Gary Neville and Ryan Giggs are set to complete a takeover of Salford City within days in a move that may see the club renamed Salford 92 and Paul Scholes appointed manager.

M.E.N. Sport revealed last month that the pair of United legends were in talks to buy the non-league outfit last month.

We have now learned that the deal is expected to be signed off shortly – with a target of Championship football within 15 years part of an astonishing masterplan.

Scholes is already heavily involved in the project along with Phil Neville and Nicky Butt and will be part of talks next month aimed at staging first-team games at the AJ Bell stadium rather than at their Moor Lane home.

He is expected to take over as boss as they approach league status.

It is also understood that talks, to bring players from levels as high as the Conference North to the eighth-tier Evo Stik Division One North club, have taken place.

Players from Stockport County are among those thought to have been targeted as the group plan to steamroller their way through the non-league pyramid.

A number of predominantly local businessmen have already been approached for backing and presented with a prospectus from the members of United’s famous Class of 92, which brought unprecedented success to the Reds.

It is understood Scholes will speak to Salford council and Peel Holdings about a deal that would see the club play on the training pitch at the side of the stadium they own, which is currently home to Sale Sharks, Salford Red Devils and United Reserves. That potential agreement would also see a friendly played at the ground in which many of those involved could come out of retirement and put on their boots again.

The source said: “They see this as a huge project and see no reason why a city the size of Salford should not have a football league club. They are already speaking to players from leagues as high up as the Conference North with a view to signing them next year.

“They are selling them a dream, telling them they want Championship football within 15 years and that Paul Scholes will become the manager when they go full-time.

“They’re also saying that they will change the club’s name to Salford 92 – it’s staggering stuff.â€

It is thought many of the club’s current committee members will stay on in non-executive roles.

If Salford were to go full-time it is not likely to be before they reach either Conference North or Conference level.

Scholes was pictured with Neville, Giggs and Butt at Moor Lane last month.

The source added: “These lads do not fail at things and there is plenty of excitement surrounding this.â€

The proposal would be the latest joint venture between Neville, who was born in Bury and still lives in the area, and Giggs who lives in Worsley.

Butt is a coach with United’s youth set-up and has been helped out by Salford-born, Middleton-raised Scholes, while Phil Neville coaches the first team after playing under David Moyes at Everton.

Don't see the problem if the fan's are happy.

Changing the name to Salford 92 is a little ridiculous though. Show's how up themselves that group of players are, I suppose it's not much of a suprise given they've won nearly every trophy going.

Why doesn't scholes put some money into oldham instead as he's a fan. Why take such a silly project on.

This will no doubt boost the coffers in the short term, but with so many professional sides in that area of the world, what is the point really.

Or why don't they just start their own club from scratch like Beckham is doing.

It's easier to do if you're Beckham but at least he's actually creating something. I've got no problem at all with what Beckham's doing. This is ripping up a small, local club to dedicate to yourselves. It's like Izzet, Lennon, Walsh & Elliott buying Hinckley, calling it 'Hinckley 2000' and propelling it up the leagues through some uneven backing.

I'm amazed that this lot were like that.

I must be the only one who thinks this looks a good idea. Fair play to them for starting at the bottom and wanting to challenge them selves.

I agree that it's a good challenge, but we've heard all the bleating about Hull's owner wanting to change a name and how he's not a "real football man". Well, here we have two who would be considered that changing tradition and going for a gimmicky name.

If you were a fan of Salford would you want your name changed to that?

Not quite, Salford probably should have a football league team, it's a city of 250,000 odd people, and they're all from around that area. Nothing like and Irishman a Scottsman a Cockney Turk and a bloke from Wigan buying Hinckley, although with all the problems Hinckley have had I'm sure they'd be more than willing to go along with that plan.

I'm not sure, besides the silly name change which I will admit screams of self importance, why you have such a problem with it.

No problem with rich people bank rolling a club, even if the name change is a little cheesy, the only issue is that area is already saturated with football teams. How much support will they actually get? You've got two of the biggest teams in the country round the corner plus Oldham, Stockport, Burnley, Bolton, Blackburn etc. It's ok getting to the championship in 15 years, but if you have no fans it's totally unsustainable.

Don't get why it's getting people so angry.

Scholes, Neville, Giggs - they've all played the game, they were all good footballers and will know what they're doing. Way better than the standard foreign owner coming in and doing what he likes.

I agree the '1992' bit might be a bit stupid, but if this move ends up getting Salford into the football league then I'm sure the fans won't mind.

They aren't starting at the bottom at all.

Near enough, The salford fans don't seem to mind and they want it to happen. It will be a massive boost to the football club.

Or why don't they just start their own club from scratch like Beckham is doing.

I think I would go and watch them a lot more to be honest lol
