Happy Fox Posted 14 March 2014 Posted 14 March 2014 http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2580433/Nigel-Pearson-reveals-Foxes-following-Cardiff-City-flop-Andreas-Cornelius-Leicester-City-boss-points-Jamie-Vardy-example-sign-right-players.html It was one of the signings that enraged Vincent Tan to such an extent he sacked Malky Mackay. Now the Cardiff owner has found an element of support from a surprising source in his fallout over £10million Andreas Cornelius. Nigel Pearson has revealed he was tracking the Danish striker for Leicester City but only looking to pay around £420,000 for his services. Cardiff handed over a fee potentially worth 24 times as much. After Mackay was sacked as manager, Sportsmail revealed how the 20-year-old left FC Copenhagen, where he earned £6,000 a week, to sign a five-year contract in south Wales worth £45,000 a week. +8 Expensive: Cardiff paid a club-record £7.668m for Andreas Cornelius in 2013 +8 Waste of money: Vincent Tan (pictured) was reportedly outraged at the signing of Cornelius Cardiff paid a then club-record £7.668m, possibly rising to £10.93m based on appearances. Tan believed the price was inflated and dismissed his manager partly because of it. Pearson reflected on the transfer as he spoke about Jamie Vardy, who was purchased from Fleetwood Town in 2012 for £1million, a record fee for a non-league player. The 27-year-old has scored 15 Championship goals this season to fire Leicester to the precipice of Barclays Premier League football and that business seems shrewd. Pearson said plans were already in place to secure more players this summer but admitted market demand might dictate signings – highlighting Cornelius, whose fee was widely reported as £8m. +8 Failed: Cornelius (left) made just 11 appearances for Cardiff before returning to FC Copenhagen ‘We plan for different scenarios all the time,’ said the Leicester manager. ‘You’ve got to know the markets and be ready to move on potential targets. You won’t get a lot of them. ‘You look at Cornelius who went to Cardiff, I think they paid £8m for him. We’d been following his progress for a long period of time but, in all due respect, we were thinking 500,000 euros (£420,000) might be the type of price that would be a good investment for him. 'At £8m, people’s perception of a player like that all of a sudden changes over night. 'He’s a young lad, he’s come into the English league and it’s a massive change. People will probably be less tolerant of him bedding in because of the price tag. +8 Out: Tan was outraged by a number of Malky Mackay's Cardiff signings +8 Bargain: Leicester signed Jamie Vardy (left) from Fleetwood Town in 2012 for £1million +8 Star man: Vardy has scored 15 goals in the Championship for Leicester this season 'You look at the Jamie Vardy scenario – the price is massively different so that will change your perception straight away: £1m to £8m. 'But it is a big jump up and players do need time to adjust. Sometimes the price tag that goes with a move can be a massive hindrance, or it can be a massive help.’ Pearson added: ‘A lot of our deals are undisclosed. We try and do things in a quiet way. It only gets out because other people let it out. ‘I don’t think there’s any mileage in shouting from the rooftops, “We’re spending this money or that money.†I can assure you whatever scenario we’re in next year it’s not going to change the way that we operate. Whether people like that or not I’m not really bothered.’
davieG Posted 14 March 2014 Posted 14 March 2014 Unlike Pearson to comment in a negative way re another manager considering how he likes to keep his own dealings under wraps. In spite of his ultimate success I'm sure there's many that thought 1 mill for Vardy was extremely generous andcput a lot of pressure on him.
Frost Posted 14 March 2014 Posted 14 March 2014 My view straight away was that it'd be difficult for Cornelius to join a club like Cardiff and get 10 goals in his first season in the Premiership, with a team destined to fight relegation. With so much pressure at a young age with little or no time to adjust and just one season under his belt at Kobenhavn - completely the wrong move. The money was far too good to turn down, but it was madness by Cardiff. There was little chance he would've made an instant impact. At a club like us, who knows? Pearson is one for getting the best out of young players, and him banging in 10-15 goals in a Championship season at 20 years old might've done him the world of good, with additional time to settle in the country.
5waller5 Posted 14 March 2014 Posted 14 March 2014 Very unusual for NP to comment. Good insight though!!!!!

