almost completely destroyed, from a secular country with an incredible history to a mess of religious and ethnic fighting, most of its cities in ruins. With all respect, I wouldn't say they have 'died down'.

The US military was built post World War II to take on Russia. It would be a battle of technology versus quantity.
Guest MattP Posted 3 March 2014 Posted 3 March 2014 Has America ever had a weaker leader in our lifetime? I can imagine Putin absolutely pissing himself when Obama gives him a call, probably leaves it on speaker while he leaves the room and takes the piss out of him. He knows they are absolutely powerless to take him on now.
Father Ted Posted 3 March 2014 Posted 3 March 2014 Jesus Christ. Feel free to move yourself to the motherland won't you. You are in dreamland but go for your life. You are the one in dreamland. Continue believing the manure that BBC pumps into your brain and believe it. It's all 100% fact you know!
ADK Posted 3 March 2014 Posted 3 March 2014 He can't be any worse than Bush on the phone. At least he probably knows where Ukraine is.
