Leicesterpool Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 An interesting signing with bags of experience in the top flight.
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 We've got three months until the season starts so we're picking up reasonable freebies to pad out the squad while we can, he's an experienced head who's clearly still got games in him and has just been an integral part of the Championship's meanest defence, and we've a manager who no doubt knows a decent centre half when he sees one. His Premier League nous could be invaluable in the long run, tidy. People need to remember it's still only May and we're not going to be assaulting the top flight with the only business done being a back-up 'keeper and centre half squad player come August. I doubt he's on much more (if anything) than SSL and I know which I'd prefer...
DANGEROUS TIGER Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Why so much negativity? I think this is a very clever signing. He brings much needed PL experience and was one of the best defenders in the Championship last season. His signing of Hamer was good, but this guy will be off the pace in the Premier, due to his age. He is going to have to be quicker than in the Championship. I hope he cuts it, but I doubt he will see much football next season. Worries me, even as a back up, but what do I know?
Silverdaz Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Yes the two starters are strong, but I tell you now an injury to one of them two early on and I wouldn't fancy King or Hammond having to play in the centre most of the season. Another quality CM is a must, if not another two and get rid of one of King and Hammond. In the 25 man squad we can have something like 3GK, 2RB, 5CB, 2LB, 2RW, 2LW, 5CM, 5ST... that's 26 but Moore doesn't count to that this year. Hammond and King are more than useful back ups
ToeKneeHandCock Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 We've three centre backs all with no premiership experience and we don't know how well they'll adapt. Upson gives us a dependable if unspectacular bit of strength to see us through any tough times, giving us time to make a proper experience-based assessment of where our defence is at and what long term investments need to be made. An intelligent bit of strategic squad building from nige and the boys. Hope the media are taking note after their hatchet job on us the other week. Spot on imo
Greatness_Since_1884 Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 I still feel Morgan and Moore will be first choice come first game of the season and I genuinely think I'd take that Signing a 5th CB would hint strongly at 3 at the back or Liam Moore being used more at RB, neither of which I like
Leicesterpool Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Maybe Nigel is looking to start playing five at the back next season?
LCFC31 Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Maybe Nigel is looking to start playing five at the back next season? We will play 4-2-3-1. The whole point of playing that towards the end of this season was to get the players used to it.
LeicesterBran Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 He isn't a terrible signing like people are making out he is altough we could have done better than him. I do think Upson, can be a useful option in the Premier League for us.
Babylon Posted 23 May 2014 Author Posted 23 May 2014 Hammond and King are more than useful back ups Well we will have to disagree, because I wouldn't want either of them having to play in the prem.
Corky Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 But the pace will be much different, we saw recently with Joseph Yobo for example, experienced Premier League defender struggle when he signed for Norwich. Upson has bags of experience, and yes it will be vital, and like Wasilewski he may come in handy, but when we were talking about targets when the season finished, majority said we need a centre back with pace, but signing Upson is completely the opposite. We will see, but like quite a few have said underwhelming signing. Who is to say we won't sign a defender with pace? We have three months until the transfer window closes, Upson was out of contract and available to sign. It is underwhelming to an extent but Pearson has spent five years with us making senisble signings who were written off or derided early on. He hasn't cost anything and as we've seen, the non flashy or exciting signings have turned out to be the some of the best.
Leicesterpool Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Hammond and King are more than useful back ups King in the premier league could be interesting but Hammond... I just wasn't convinced with him, looked a little bit too slow.
Haydos Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 The experience could be vital, but let's get realistic now, same with Wasilewski, can you imagine if they have to play against the likes of Sturridge, Suarez, Giroud, Aguero etc... they will more than likely get terrorised. Matt Upson is too old, don't think he could manage very well in the Premier League anymore, Championship defender at best. I can't recall who has been playing at the back for who but Hull, Villa, Sunderland, West Ham, Swansea, Palace etc have all stayed up this year. Have they all got defenders who you'd think would deal with those players absolutely fine? 35 is not 'too old'. Plenty of players in the Prem are that old. Someone has already posted somewhere a couple of cb's who are 36/37 belonging to teams that stayed up this year. Perpetuating a pointless myth.
Greatness_Since_1884 Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Hammond put in some top performances towards the back end of the season playing the deepest of 3 Having said that the biggest signing I expect us to make is a strong CM to play that role with Hammond backing them up, allowing Drinkwater, King, James (and even Knocky/Mahrez who could play more centrally) to express themselves more in a 3
m00nie Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Hammond put in some top performances towards the back end of the season playing the deepest of 3 elvis??
Zapp Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Not sure about 'unbeatable in the air', I'd go with OK in the air. He's only 6'1'' and not a particularly good jumper. What he does give us is quality distribution from the back, of all Championship centre backs only Richard Keogh of Derby had a higher pass completion percentage last season. I think this addresses a slightly weak area for us, Liam Moore in particular is not a very good passer. i'd buy it
Happy Fox Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Certainly need to buy better quality in the centre of the park: the players we have been linked with so far are on the right level; Selcuk Inan and that Polish geezer are certainly good enough to displace Drinkwater and James competition wise. For me we need 5 more signings I would categorise them as squad players and first team players. First team players which are going to command money: Upfront, Central Midfield and Left Back Squad players: Left winger and Right Back. Job Done as far as our team/ squad is concerned.
Haydos Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Many on here, I guess, will make an argument for signing Matt Upson. Experience, leadership, coaching etc.. and this will all be valid . However... I must confess my first reaction was Upson!? What? I don't suppose it will do us any harm and may do some good. And it's on a free. And I think it will herald the signing of some other, more exciting players. This is similar to my main feeling on this. We can only sign frees at the moment He's free He's experienced in the Prem He was Brighton's player of the season I trust Pearson He will more than likely be back up If Pearson has signed him then he'll probably be a good head to have in the dressing room He won't be on high wages We need to fill 25 over-21 squad places He's free It's still May He's free
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Danny Gabbidon and Damien Delaney are Palace's regular centre half pairing, to put things into perspective.
Happy Fox Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 We can sign whoever we want to sign their is nothing stopping us bidding for Rhodes for example. It may be case of waiting game because other clubs are similar situation biding their time we have a WC to contend with and I guess that will delay things as well.
Haydos Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 dont really get it myself beast defense in the CHAMPIONSHIP. but were premier league now bag of experience, but if hes a squad, bit part player are we really going to benefit from it, i imagine survival is the target this season but what happens next year if we do survive, he will be another year older and we will be back to square one. guessing NP has his reasons and he proved me wrong last season so il stick with him. This is an absurdly thought out piece of rubbish. 1) Who does the first bit remind you of? Phillips perhaps? Did we benfit from that? 2) What happens next year? He'll probably be released and we will continue to build. 3) How will we back to square one? Square one is us being promoted, not surviviving one year and learning from it, with the chance to build a reputation like Southampton and Swansea have done.

Haydos Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Danny Gabbidon and Damien Delaney are Palace's regular centre half pairing, to put things into perspective. They were the pair I was after. Bang on, but don't worry, DT, cuddly dickhead, tuna, all the usuals are obviously going to write everything off and not look further than "uurrrrrr he's old so he's shit urrrrr no pace urrrr Suarez urrr"
