Upson Signed - Confirmed

It's one thing the Thais bragging about 180 million quid etc,etc but when you shop in Poundland you get a lot of crap for your money. Last time we played in the premier league we signed in excess of eleven players all were past it, or on their sell by last legs date. Only one of them turned out to be a good buy and we got him on a free was Les Ferdinand. He won, player of the season that year and scored 12 goals. Go on Matt Upson prove me wrong? He wasn't good enough for Stoke that's how Brighton got him in the first place. Stoke were in the premiership Brighton Championship. Early days admittedly, I am positive re the Albrighton signing, if it happens, good player always gives 100%. I just hope as others have alluded too we cannot sign anyone until after 1st July I just hope we start shopping in places whereby we stand a chance of staying in the premier league.

Just spotted that not only did he get player of the year for Brighton he also got in the championship team of the year.... not to shabby

Don't care, I'll say what I like.

Well you won't listen to reason so what's the point?

Pointless posters who state their opinion and then just shove their fingers in their ears when someone counters their point.

Chin Upson

lol Amazing.

Solid business. Experience, cover, heading ability, leadership and intelligence all for free and what I imagine are fairly low (in relative terms) Premier League wages.

Anyone criticising this acquisition needs their fingers chopping off so that we don't have to read such drivel. How hard is it to understand that at the very worst (assuming we make no further defensive signings - very unlikely) we will now be going into our first Premier League season back with Upson, Wasyl, Moore and Wes at centre back? Other sides we will be competing with will be scrambling around, panic buying frantically at inflated prices whilst King Nige sits back smoking a Cuban comfortable in the knowledge that he doesn't have to be ripped off in the jumble sale that is August. All by 23 May.

Is pace really that important? I'd rather have a defender that can position himself correctly, use his strength and his brain. Sorry but this whole pace thing is getting annoying now. We seem to judge most new signings and current fringe players on two criteria: How quick are they and how old are they. Would having a defender with a bit more pace actually make any difference against players like Van Persie, Suarez and Aguero?

Some of the best defenders in the league lack pace: Terry, Mertesacker, Demichelis, even Kompany isn't the quickest.

As for age, just check out the great seasons that Distin (36) and Gabbidon (34) have had.

Your forgetting the third point in the criteria, how good are they on FIFA?

I can remember years back when we played 3rd division Brighton in the cup, Joachim was going to tear the pedestrian and ageing Steve foster apart, unfortunately foster had experience and now-how and as a result marked Joachim out the game.

Two seasons ago when we collapsed it was obvious we needed experience, last summer Nigel added experience to the team. This year we will need experience in the squad, Upson gives us that. He won't play every game, probably won't play many at all but when we're 1-0 up away at somewhere like west ham and they're throwing everything at us, having that experience to come on and sure the defence up could be invaluable just has the use of GTF, Philips and Hammond have done this season.

Pearson was a capable centre-back himself so I'm quite sure he's better qualified than anyone on here to judge whether Upson will be an asset or not.

It seems we're buying virtually risk-free capability without exhausting our funds. I've long had faith in youth and that includes Liam Moore but that doesn't close my eyes to the need for first-hand knowledge/experience and there's no question Upson has both in abundance.

I also like the Barmby signing cos there's a lot of potential upside there and with Marc Albrighton also seemingly on board I can't help but be encouraged by our progress so far.   .
