The Red Shirt Debacle...

Recommended Posts

This isn't a moan about the red shirt in itself, as such. It's more to do with the service provided (or lack of) from the club and a question for those who ordered it online on the day of the release (Thursday 21st).

I ordered my shirt at 9.40am and the process went through fine. The site worked with no problems and the order was put through in a matter of a few minutes.

I then got an e-mail at about 4.20pm on the same day (21st) saying 'due to high demand on the internet' they sold out of the shirts and therefore I won't be able to get one.

Did anyone on here order after that time (9.40am) and receive a shirt? Did anyone get the same e-mail?

I checked my account today and noticed that they've taken the cost of the shirt (+ personalisation) out of my account despite not being able to provide the shirt.

I ordered mine at 9:04am but did hear a rumour that online sales were not monitored properly in comparison to in store sales. Therefore they didn't know how many shirts were left for sale. JC Sports still have some in stock though

lol Why on earth have they made it such limited edition? Surely they could've had a guess that it would be extremely popular.

There's no way they won't re-release it later, probably around Christmas time. Although I still have no idea why you would make a shirt limited edition.

I always assumed they were hedging their bets that the shirt might not be popular because it was red, and weren't sure how big the OMG ITS RED THAT'S FOREST'S COLOUR brigade would be. So to save face they limit the quantity so that if it only just sells out they'll get away with it. That said they could've just easily said an initial batch of 1000 will go on sale.

Now it's proved extremely popular and they've had to turn away a flurry of sales and frustrate people because of their hedging. Why they didn't have a standby order ready to go if such demand hit I'll never know. Baffling decision to make it limited and is only to the detriment of the legion of fans waiting for one and the club for losing out on revenue.

Shows the difference between football and normal industry though, a clothing retailer would be going agog and couldn't order another batch fast enough with the level of demand shown. We'll just twiddle our thumbs and wait till Christmas.

I get some of their reasons for Limited Edition, but why tell me that it's sold out yet they can still process the order (and more to the point, they've followed through on other orders that were placed after).

Why have I missed out and people who ordered after me have been promised a shirt (or delivery of it)?

Understand your frustration but are you really that surprised in the poor performance of the store?

Not really!

Still come to expect better and hopefully my complaint to them will make them change things.

I just dont understand how they can get so many things, so wrong, so often. The worst thing is that its been going on for years and nothing ever seems to be addressed.

Possible a key to this Stan - what size and shirt type did you order?

My order was placed for me, probably after yours come to think of it, but it was for a medium long sleeved shirt? My understanding is the medium in short sleeved was showing as 'sold out' at that point.

If you're really desperate for one of these they still have women's on sale and I'm sure most of you have bigger tits than half the women in the city so it might be a blessing in disguise.

Ordered large short-sleeved. As the order went through, it didn't come up as sold out. In fact, at the time of ordering, all the sizes were available online.

Observations from across the pond:

Spot on about the lack of retail acumen.

One of the bigger issues: the web sites (the team and store) are both train wrecks. Shockingly so. And the shit of it is, it's not that difficult to make an attractive and easy to use web site.  Our local MLS side (Philadelphia Union) use a team of interns (IT students from university) with a full time supervisor to run the IT department.  They do a bang up job on the cheap.

As for inventory control, in the Union team store EVERY ITEM is bar coded and kept in a database, so that when it's sold (either online or in person at the store) it gets pulled from the inventory database. This eliminates duplicate sale of the same item and also allows tracking of when sales are frequent or not, as well as to set low inventory alarms.  It would be worth it for LCFC to keep a little extra inventory even if it means selling it at year-end sales at or just above cost. But at least keep a digital inventory so you can track it.

And finally, the team store should be seen and treated as a very important revenue stream. It is apparent they are losing lots of money through inefficiency, money that could be well spent on the squad.  FWIW, the majority of Beckham's 60-month testimonial tour over here was funded in large part by replica kit sale (Buy Herbalife and piss orange..)

In short, they could do with a thorough audit by IT efficiency consultants....

Stan, contact the club, tell them they have broken the contract between you and them, and as they have taken your money and not provided the goods, you will charge them 10% per day until the shirt arrives. Go on, you know you want to.

worth a try then considering we all know there isn't half a brain cell between everyone involved in the retail side of our club

Or turn up at the shop on a match day, go to a till and ask for your money back. Ask for the manager, refuse to leave until you get your cash. Make a fuss, dont just moan on here. Power to the people and all that.
