Langston Posted 27 July 2014 Posted 27 July 2014 I get why you'd turn down a deal after a players fails a medical But it's not like it's a dodgy knee or and torn hamstring, this is something he's always had and it caused him no trouble in his career thus far, and at the age of 27 he's someway through that career. Whilst it's clearly not perfect, after over a decade of playing professional football without it fairing up, you'd think they'd accept the slight risk. Antonio Puerta never had any problems with heart problems, either. It's more than a slight risk regardless of whether or not he's had previous incidents regarding it.
Jimothy Posted 27 July 2014 Posted 27 July 2014 Antonio Puerta never had any problems with heart problems, either. It's more than a slight risk regardless of whether or not he's had previous incidents regarding it. As far as I know Puerta, Foe, Muamba et al had no heart condition whatsoever and what happened to them still happened. Remy has a known condition and is obviously still able to play professional football with no ill effect. There's a risk he could collapse and die whilst playing but as two of the three named above prove, that can happen to anyone.

Jimothy Posted 27 July 2014 Posted 27 July 2014 Puerta did... Foe and Muamba didn't so my point still stands.
Langston Posted 27 July 2014 Posted 27 July 2014 Foe and Muamba didn't so my point still stands. Your point being that it doesn't represent a serious risk to sign somebody with a heart condition if they've not experienced any trouble previously? Come on now.
johnny the fox Posted 27 July 2014 Posted 27 July 2014 Remy to Liverpool is off after he failed his medical. Apparently he has some heart condition and has failed medicals in the past. Surely you'd look at the fact he done ok in his career up to now and it doesn't seem to have affected him. Think beckford has a similar condition ,its still not diagnosed yet....
Jimothy Posted 27 July 2014 Posted 27 July 2014 Your point being that it doesn't represent a serious risk to sign somebody with a heart condition if they've not experienced any trouble previously? Come on now. My point being, they are all at risk. Ulloa, Suarez, Sanchez, Shaw, Lallana. All moved for big money this summer as all at risk even though they don't have a pre-existing condition. Remy is 27 and played professional football for a decade and had no ill effect from doing so. There's just as much chance he'll collapse as there is Lallana will. As DavieG said, Wortho had a heart problem and he's still going strong.
Guest Col city fan Posted 27 July 2014 Posted 27 July 2014 Fascinated by the Remy thing. It sort of sets a precedent ie will QPR now have to resign themselves to keeping him and playing him. If so, they've got a good striker on their hands who may find it impossible to exercise his release clause. Makes you wonder why QPR signed him in the first place if he has a long standing medical condition?

It's not a major problem for him, and he's looking after himself/it's being controlled well.
Buce Posted 27 July 2014 Posted 27 July 2014 That's how we got Frankie Worthington he failed a Liverpool medical and I think it was a heart condition and he's still going strong which is good going considering his lifestyle. High blood pressure, IIRC.
Lionator Posted 27 July 2014 Posted 27 July 2014 Foe and Muamba didn't so my point still stands. They both had hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, which is caused by a genetic issue which means that their heart muscle gets too big, probably because of being elite athletes. It was only picked up after their incidents though, as a simple ECG (what is done in a medical) doesn't always show it up.

Happy Fox Posted 27 July 2014 Posted 27 July 2014 They have obviously ditched Remy as they are going to bring in a better player I imagine.
Jimothy Posted 27 July 2014 Posted 27 July 2014 Sorry.. what I meant to say was why have Liverpool not taken him, when others clearly did. Some teams are more tetchy with medicals, some clubs are realistic and others sign just about anybody. Newcastle signed Ba after he failed a medical at Stoke because of a dodgy knee, didn't work out too badly for them in the end.

The risk as far as the player is concerned isn't much different. But the probable reason Liverpool won't sign him is the potential cost - they pay £8m fee plus guaranteed wages at least £5m per year over perhaps 5 years. And if, three months down the line, he has a minor flutter and his doctor says time to retire, Liverpool are on the hook for the whole contract. Lallana and the rest will be insured against heart conditions. Who's going to insure Remy?
The Horse's Mouth Posted 27 July 2014 Posted 27 July 2014 surely they would have known about this before putting in a bid anyway, it's strange but if I were a Liverpool fan I would be relieved.
Soar Fox Posted 27 July 2014 Posted 27 July 2014 Some reports are saying Liverpool have pulled out due to Borini not wanting to leave Liverpool. Talking of failed medicals George Boyd's to Forest was a funny one.
The Horse's Mouth Posted 27 July 2014 Posted 27 July 2014 Some reports are saying Liverpool have pulled out due to Borini not wanting to leave Liverpool. That makes a lot more sense.
BoyJones Posted 27 July 2014 Posted 27 July 2014 Liverpool have got previous, they knocked back Frankie Worthington because of a supposed medical condition, which never caused a problem. Obviously turned out to be our gain, their loss! Can club doctors fail a player on purpose? Overstate the risk to suit the club? Nothing can be proven.
Countesthorpe Fox 1884 Posted 27 July 2014 Posted 27 July 2014 Liverpool Just confirmed another signing, Dejan Loveren signs from Southampton (No prizes for getting that)
Bayfox Posted 27 July 2014 Posted 27 July 2014 we have only been in the championship at the king power? Oh dear. Had a mare. Plastic.
Danno Posted 27 July 2014 Posted 27 July 2014 Kudos to Southampton, got £95 million for a bunch of mediocre players.
