the_enlightened_one Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Just spotted that not only did he get player of the year for Brighton he also got in the championship team of the year.... not to shabby Thought Morgan and Shackell did?
Salieri Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Solid signing, happy with this. Hopefully Albrighton to follow.
foxaholic Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 for me this is a good purchase from nigel everyone raving that hes an old man look at some of the defenders in the prem now who are quit old and slow mertesacker and demichells and their teams finished in the top 4 of the prem would you be moaning if it was rio ferdinand ? for me people are going on about wes morgan this and wes morgan that but lets be real morgan has never played in the prem and for me when he came up against a bit of pace or strikers with a great footballing brain he struggled to a) catch them up b) find the right position if it was not for de laet or schlupp covering with their pace he would have been in trouble. now replace those championship strikers with suarez, aguero and sturridge and maybe morgan wont be as good as people think upson is slightly quicker has bags of experience and excellent football brain and positioning ? maybe nigel is also concerned about wes in the prem ? We have now on our books players considered Englands worst ever striker and worst ever centre half.
dedlock Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 A capable.experienced, solid CB on a free, one year deal. I don't know what there is to complain about. It's still May ffs! Survival is the name of the game next season, gaining points from the bottom dozen PL clubs. We will need all 25 squad members, no loans between windows.NP & his staff clearly feel Upson's experience will be invaluable. Who are we to disagree?
Mark_from_USA Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Ha ha people are so funny on here: "There's a reason he was playing in the Championship" - Our whole squad was 'playing in the Championship', remember? You could say this about any of them. "Last time out we did this or that, and look what happened".- Last time out we missed a penalty and went down at Watford. Time before that Kermogant missed a chipper.. Time before that we had Ade as our great hope up front. What's the point - the future is the future. "I'm worried about pace". - Did you see all that stuff on sports science at Leicester that came out on BBC? Don't you think the club will have a handle on who needs to be in what shape to play their part? Last season we had lots of late goals, and played right to the end of every match. Somehow I don't think pace will be an issue. "We need a bigger name signing" - Cardiff dropped $50 Million on 'big names'. They got a couple of good standouts and nothing otherwise. What did Sven get for all his 'big name' signings We need the right players, not a 'big name'. At the end of the day, do you trust the people in charge or not? I bet if you noted people whining about transfers now you would find the list of people who will be calling for Pearson's head next year when we hit a rough patch. Just a wild guess on my part.

You are so right, I would have thought people would have learnt that spending doesn't equal success. Upson was one of if not the best player for Brighton, age is irrelevant all that matters is that he can do a job.
Mark_w Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Not impressed with this at all. Too old, turning circle of a Sherman tank. Worrying, our centrebacks are all too slow for the premiership. Somebody mentioned Dads Army, and the last time we were in the premiership we signed a load of old has beans. We are continuing on that theme. I hope to god this is not going to continue. One. ONE. 30+ year old signing this season and we're signing a load of old has-beens. That's a bit of an overreaction even if we ignore the fact that he's just won player of the season for a top six Championship side and is being brought in by a manager who has a pretty damn good record when it comes to signing center backs.
Jam Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Who is to say we won't sign a defender with pace? We have three months until the transfer window closes, Upson was out of contract and available to sign. It is underwhelming to an extent but Pearson has spent five years with us making senisble signings who were written off or derided early on. He hasn't cost anything and as we've seen, the non flashy or exciting signings have turned out to be the some of the best. Bang on fella.
iamafox Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Pearson once again showing his transfer ingenuity. I can see Upson doing well for us, knows what the Premier League is all about and has international experience. Wise move. (No sarcasm)

LAprice_ Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Your forgetting the third point in the criteria, how good are they on FIFA? I can remember years back when we played 3rd division Brighton in the cup, Joachim was going to tear the pedestrian and ageing Steve foster apart, unfortunately foster had experience and now-how and as a result marked Joachim out the game. Two seasons ago when we collapsed it was obvious we needed experience, last summer Nigel added experience to the team. This year we will need experience in the squad, Upson gives us that. He won't play every game, probably won't play many at all but when we're 1-0 up away at somewhere like west ham and they're throwing everything at us, having that experience to come on and sure the defence up could be invaluable just has the use of GTF, Philips and Hammond have done this season. Just for the record, Upson is rated higher than all our CBs on Fifa. But yes, judging a player on Fifa stats is nonsense. According to Fifa, a few years back, Paul Konchesky was quicker than Gareth Bale... We have now on our books players considered Englands worst ever striker and worst ever centre half. Yes and if we were challenging for the title, I would hope for better but that's not the case. We are looking to establish ourselves in the league, we're not going to sign England's greatest players. Vardy, Drinkwater and James have never even played for England, I'd hate to know what you think of them.
suffolk fox Posted 24 May 2014 Posted 24 May 2014 The thing I can't fathom with this signing is that he is no better than the three centrebacks we already have? Upson is woeful end of. Has come for his last big money pay cheque and we give it to him. Makes Big Wes look like Usain Bolt sorry Wes. His mistakes will cost us mark my words. Suarez and Sturridge will have a field day I hope to god he isn't in the starting eleven.

Seems odd for someone who was in the Championship team of the year and voted his clubs player of the season.
Captain... Posted 24 May 2014 Posted 24 May 2014 Wait, so is he slow or does he make lots of mistakes? Or both? Seems odd for someone who was in the Championship team of the year and voted his clubs player of the season. But Suffolk fox clearly knows more than Brighton fans and players and the experts that vote for the championship team of the season and Nigel Pearson and Steve Walsh. He probably saw him on telly once, and he gave away a penalty.
Carl the Llama Posted 24 May 2014 Posted 24 May 2014 There's a lot of talk about lack of pace in here. We don't need Usain Bolt at CB, we need someone who can defend, not fvck off up the other end really quickly. Even if we did need that, signing Upson wouldn't mean we're not getting them in - this is clearly an experience purchase: Getting someone in with Prem experience to be a wise old head and a positive influence behind the scenes, but who is also solidly reliable enough in their role to do a job when called upon as a backup, Ã la KP or GTF this season just gone.
roblcfc84 Posted 24 May 2014 Posted 24 May 2014 Terry has no pace but was a top performer last year. If you have good positional sense pace is less of an issue. Maldini played at the top level (albeit in a slightly slower paced league) for years because of his intelligence. Upson is also a strong intelligent character, could be a good influence on the dressing room
TonyN11 Posted 24 May 2014 Posted 24 May 2014 Why don't we sign the player who scored England's last World Cup goal? Oh we have!
Brooksy Posted 24 May 2014 Posted 24 May 2014 Why don't we sign the player who scored England's last World Cup goal? Oh we have! Is Lampard signing then?
Stadt Posted 24 May 2014 Posted 24 May 2014 What Centre backs actually have pace? Kompany and Demechelis are slow. Skrtel and Agger are slow Terry and Cahill are painfully slow Mertesacker is agonisingly slow Distin and Jagielka are slow What CBs are quick then, Thiago Silva? That Korean on FIFA?
