Bayfox Posted 22 May 2014 Posted 22 May 2014 Landon donovan has as many world cup goals. Five. As ronaldo 2, rvp 2 and messi 1. Combined. Stole from twitter but what other random facts can ft members dig up.
Steve_Guppy_Left_Foot Posted 22 May 2014 Posted 22 May 2014 Wayne Rooney and Frank Lampard have as many goals combined as me.
Dan Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Landon Donovan won't be adding to that either as he's somehow not made USA's squad. I know this is a pretty well known one but I still think it's remarkable that in 2010 the only team in the whole thing to go unbeaten were the team ranked third lowest, in New Zealand. How many teams have gone into the World Cup as holders and then gone out in the group stage the next time in 4th place? Italy did. Here's one of my own I've thought of - has it ever happened before that two teams have played each other in consecutive world cup games? Because when Spain take on Holland in the opener in their group, it will have happened, as that was the final in 2010. Along those lines, England will play Italy in consecutive tournament games.
Grandad. Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Steven Gerrard has been England's top goalscorer at the last two World Cups.. Joint in 2010 with Defoe and Upson and on his own in 2006.
Zapp Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Since the 1990 semis we've only had 2 players who play for foreign clubs chosen for our WC squads
Beliall Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Since the 1990 semis we've only had 2 players who play for foreign clubs chosen for our WC squads Beckham and mcmananman?
Brizzle Fox Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Since the premier league started the most goals scored by a player playing in the prem at that time at a single world cup is 4. Lesson therefore is don't back a prem player to be top scorer
Fox92 Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Exactly... I've always though, and still do, to be classed as a real great a player's got to light up the major stage, the World Cup... Cruyff, Pele, Ronaldo, Mueller, Eusebio, Bergkamp, Zidane etc... Take Zidane, for example, he did it for his club, he scored goals in European and domestic Cup finals, but he did it for France as well at World Cups. Scored two goals in the 98 World Cup final. He's a true legend. There's only a few exceptions and those are Welsh/Scottish/Irish players because they never get there. Dennis Law, George Best, for instance, and probably will be saying the same about Gareth Bale. There's a difference between good and great for me.
Captain... Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Oleg Salenko, golden boot winner in '94 scoring 6 goals, despite playing for Russia and being knocked out in the group stages, scored 5 goals in one game, (a record) when Russia beat Cameroon 6-1, with Roger Milla (42) scoring for Cameroon, making him the oldest ever goal scorer at the World Cup, beating his previous record of 38 set at the previous World cup. Salenko is also the only player to win Golden boot at U-20 World Cup and Fifa World Cup. Loved that game it was worth staying up late for.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 I thought this was a thread about eating fruit jellies on the toilet - imagine my disappointment.
Bayfox Posted 23 May 2014 Author Posted 23 May 2014 We have just signed the last player to score a wc goal for england.
Beliall Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Becks and Hargreaves Ah yes I forgot about hargreaves. Seems obvious now.
Stadt Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 I can remember a lot of people moaning about Hargreaves inclusion in the squad and I defended him because I had his sticker and then he went on to be player if the tournament. Wasn't he the only one that scored his penalty? Or did someone else score but had to retake?

Hargreaves won England player of the year that year I think.

It's a shame that he was so injury prone because he was a good player and probably would have gone to win quite a few more caps.
StanSP Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Lampard has had the most shots at a World Cup without scoring.
ScouseFox Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Lampard has had the most shots at a World Cup without scoring. ever? impressive if that's true.
Stadt Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 ever? impressive if that's true.Well it's not a stat to be proud of
Jam Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Landon Donovan won't be adding to that either as he's somehow not made USA's squad. That is crazy. I heard he's had a bad season but to be ommited from the squad. He's always been one of their best performers in tournaments.
Donut Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Cafu has played in 3 successive world cup final matches. He came out on the winning side for Brazil on penalties in USA 94 after a 0-0 draw with Italy, and in 2002 in Japan/South Korea when Brazil beat Germany. In 98, France beat Brazil 3-0 in the final.
Dan Posted 25 May 2014 Posted 25 May 2014 Lampard has had the most shots at a World Cup without scoring. Whilst the record books suggest otherwise, from a technical point of view it isn't true. I still can't believe that decision. It's so, so bad it makes me suspect something iffy.

No matter how badly the ref ****ed up, if it isn't given, it's not a goal.Iffy? Just crap refereeing - no different to hurst stealing a goal in '66
