Upson Signed - Confirmed

Rather have a classy LB at the moment.

I'm sure if there were any going around free then Pearson would have snapped them up, we'll probably have to wait until the transfer window opens before we start doing big business. At the moment we are picking up frees as that is all that is on the market, this is will not be our transfer policy when the window actually opens.

He's a year older now, and it was a Championship defense.

It's an odd signing, I honestly don't think he improves on what we have, he's not the worst center back in the world though.

The season only finished a few days ago for him, he suddenly doesn't become a year older in a week. You have to be pretty good fit at his age to start almost every single game for your club.

What we had was SSL and Miquel... then the other three who are still here. So he is easily better than SSL as he's a permanent crock.

A good signing 'if' he is surrounded by some pace..  Schlupp and De Laet are 'probably' two of the fastest full backs around.  He will add experience and organization, which is no bad thing.  Another experienced, but younger and faster defender would make me personally, feel more comfortable with this signing.

In Nige' we trust.

Albrighton, Upton, this is the dross we are bringing in.

I've heard a few other players we are in for none top level either.

lol

Last time I checked, Upson had played close to 300 games in the Premier League alone and Albrighton was rumoured to have actually featured for Aston Villa in six Premiership seasons, scoring a couple and assisting on a few in the process.

If that's "dross" to you, then I dread to think what "average" means to you.

cuddly ken - priceless as always.

Ditto, going into the season with those 4 I would not be keen on... them and someone as you say younger and quicker, definitely I'm more than happy with.

A little fun fact about him; He's the most recent player to score for England in a World Cup to date.

I'd prefer to forget about Upson's performance in that game.

The experience could be vital, but let's get realistic now, same with Wasilewski, can you imagine if they have to play against the likes of Sturridge, Suarez, Giroud, Aguero etc... they will more than likely get terrorised.

Matt Upson is too old, don't think he could manage very well in the Premier League anymore, Championship defender at best.

I hope we never line up with:

Wasilewski --- Morgan --- Upson --- Konchesky

His wiki picture lol

Surely only signed to be a squad player starting the odd game but usually always on the bench like GTF but at the back.

Not going to get anyone excited but could be a good little bit of business

I don't think we will be able to sign anyone that won't get terrorised by some of the best attackers in the world, but when we face West Ham and Andy Carrol, or Stoke and Peter Crouch, you know the teams we want to beat, I would be very happy to have Upson in the team.

FFS what do people actually expect

He's made 294 appearances in the Premier League. 294 than all the other Centre Backs at the club.

Brings bags of experience into a squad which doesn't have much top level experience whilst also still being a good asset to have, I mean he was Brighton player of the year last year in the tightest defence in the Championship.

A little underwhelming for some but I'm more than happy with a signing like this on a free.

Vastly experienced in terms of the Premier League, played nearly all of his games last season, voted player of the year and free? What's not to like about that :)

Just as mozartfox and Babs say, get a younger, quicker player in and I'll be happy with our defence. Nigel is playing the free transfer market well so far.

Thinking this is a bit like the KP signing a bit of a playing/coach sort of roll or at least a squad player who has been there before to help the younger blokes out.

Let's hope we don't have konchesky, Wasyl and upson in our defence at one time.

As been said, I think the relevance and success of this signing will depend on who else we sign.

I hope there will be a 5th centre back but I'm not totally convinced there will be.

Oh no! We have signed someone that won player of the season for their old club and someone with loads of prem experience! What are we going to do!? Pearson l out I say! What a disaster!

The last player to score for England at a World Cup.

Pointless fact

Last player to score for Ireland at the Euros was Sean St Ledger...

Pointless fact

Anyway, his age is irrelevant. Anyone trying to justify the signing by saying things like "I just think he's past it", need to check out last season. He was immense.

As for Liam Moore, this may be an unpopular opinion but he's not as good as we all make out. He's one of our own. I think it's fair to say we have a natural bias. He's got great potential but he's not ready to start in the Prem yet.

I've also seen a lot of people saying that now we need to sign a CM. I don't think so! Central Midfield is our strongest area IMO

Many on here, I guess, will make an argument for signing Matt Upson. Experience, leadership, coaching etc.. and this will all be valid .

However... I must confess my first reaction was Upson!? What? lol

I don't suppose it will do us any harm and may do some good. And it's on a free.

And I think it will herald the signing of some other, more exciting players.

You did see the who "would you sign thread" full of people wanting Lescott, Richards, Hernandez etc. You know players wanting about 60/80k a week.

Think of it this way Col, SSL/Whitbread out Upson in, massive improvement on our fifth choice centre back, now we just need to replace Miquel, with a young fast ball playing centre back, and we have our Centre backs sorted for the coming season.
