Bob Weasel Fox Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Many on here, I guess, will make an argument for signing Matt Upson. Experience, leadership, coaching etc.. and this will all be valid . However... I must confess my first reaction was Upson!? What? I don't suppose it will do us any harm and may do some good. And it's on a free. And I think it will herald the signing of some other, more exciting players. Hopefully your right Col
Captain... Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 You did see the who "would you sign thread" full of people wanting Lescott, Richards etc. You know players wanting about 60/80k a week. There is still scope for us to sign one of them, getting Upson in early and cheap, and others, means we know our squad and can splash out on a big name, if that is what NP wants. I think Craig Dawson is a more realistic target, but signing Upson and Hamer doesn't stop us spending big bucks, if anything it makes it more feasible as we have fleshed out the squad with quality and experience, without spending anything.
Guest Col city fan Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Think of it this way Col, SSL/Whitbread out Upson in, massive improvement on our fifth choice centre back, now we just need to replace Miquel, with a young fast ball playing centre back, and we have our Centre backs sorted for the coming season. Good way of putting it mate and yes, why not. What I hope to see over the course of the season is Liam Moore really progressing (I think Moore could be an England International one day... he's that good IMO) and if Upson can facilitate this, it'll be fantastic.
65RosesFox Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Last time I checked, Upson had played close to 300 games in the Premier League alone and Albrighton was rumoured to have actually featured for Aston Villa in six Premiership seasons, scoring a couple and assisting on a few in the process. If that's "dross" to you, then I dread to think what "average" means to you. cuddly ken - priceless as always. Totally agree but Ken is on about Upton not Upson. The experience could be vital, but let's get realistic now, same with Wasilewski, can you imagine if they have to play against the likes of Sturridge, Suarez, Giroud, Aguero etc... they will more than likely get terrorised. Matt Upson is too old, don't think he could manage very well in the Premier League anymore, Championship defender at best. Considering the following couldn't cope with Sturridge and Suarez: tottenham - lost 0-5 & 4-0 everton - lost 4-0 arsenal - lost 5-1 man u - lost 0-3 southampton lost 0-3 Any defender we signed for over £10 million would struggle with them pair on their day. That's why they are a world class partnership. As someone else mentioned, as long as our defenders can cope with the teams around us and keep help clean sheets then we don't have a problem. However i like your optimism thinking that no team should "terrorise" us next season whether it be home or away.
DB11 Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 But for Nigel Pearson I'd be confused at this signing. However, in Nige I trust!
Fox Ulike Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Good signing i guess although i am a bit surprised by this one. He played 43 league games for Brighton last year - so is he now prepared to be a bit part player?? Next season may be a transitional one for England captain Sir Bobby " Liam" Moore. Perhaps this signing is just to bridge that gap? I would still like to see an additional first choice CB to be brought in before August...
Bettsj2 Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Last player to score for Ireland at the Euros was Sean St Ledger... Pointless fact Anyway, his age is irrelevant. Anyone trying to justify the signing by saying things like "I just think he's past it", need to check out last season. He was immense. As for Liam Moore, this may be an unpopular opinion but he's not as good as we all make out. He's one of our own. I think it's fair to say we have a natural bias. He's got great potential but he's not ready to start in the Prem yet. I've also seen a lot of people saying that now we need to sign a CM. I don't think so! Central Midfield is our strongest area IMO Good post and good points about Moore. He's got the potential to be excellent but is not there yet. Watching the u21 game last night I was thinking the same thing as you've posted. Upson was superb last season and experience will be invaluable. He wont just help Moore but Wes and Was also. It was inevitble that a lot of fans would lose their shit when we got promoted and immediately started spouting big names on big money. Yet again, level headed fans are calling for faith in the management. I'm very confident we'll surpass the target of survival and solid signings like Upson will help turn that confidence into reality.
