Rob1742 Posted 2 October 2014 Posted 2 October 2014 Just on the A14 today. Not normal for the speed camera vans to be out on that road, but today they were. This van though was dark navy, so apart from the hole in the back window, hard to recognise it being a copper wagon. Usually white as I recall. They didn't get me, as I am a good boy, but the almost black van is a new tactic that appears will catch quite a few off guard.

Strokes Posted 2 October 2014 Posted 2 October 2014 I thought they weren't allowed to do speed checks in unmarked vehicles, I doubt this is what they would have been checking.
Matt Posted 2 October 2014 Posted 2 October 2014 Checks for road tax, now the system has changed maybe?
DANGEROUS TIGER Posted 2 October 2014 Posted 2 October 2014 Probably ANPR checks. We often did them from unmarked vehicles. Brings up all the information, from issues such as road tax, to crime etc. Suited me well, as it's an interesting gadget to use. In the Thames Valley force we used unmarked vehicles for speed checks. Why advertise yourself? If people are stupid enough to speed, then they deserve all they get.
Out Foxed Posted 2 October 2014 Posted 2 October 2014 saw a load of police, patrol cars and speed cameras,on the 29th/30th. did they have some quotas to fill before the end of the month or something?

'Speeding' is the mere application of common sense on some roads, unfortunately those roads also tend to be the most frequented with mobile cameras because they know they can always catch some of the less wary drivers out for a nice little bounty.
ADK Posted 3 October 2014 Posted 3 October 2014 Before I drove much I was all for speed limits and thought they needed to be enforced more but once you start driving they become a bit of a nuisance. Unreasonably slow limits seem to cause as much trouble as they save.
Rob1742 Posted 3 October 2014 Author Posted 3 October 2014 I thought they weren't allowed to do speed checks in unmarked vehicles, I doubt this is what they would have been checking. It was marked, but as it was navy, you didn't pick up on it until you were on top of it. My thoughts afterwards is that you subconsciously look out for white vans, and don't really look at other colours. So I think it was out for speeders, it was marked so legal to do, but you don't pick it up as you are not accustomed to it. It was between Huntingdon and Kettering West bound
JIMMYWILLIS Posted 3 October 2014 Posted 3 October 2014 When I did a speed awareness course I told them the van which caught me was unmarked. The guy insisted they never do that but I've seen it many times since. Fair cop, just saying

In a word, CRAP! Have you ever had to attend a fatal accidents caused by speeding? No. I have, and it is gut wrenching.
Unabomber Posted 3 October 2014 Posted 3 October 2014 In a word, CRAP! Have you ever had to attend a fatal accidents caused by speeding? No. I have, and it is gut wrenching. So is racism and homophobia imo.
sphericalfox Posted 3 October 2014 Posted 3 October 2014 In a word, CRAP! Have you ever had to attend a fatal accidents caused by speeding? No. I have, and it is gut wrenching. I nearly spilled a full ashtray on my mates carpet after a night stomping to Andy C, I didn't eat for days, and had a reet pain in my gulliver, I hear what your saying.
fuchsntf Posted 3 October 2014 Posted 3 October 2014 My gripe was never the speed cops, but the tw#ts who drive well over the limit. Plus road engineers, who cant plan their repairs in armony taking town , city flows and county flows into account. Usuall very poor in maths, getting 2 major issues terribly wrong. Road building area width of road, often mis-calculated, nearly every parking lot width, forgetting, its not just for parking, but people would actually like to get out of their cars, after parking, with being allowed to open their doors fully on both sides, health and safety should be suing the town councils. AA should be arguing this case, plus love to see some clever bu##ers take out a writ against these councils, after breaking a hand, ankle, leg, because they didnt have enough room to manouvre out of their own or friends car. Speeding, ( yes I have been done, my fault fair cop) no excuse , bounties or unfair traps..BullSh#t !!! If speedsters dont like losing money, dont speed, dont overtake where inapropiate.Your the idiot, not the law.

The whole point of doing the checks is so that members of the public realise that the police are there enforcing the law. This article says as much. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2730983/Caught-camera-Police-officers-filmed-trying-catch-speeders-unmarked-car-despite-rules-saying-cameras-clearly-visible.html

Only driving safely when traps are known, speeding is not being sneaky....mmm
Rob1742 Posted 4 October 2014 Author Posted 4 October 2014 I think "sneaky" wouldn't form part of the title of in certain cases they weren't. Don't have a problem with enforcing speeding as such, but sometimes it is clear that the aim is more about revenue than law enforcement. The reason I say this is that on a few occasions that I have been caught, it has been downhill, just after a lower speed sign and so they have known this is the optimum chance of getting their desired result. So no problem with speed cameras, infact I found it odd that a few years ago many were disarmed. But do it for the right reasons and you will get the full support from the public.
Saxondale Posted 4 October 2014 Posted 4 October 2014 The simple fact is they never put these vans in accident blackspots, only in places where they're more likely to catch people because, for instance, a disproportionately low speed limit. Also, making the vans stealth sort of makes a mockery of them being a deterrent to speeding. And the police wonder why everybody hates them?
Rincewind Posted 4 October 2014 Posted 4 October 2014 Yes they should install huge signs as you approach with ' just to let you know we have a van a couple of miles ahead to catch you speeding. You cant miss it it has 'Sneaky Coppers' painted on the side. When passed there would be another sign 'OK you can increase your speed now'
Vlad the Fox Posted 4 October 2014 Posted 4 October 2014 I thought they do have to sign post it by law, or they used to. And what's the point in being undercover to catch speeders if one of them then runs a kid over, 'at least we caught him speeding.' The idea is that they slow traffic down to prevent accidents, not to fill their coffers, and it works, even in areas that are signposted yet they don't have fixed cameras.

When passed there would be another sign 'OK you can increase your speed now' The idea of 'safety' cameras is the safety of everyone, not revenue raising and incrimination. They catch plenty of idiots with marked vehicles, so to attempt to catch out more is sneaky.

If, however, their aim is to allow people to carry on speeding but then fine them, then they should carry on being sneaky.

They do have signs with a camera on though. I don't drive so it does not matter to me if they are sneaky. There are some drivers that are just over may be missed so I think their main aim is to catch those that are way over and may be driving erratically.. Do they have speed traps in the early hours on country roads?
MooseBreath Posted 4 October 2014 Posted 4 October 2014 Some residents who live close to a dual carriageway near me successfully got the speed limit reduced to 50mph last year based on reducing the level of noise. Of course the first thing the police did was bang in a speed camera. Thousands got caught and fined that first weekend. There were also three accidents due to people slamming on the breaks, more accidents on that stretch of road in one weekend than there had been in the 17 years since it was built. It was only through luck that nobody was killed. Protect and serve, mother ****ers.