I don't see how Nigel can be seen to be having a go at Mackay here. This is the Mail twisting the story. Nigel's point is that signing a player who makes a step up to a much higher level with a heavy price tag can be a big risk. The Cornelius situation is actually similar to the Vardy one - both are players who had done well at a lower level, signed for a fee that looked high based on the level of football they had proved themselves at, and the level they were moving to (for Vardy - the conference to the championship, for Cornelius - the Danish league to the prem). 1 million is a lot of money for a Championship club to spend on an unproven player. The difference is that Vardy/Pearson were given time to see if the risk paid off, Cornelius/Mackay were not given that luxury. It doesn't mean Cornelius is not worth 8 million - if he goes on to have a great career then Cardiff might just be regretting letting him go.
LCCFox96 Posted 14 March 2014 Posted 14 March 2014 Feel sorry for the lad Cornelius. He's been branded as the biggest flop of the season and he only played a handful of games. Tough for a young lad to take. He'll always be scarred by his Cardiff move throughout his career now.

That wasn't my main point, twisted or not he's commented on the fact that another manager paid well over the odds for a player he only valued for a minimal fee in comparison. Not saying he's wrong just that it is a negative comment re another manager something he's not known for.
lcfcsnow Posted 14 March 2014 Posted 14 March 2014 You've got no chance signing a Danish international for less than half a million.

Not saying he's wrong just that it is a negative comment re another manager something he's not known for. Agreed, it is unusual, but maybe he felt a little hard done by. Having tracked the player for so long and just to see Cardiff come in and pay a ridiculous price for him must not have been pleasant.
Fez of Mahrez Posted 14 March 2014 Posted 14 March 2014 I signed Cornelius on Football Manager and he's just broken Arthur Chandler's scoring record by scoring the winner in the Champions League final for the second consecutive year. He cost me £15.75million though...

Not saying he's wrong just that it is a negative comment re another manager something he's not known for. He's not mentioned Mackay at all, and in fact he is not commenting in a negative manner about the signing. He's noted that Cardiff paid 8 mill for Cornelius, which was much more than his valuation of the player, and then goes to say that the pressure of that fee might have adversely affected Cornelius.

Considering it was Mackay that paid that high figure compared to his valuation of the player he's clearly saying that it was way too much which is a negative comment on Mackay. I like Nige and have always been impressed by his integrity and approach to other teams and managers so this comment of his surprised me that's all. It was not intended to start a big debate it's simply my take on the situation which I'm not going to change even if people have a different view of it.
Guest Col city fan Posted 14 March 2014 Posted 14 March 2014 I kinda think there's a lot more to come from Cornelius. If Pearson had signed him, to develop him further in the Championship, he'd probably then be more ready to play in the Prem. The jump for him was probably too much too soon.
MrSpaM Posted 14 March 2014 Posted 14 March 2014 Almost as bad as paying 5 million for Matt Mills Almost...

I can't see where Pearson is making any direct comment toward Mackay - he is simply suggesting what our clubs valuation of the player might have been at the time
FoxLAD Posted 14 March 2014 Posted 14 March 2014 According to the mirror we almost signed Andreas Cornelius. http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/nigel-pearson-claims-leicester-nearly-3240794
Fez of Mahrez Posted 14 March 2014 Posted 14 March 2014 "Nearly signed" is very different to the actual Pearson quote which merely says we valued him at that figure. Some slightly hyperbolic sub-editing there.
Fox92 Posted 14 March 2014 Posted 14 March 2014 Sometimes it takes time to adapt to a different league. He's been a called a 'flop' quickly. Not that I'm saying I want him, but in Nige we trust.