Babylon Posted 23 May 2014 Author Posted 23 May 2014 I've also seen a lot of people saying that now we need to sign a CM. I don't think so! Central Midfield is our strongest area IMO Yes the two starters are strong, but I tell you now an injury to one of them two early on and I wouldn't fancy King or Hammond having to play in the centre most of the season. Another quality CM is a must, if not another two and get rid of one of King and Hammond. In the 25 man squad we can have something like 3GK, 2RB, 5CB, 2LB, 2RW, 2LW, 5CM, 5ST... that's 26 but Moore doesn't count to that this year.

I reckon we need someone like Krychowiak to break up the play and win a few headers.
XLM Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 City won the league with Demichelis at the back. Fair enough he was garbage at the start, but in the latter part of the season, where they needed calm heads and experience, he was superb. We're going to need calm heads and experience at crucial points of the season, just like we did last. Good work to get him in.
indierich06 Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 These people moaning, I thought Nigel and Walsh's recruitment policy was second to none? If so, why the negativity? They know what they're doing. People moaned about GTF last year, about Phillips. Both played their part. We never at any point struggles and that's got have been down to experience that saw us through. It's May 23rd, it's not August 31st. We will bring in real quality before then, we are recruiting free transfers as we're able to right now. Chill out. Because in their tiny little minds they're all assuming he'll be starting week in, week out, displacing Liam Moore at 35 years old. Whereas the reality is he's been brought in more for his experience and for cover than anything else.
Corky Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 The experience could be vital, but let's get realistic now, same with Wasilewski, can you imagine if they have to play against the likes of Sturridge, Suarez, Giroud, Aguero etc... they will more than likely get terrorised. Matt Upson is too old, don't think he could manage very well in the Premier League anymore, Championship defender at best. Anyone we sign could suffer that fate, Liam Moore could suffer against those players. I don't see it as a relevant argument, as we play 16 other teams, unless our results against those clubs are the only ones that matter.
steveherbe Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 If Alex Bruce can mangage a season and possibly more in the PL, them Upson will be just fine Good shout. Bruce, McCauley, upson? I know who I'd take. And if qpr go up, add dunne and hill to that list. Upson still wins it for me
JJS84 Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 But for Nigel Pearson I'd be confused at this signing. However, in Nige I trust! someone is on the ball at least! maybe we just trust Nigel (the man that guided us to a league title with a record point total, and mainly signed older experienced players last summer) on this one.
Maybes Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Astute bit of business. Plenty of PL experience. He has been one of Brighton's top performers this season and has made 43 appearances for them so his fitness isn't really in doubt. Good competition to keep the other three on their toes and he can slot in when required. Good work NP and co.
Out Foxed Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 initially, thinking it was going to be longer than a 1 year, i was reticent. i'm slowly turning round. a bit like upson.
65RosesFox Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 What I don't understand is people saying 'i hope he doesn't take Moore's place' Like last season players will play on merit. So if Upson or Wasyl are performing better than Moore, i hope they do take his place. We now have good competition in most positions and the transfer window is officially open. No shirt is guaranteed all players need to earn it. Moore can learn from all three experienced centre backs and will be a better player for it. All four players will have an important part to play in the season. Pearson has strengthened two positions this summer without spending a penny and people still moan. Would they prefer the Sven way of adding players, without strengthening but effecting us financially....

I was hoping he would wait until September and pay over the odds on panic buys that have no time to gel with the squad. Bring back Holloway...
foxes_rule1978 Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Nigel feels he can add something, had a great season for Brighton and does have PL experience. It isn't like he is a quick panic buy, thought has gone into this signing and I fully trust Pearson.
TheUltimateWinner Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 In all honesty, happy with this signing, solid, proven centre back. Just need a Ball Winning Midfielder, Winger, Striker & Left back!
Danno Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Obviously signing a defender over 30 means we must be going straight back down according to some people. Absolute ******. Assuming he'll probably be for cover since we've got rid of St Ledger, Whitbread and Miquel.
leicesterisme Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Struggling to see how anyone can be negative about this signing, plenty of experience and you only have to look at Brightons fans reactions to see he's obviously still a good player. Oh and the usual bollocks about 'He'll get ripped apart by Suarez' Find me someone we can afford/ would come to us who wouldn't
