Grandad. Posted 19 May 2014 Posted 19 May 2014 Would like Belgium to do well but they've gone from dark horses to potentially overrated in my view. Massively overrated for me. They're good on FIFA so people think that automatically makes them brilliant.
Beliall Posted 19 May 2014 Posted 19 May 2014 Argentina. Doubt anyone from Europe will win it this World Cup but I wouldnt mind seeing Ronaldo single handedly take Portugal all the way. More chance of that happening than messi leading Argentina in the same way.
ScouseFox Posted 19 May 2014 Posted 19 May 2014 yeah gotta say don't think it will happen but would love to see ronaldo confirm he is the best player ever to play the game by winning the world cup by himself. think he'll take them to the semis or so then come up against someone a bit too strong to play by himself, much like euro 2012.
Grandad. Posted 19 May 2014 Posted 19 May 2014 I have a funny feeling Switzerland will do it. That's my kind of wind up, fair play.
Guest ttfn Posted 19 May 2014 Posted 19 May 2014 Massively overrated for me. They're good on FIFA so people think that automatically makes them brilliant. Agree completely. A lot of very good players but: A) you can only play 11 and B) probably only Hazard, Kompany and Courtois (and even the latter two are debatable) are properly world class players. You can have all the good players you want but ultimately their first XI is not that special. Fellaini, for instance, has been roundly derided as a waste of money for Manchester United but will be a mainstay of that Belgian midfield. With Portugal potential opponents in round 2 I can see them getting knocked there. Absolutely no chance they'll win it.
ScouseFox Posted 19 May 2014 Posted 19 May 2014 tbf if ronaldo isn't on his game then portugal have 0 top class players so them vs belgium could go either way. if ronaldo steps up though it'll be routine. pretty sure i read that germany have got the toughest looking group fixtures in terms of times/heat/humidity etc so they should be royally fúcked by the time we get to the knockouts
kingfox Posted 19 May 2014 Posted 19 May 2014 Belgium have quality in all positions, and have good up and coming players, that's why people are rating them so highly. They aren't in Spain & Germany's league, but who from Europe is? They have very exciting attacking options, and more will be coming through in time, like Adnan Januzaj, Thorgan Hazard, Divock Origi, Michy Batshuayi, Maxime Lestienne & Zakaria Bakkali. While at the minute, it really depends how their defence holds up, but I think most countries would love Thibaut Courtois & Vincent Kompany in their side. While Vertonghen, Alderweireld & Vermaelen are all good defenders. They have a solid platform in midfield, even if it does include Fellaini, while Hazard, Mirallas & Lukaku are capable of giving anybody problems.
kingfox Posted 19 May 2014 Posted 19 May 2014 #footballmanagerLAD You talking to me, if so I don't play it. Shit game.
Donut Posted 19 May 2014 Posted 19 May 2014 2 outstanding candidates for me: Argentina- A nice route through the group stages into the knockouts, the conditions favouring them, serious striking firepower and a sense of being "overdue" spurring them on. Brazil- The nation spurring them on, almost expecting, a very solid defence, and Scolari's world cup winning brain. Has the standard of international football seriously dropped? This is the weakest Brazil side I remember yet I've still got a feeling they may win it. No, it hasnt.
Manwell Pablo Posted 20 May 2014 Posted 20 May 2014 if this tournament wasn't in brazil they'd not even be in the top 5 of the betting. they've got neymar (who is overrated) and that's about it. a surprisingly decent defence for them but nowhere near enough to win a world cup without a lot of luck, others not performing or some sort of host miracle. Their showing at the confeds is probably to blame for that. And to be fair it's the only time Neymar has looked anything like the player he's hyped up to be. Their midfield isn't the worst either, although I agree with you on the whole if they perform like they did last year they've got a chance.
Dan Posted 20 May 2014 Posted 20 May 2014 I have a funny feeling Switzerland will do it. This would be terrific. My sweep team. Switzerland will do well to make the quarters.
Kitchandro Posted 20 May 2014 Posted 20 May 2014 Brazil have home advantage and I think that's a big thing in world cups. FIFA will be desperate for them to do well, as they usually are with Brazil anyway. Germany should be in their prime now, and Spain have the best squad once again, it wouldn't be a surprise to see either of them win. Argies have Messi & Aguero etc of course. Brazil or Argentina for me.

Leicester supporters should know as well as any it's about the team, not star players. They've got a lot of good players and they've played some fantastic football the last couple of years.

They've got a lot of good players and they've played some fantastic football the last couple of years. they haven't played a competitive match since 2011 (unless you count the confederations cup which let's be honest nobody cares about). their friendly record is alright but does include losses to us, switzerland, mexico and draws with us, russia and chile. none of that really matters when we get down to the world cup like but i just personally can't see a team with striking options of fred, jo and neymar if he turns up winning a world cup other than the fact that it's in brazil maybe spurring them on or something.

Disagree, we'd want to win it if we were in it. Certainly a better indication than the pointless friendlies you mention. Fred might be slow but he scores goals.
lgfualol Posted 21 May 2014 Posted 21 May 2014 I still think Spain will win. Brazil or Germany if I could vote 2 more times.
LeicesterBran Posted 21 May 2014 Posted 21 May 2014 Argentina for me. Messi, is showing that he is capable at performing at the international stage. Yeah he didn't have a great season for Barcelona last season but, I believe that he shall fire his nation to World glory.
MC Prussian Posted 22 May 2014 Posted 22 May 2014 This would be terrific. My sweep team. Switzerland will do well to make the quarters. We never do well under pressure. Congrats, now you and Happy Fox have both jinxed it.
Webbo Posted 28 May 2014 Posted 28 May 2014 I've just done this prediction competition; https://g4-emea.yougov.com/vcrKF1FCgr8TWj You can win £5000. I predicted Brazil to beat Argentina in the final. Spain knocked us out in the quarters.
theessexfox Posted 28 May 2014 Posted 28 May 2014 I did it, we came third in our group and Argentina beat Brazil in the final, with Uruguay beating Portugal in the third place playoff.
