Maybes Posted 6 August 2014 Posted 6 August 2014 So I'm in the market for a new TV. I've been looking at a Sony Bravia KDL40 R483BBU http://www.richersounds.com/product/tv---all/sony/bravia-kdl40r483bbu/sony-kdl40r483bbu Priced at £360. So I go into the shop and the sales guy says that I will get 'motion blur' watching action movies etc as that TV is marked up at 100hz MCR however it is only 50hz in the old money. He advised I should get one with a higher refresh rate...typical sales patter I thought. I said I would re-consider and left the shop. Does it really make that much difference? Does anyone have the TV I'm looking at? Any help is appreciated. The TV wont be used for gaming.

Maybes Posted 6 August 2014 Author Posted 6 August 2014 Which shop? if the guy at Richer Sounds said that, then they usually know what they are talking about. London Road, Leicester.
kingcarr21 Posted 6 August 2014 Posted 6 August 2014 Which shop? if the guy at Richer Sounds said that, then they usually know what they are talking about. Have to 2nd this. Richer sounds have always been helpful when ive wanted a new TV
kingcarr21 Posted 6 August 2014 Posted 6 August 2014 Get the Curved TV in John Lewis £7000 Or a 128" TV i saw in Harrods a few years ago at £125,000
Julian Joachim Jr Shabadoo Posted 6 August 2014 Posted 6 August 2014 Could also be a man trying to sell you a more expensive TV to get extra commission... I use a cheap Sharp 40in LCD and have never noticed blur or ghosting for Xbox 360 or films. I'd definitely be surprised if a new Sony had any sort of noticeable motion blur.
sphericalfox Posted 6 August 2014 Posted 6 August 2014 Pricerunner used to be able to choose more specific TV options, the hertz, number of hdmi etc. if that's any help choosing.
HEGGSY Posted 6 August 2014 Posted 6 August 2014 http://www.coopelectricalshop.co.uk/Digihome-39180SMFHDLED-Black-39Inch-Smart-Full-HD-LED-TV-with-Freeview/id-DIG-LED-39180SMFHDLED-BK I got this from co-op in the haymarket 39in 1080p Smart TV for £230. Only problem is, it's supermarket brand, but it's not done me too bad
Maybes Posted 6 August 2014 Author Posted 6 August 2014 Did you notice any motion blur on your old TV? No but it's an LCD. The one I'm looking at is LED.
JimmyK Posted 6 August 2014 Posted 6 August 2014 'MCR' and all that stuff is so misleading it's unreal, they pretty much just multiply the actual refresh rate by a random number, particularly with the higher end models. Richer Sounds are generally very good but beware of them trying to convince you to buy expensive HDMI cables if you need one. I can't speak for Sony as mine is a Samsung, but really it depends on what looks good to you, can you get it demonstrated in store? Higher refresh rates can (with a bit of playing around to avoid the soap opera effect) reduce blur quite effectively but plenty of 50hz TVs can still look very nice and not blurry.

This. A 99p HDMI cable is as good as £99 one. Like any digital cable, it either transmits all the information or it doesn't. If a salesman tries to tell you a more expensive HDMI cable gives a better picture quality, he is either calling you a chump or he himself is chump and you should treat the situation accordingly (leave the shop or thump him)
dave_the_fox Posted 6 August 2014 Posted 6 August 2014 I've got the ue46f5000 it's an absolute treat for footy ps4 etc. it's a bargain because it has no 3d or smart functions, but I've got TiVo so don't need none of that shizlzle! I think it's classed as 100hz too and I have seen no blur (or don't notice it anyway) during any World Cup games or when I'm on playstation
Steven Posted 6 August 2014 Posted 6 August 2014 Richer Sounds give five out of five. http://www.richersounds.com/product/tv---all/sony/bravia-kdl40r483bbu/sony-kdl40r483bbu
Raj Posted 6 August 2014 Posted 6 August 2014 check out john lewis first. we got a 40"panasinic smart for well under £400 with 5 year warranty in May
Webbo Posted 6 August 2014 Posted 6 August 2014 check out john lewis first. we got a 40"panasinic smart for well under £400 with 5 year warranty in May I thought that was one of those brands they sell at Lidl, along with Hoinz beans and Cudbury's Chocolate.
FoxesAreBlue Posted 6 August 2014 Posted 6 August 2014 I thought that was one of those brands they ell at Lidl, along with Hoinz beans and Cudbury's Chocolate. I shop at Aldi, not Lidl - I'm not an animal.
Raj Posted 6 August 2014 Posted 6 August 2014 I thought that was one of those brands they sell at Lidl, along with Hoinz beans and Cudbury's Chocolate. ...panasonic!!!

Yeah it's very annoying. I have no idea what Motion Blur looks like as I've never owned an LED TV. Like you say a demo in store is probably the way to go.
Raj Posted 6 August 2014 Posted 6 August 2014 alot of crap about all this 100hz motion blur thisthatandanother. The average bloke who just wants a good reliable tv wont notice the difference...unless you do get the curved one for 7k!!!
potter3 Posted 6 August 2014 Posted 6 August 2014 An "LED" TV is still an LCD screen, it's just that the way it's lit up is different.
Strokes Posted 6 August 2014 Posted 6 August 2014 An "LED" TV is still an LCD screen, it's just that the way it's lit up is different. That's right, as for motion blur, its nonsense.
Carl the Llama Posted 6 August 2014 Posted 6 August 2014 Did you turn up looking like a twat? It certainly sounds like he was treating you like one. Buy the TV and bang his girlfriend.
danny. Posted 8 August 2014 Posted 8 August 2014 If it's for gaming Sony W8/9 best. PIcture quality is all the same on all the brands pretty much at each price bracket. Apps are best on Samsung (awful on Sony, decent on LG/Panny). I've got 2 Sonys (W7 and W8) and a Samsung, the picture/colour is def. better on the Sonys, no blurring, but then again they are "300mhz" which I think means feck all.
danny. Posted 8 August 2014 Posted 8 August 2014 That's right, as for motion blur, its nonsense. LEDs are all crappy for blurring compared to Plasmas (which were vastly superior, but never that popular), the motion technology is just down to software which analyses the signal and adds extra frames in to compensate, it does make a big different in what I've seen, but a crap 600mhz could be worse than a great 100mhz, the figures themselves are meaningless
