cc_star Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 We can sign whoever we want to sign their is nothing stopping us bidding for Rhodes for example. It may be case of waiting game because other clubs are similar situation biding their time we have a WC to contend with and I guess that will delay things as well. From the outside we must look like one of the favourites to go down It's unlikely we'll be able to attract any one highly sought-after individual, but we may be able to attract two Using each other's names to attract each of them Anyway, Pearson won't rip the soul out of the squad with a player on double or triple the wage of the team who got us here And who knows, the owners have invested so much they may want to take the profits of Premier League football back out to recoup half their investment, yes they've said they'll continue to invest, yes we have less than zero reason to doubt them ... but who really knows, money talks - especially when it's your own. Regardless there's a balance in the squad that Pearson will maintain, that is almost certain!
LAprice_ Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 We will probably play with three CMs next year. Are one of King and Hammond good enough to be starting? I reckon we need someone like Krychowiak to break up the play and win a few headers. It's a bit off topic but yes, that's a fair point. However, I do think that the gulf in class between Prem and Championship is a myth. There are 7 exceptional teams but then the rest are only slightly better than Championship level. Hammond, King and even Upson for that matter, should fit into the starting 11 when required. We all list players like Bruce, Delaney and even Harry Kane; they all looked average in the Championship but yet they are getting plenty of game time in the Premier League.
Greatness_Since_1884 Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Someone like Scott Parker? Potentially although age profile wise I think someone at their real peak around 27/28 would be better (provided they are good enough obvs) The links to guys like Inan also fit this too
suffolk fox Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Not impressed with this at all. Too old, turning circle of a Sherman tank. Worrying, our centrebacks are all too slow for the premiership. Somebody mentioned Dads Army, and the last time we were in the premiership we signed a load of old has beans. We are continuing on that theme. I hope to god this is not going to continue.

I take it you missed out on the news on Ben Hamer. Good morning!
Walshy5 Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Despite my best efforts im really cant see any positives in this.
Vlad the Fox Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Haven't people learnt anything from all the moaning last pre-season?

kingfox Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Who is to say we won't sign a defender with pace? We have three months until the transfer window closes, Upson was out of contract and available to sign. It is underwhelming to an extent but Pearson has spent five years with us making senisble signings who were written off or derided early on. He hasn't cost anything and as we've seen, the non flashy or exciting signings have turned out to be the some of the best. I didn't expect us to possibly sign two centre backs, that's why. We will see, but experience has paid off in the Championship, Premier League is a different story, everyone will come in handy at some point, but pace wise I'm just a bit worried.

Read what me and others in this thread have said. Look at Palace's centre back pairing. This too-old bullshit is really fvcking me off already and it's only May.

LAprice_ Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Is pace really that important? I'd rather have a defender that can position himself correctly, use his strength and his brain. Sorry but this whole pace thing is getting annoying now. We seem to judge most new signings and current fringe players on two criteria: How quick are they and how old are they. Would having a defender with a bit more pace actually make any difference against players like Van Persie, Suarez and Aguero? Some of the best defenders in the league lack pace: Terry, Mertesacker, Demichelis, even Kompany isn't the quickest. As for age, just check out the great seasons that Distin (36) and Gabbidon (34) have had.
65RosesFox Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 His signing of Hamer was good, but this guy will be off the pace in the Premier, due to his age. He is going to have to be quicker than in the Championship. I hope he cuts it, but I doubt he will see much football next season. Worries me, even as a back up, but what do I know? I'm strugglng to think of any centre backs from the bottom half of the Premier League that survived relegation with this so called essential neccesity of having pace. Also Vidic and Ferdinand faired well for a few years and neither of them were known for their 'pace' Positioning is a lot more important than pace. And if you disagree then perhaps we should consider putting Dyer there.....
dorsetboy Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 for me this is a good purchase from nigel everyone raving that hes an old man look at some of the defenders in the prem now who are quit old and slow mertesacker and demichells and their teams finished in the top 4 of the prem would you be moaning if it was rio ferdinand ? for me people are going on about wes morgan this and wes morgan that but lets be real morgan has never played in the prem and for me when he came up against a bit of pace or strikers with a great footballing brain he struggled to a) catch them up b) find the right position if it was not for de laet or schlupp covering with their pace he would have been in trouble. now replace those championship strikers with suarez, aguero and sturridge and maybe morgan wont be as good as people think upson is slightly quicker has bags of experience and excellent football brain and positioning ? maybe nigel is also concerned about wes in the prem ?
BoyJones Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 I see the euphoria of winning the league has worn off already for the regular moaners!! It would be nice if people gave Nigel and his new signings a chance before sticking the boot in. Obviously the moaners are all superb and faultless in their jobs and therefore have the right to slag off Nigel and his decisions.
Kinowe Soorie Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 We once signed a player called Nicky Mohan who was supposed to be really quick. He was... but he was a shit footballer!!!
Stadt Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Arsenal's back 4, supposedly Champions League quality, got ravaged by Man City's attack conceding, what 5 goals? Claiming that he'll get torn apart by Agüero, Sturridge and Suarez is ridiculous - even the best CBs in the league get torn apart by the best strikers in the league. The issue is if he's getting torn apart by the more average strikers in the league and that's even if he plays. We'll probably sign another centre half anyway.
FoxyPalace.com Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Took alot of stick at work about this signing, After the 180 million! then we sign a 35 year old on a free!
