Not sure. It is more like a friendly than anything else though, not sure if the players and managers will be up for it that much. Perhaps just give the losers of both semi-finals the honour of joint #3 place?

Posted

Hopefully teams will treat it as a risk free game and go all out attack. Would at least be interesting spectacle.

Don't think it's really needed but they'd have to be a good reason to get rid of it.

is there any other Cup where the losing semi-finalists play for 3rd?

Imagine the FA Cup 3rd place play off??

FARCE.

SCRAP!

Scrap. Who cares who finishes third? Teams who have just lost in the World Cup semi final don't want to play a meaningless game for third place - I imagine most just want to be on the plane home. It's essentially a glamorous friendly.

Doesnt the previous winner (current holder) get automatic qualification anymore?

Oh and get rid of the 3rd place playoff, just a money spinner and an embarrassment for all concerned.

I assume not as Spain had to go through the qualification process.

Total non-event. Either enhance it in some way (like automatic qualification for the next WC though I think you'd need to give second place that as well) or get rid of it.

I'll watch it but it's effectively a friendly.

It must be humilating being the third and fourth best team at something major.

It's like Forest v County at the City Ground to see who is third best in the East Midlands.

Decent.

Sunday world cup final.

Saturday. Cloughie cup

I like it as like the warm up act to the final. Because the teams don't care as much they go for goals.

(Not been a 3rd placed playoff with less than 3 goals since 1974)

Been played since the 1934 World Cup. I'm not a big fan of keeping things because they've always been that way, but it is tradition. It's a nice warm up to the final, usually plenty of goals, and a chance for players who haven't had many minutes (or any at all) to get a run out.

harmless enough- if England were in it (ha ha) we would be up for it.

I think these tournaments cost the host nation a fortune - you cant begrudge them a bit of payback

Who honestly remembers who comes third?

Scrap it.

From 1990 onwards in order, Italy, Sweden, Croatia, Turkey, Germany, Germany, Netherlands.

No, keep it.

It seems these days football fans want to 'scrap' anything that is not vitally important like League Cup, cup replays, Charity Shield, International Friendlies. It's all football, if they can't be arsed to do their job then it's their problem.

Scraping the 3rd place play off match could deny players the chance to win the golden boot. Wouldn't you be pissed if you only needed 1 goal to win the golden boot? Thats the only negative I can see from losing it, as well as obvious financial loss from not filling up a stadium for one extra match.

but your team has lost in the semis...you shouldnt be playing another game.

You are out

your team has lost.

time to go home...its over...bye bye...

I'd be more pissed off that we went out in the Semis personally.

I'll hope that will not be a question in next foxestalk trivia edition!

I know what you're saying, but if your team is out should you deserve another chance? In a game which, aside from this year, normally brings about a lot of goals and therefore you're more likely to go on and finish as top scorer than someone in the final?
