JJS84 Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 anyone thought that they may sign Miquel send him out on loan for a season and he will come back into the fold next summer when upson's and was's contract run out. just a thought, probably to much like a good idea.
Dan Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 The experience could be vital, but let's get realistic now, same with Wasilewski, can you imagine if they have to play against the likes of Sturridge, Suarez, Giroud, Aguero etc... they will more than likely get terrorised. Matt Upson is too old, don't think he could manage very well in the Premier League anymore, Championship defender at best. So would pretty much any defender we can realistically sign ahead of this season.
Jam Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 We were weak from set plays last season, Upson in the air is unbeatable. I'm sure he will be of use. Happy with the signing.
AdamN Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 To all the people moaning about age, and therefore pace, tell me, does that also mean that you'd like to see Morgan, Moore and Wasilewski all shipped out? I wouldn't fancy any of them in a footrace against Raheem Sterling or Theo Walcott, but then that's not why they're in the team, is it? I must have missed the memo about the most important quality of a centre back being the ability to run really fast...
the_enlightened_one Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 If we don't sign a centre half that is not ancient and actually good enough for the Premier League then I'm afraid we are flirting with relegation before the season has even started. I'm worried sick to be quite honest. Upson wasn't even very good in his prime. Disappointed.

I wouldn't fancy any of them in a footrace against Raheem Sterling or Theo Walcott, They're already here though.
pazzerfox Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Providing he can stay fit, he could be the signing of the summer. Currently, a lot of our players have never even kicked a ball in the Premiership. Konchesky is about the only one with a few games under his belt. Nugent and Kasper have played a handful of times. This man could be key as to whether we stay up or go down in my opinion.

I'm worried sick to be quite honest. Upson wasn't even very good in his prime. Disappointed.Being very good and good enough for survival are two very different things.

I'm worried sick to be quite honest. Upson wasn't even very good in his prime. Disappointed.I'm sorry but this is fvcking unreal. You're worried sick that we've signed one player off the back of amassing 102 points with our current first team? We haven't turned shit because of one signing for Christ sake.
m00nie Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 dont really get it myself beast defense in the CHAMPIONSHIP. but were premier league now bag of experience, but if hes a squad, bit part player are we really going to benefit from it, i imagine survival is the target this season but what happens next year if we do survive, he will be another year older and we will be back to square one. guessing NP has his reasons and he proved me wrong last season so il stick with him.
LC/FC Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Another Selano, Berner, Powell, Phillips old head signing by Nige to add know how and experience to the squad. And can anyone say that Pearson has ever made a bad signing when taking in an old pro? So far, all of the above have always added quality and experience to our ranks and I believe Upson to be the same and an from interviews looks like a decent lad who will add to the squad rather than some egotistical big time charlie. This has been our model with Nigel since the beginning. We're already a solid outfit and only need minor tweaks here and there, not major surgery.
Tom17LCFC Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 More I think about it the happier I get. Am I right in saying he was Brighton's POTS last year?? Experience will prove vital as well.
Manwell Pablo Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 The season only finished a few days ago for him, he suddenly doesn't become a year older in a week. You have to be pretty good fit at his age to start almost every single game for your club. What we had was SSL and Miquel... then the other three who are still here. So he is easily better than SSL as he's a permanent crock. Yes and Brighton's season might not be over at all had a certain someone not nailed Craig Forsyth in the penalty area because they were too slow to get there. I notice you make no comment about him going up a level. I said have, not had. Hopefully he's still up to task, it is risky though.
filbertway Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Jesus christ, you can tell who the people are that take plastic Morrisons bags to games are can't you. Amazes me to see so many with a complete lack of distrust in Pearson considering what he has done with us.

LCFC31 Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Pleased with this. Good experienced centre back. Brighton's POTS, and you've got to remember Brighton conceded the least amount of goals this season (I think).
Kinowe Soorie Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Gary McAllister signed for Liverpool when he was 35...

itsaknockeart Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Not sure about 'unbeatable in the air', I'd go with OK in the air. He's only 6'1'' and not a particularly good jumper. What he does give us is quality distribution from the back, of all Championship centre backs only Richard Keogh of Derby had a higher pass completion percentage last season. I think this addresses a slightly weak area for us, Liam Moore in particular is not a very good passer.
DANGEROUS TIGER Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Oh dear. I am not happy at all with this signing. He has experience yes, but is old, and not in my view a quality player. A bad signing imo.
MooseBreath Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Lovely little signing this. We've three centre backs all with no premiership experience and we don't know how well they'll adapt. Upson gives us a dependable if unspectacular bit of strength to see us through any tough times, giving us time to make a proper experience-based assessment of where our defence is at and what long term investments need to be made. An intelligent bit of strategic squad building from nige and the boys. Hope the media are taking note after their hatchet job on us the other week.
Guest NGoloMode Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Getting rid of St Ledger and Whitbread and bringing in Upson sounds good for me. Pretty sure he won Brightons player of the season and they finished 6th. If he doesn't perform next year I'm sure Pearson won't play him.
kingfox Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Anyone we sign could suffer that fate, Liam Moore could suffer against those players. I don't see it as a relevant argument, as we play 16 other teams, unless our results against those clubs are the only ones that matter. So would pretty much any defender we can realistically sign ahead of this season. But the pace will be much different, we saw recently with Joseph Yobo for example, experienced Premier League defender struggle when he signed for Norwich. Upson has bags of experience, and yes it will be vital, and like Wasilewski he may come in handy, but when we were talking about targets when the season finished, majority said we need a centre back with pace, but signing Upson is completely the opposite. We will see, but like quite a few have said underwhelming signing.
LCFC31 Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Oh dear. I am not happy at all with this signing. He has experience yes, but is old, and not in my view a quality player. A bad signing imo. Why so much negativity? I think this is a very clever signing. He brings much needed PL experience and was one of the best defenders in the Championship last season.
